I have been really thinking about this for a while now, and darn it, I'm about to go ahead and do it.
Going through all the FSM stuff recently I realized a very valuable tool I have is my access to information, my laptop (that's almost always with me), and service centers that have computers and online access of their own.
I recently made use of this stuff while working out an issue wth my brake system, and it would have been a pain had there not been the NCTTORA online stuff to access (Thanks MARK and TEAM! (http://vwt.d2g.com:8081/Guiness-Brilliant.jpg)). Even worse, what if, in this case my own books were on loan, had they not had access to the online stuff?
Well, simple solution you should go ahead ond do on your own.
Download all the diagrams and manuals to your computer and burn them to disc (like we do with suspension and other stuff for bikes) and throw it/them in a temperature proof container or jacket and in your rig!!
*Now I don't expect you to go wheeling with a $4000 laptop, but the disc alone may save you some headaches when away and afar, right? :D

Well, Do you always take your laptop wheeling? I know I dont...:bling:
or get an iphone and email it to yourself on gmail... you will have it any time you need it!
Or ya know you could print it all out with someones laser printer somewhere.

except for the fact that its like 1200 pages. lol
I dont think this topic really bares being a sticky, asI believe most people have access to these FSM links already, and they are posted in a TON of tech threads.
Although I think this is a good idea Shane.
I've had the FSM's for my 84 and for my 04 burned to disc since I bought the vehicles. :)
I also have them all downloaded and saved on a laptop I keep out in the shop. :)

1200 pages? I have the FSM real deal for my T100 and its no bigger than a thick notebook-maybe an inch or so thick...

1200 may be an exageration. lol. I know the first gen FSM is about 800 pages or so.

oh ok shane, I thought I read your post well but didnt really see what you meant, and yes a bit confusing...but, you could go alittle further and put it on an iso drive or whatever alcohol would do, so you dont even have to use your disc, then, when ya dont hve your laptop the disc will really come in handy. oh and...:flipoff: :bling:

i carry my haynes manual with me at all times, and i have A service manual on my laptop and desktop. unfortunately its not specific to my 98, its a 2002, actually quite different on some things.

haynes will get me out of a jam. usually i can figure this stuff out by looking at it. so for trail side repairs its not horrible. at least its better than nothing at all.

Agreed. for a "get me home" fix, usually eyeballing it, and a basic understanding of the workings of your truck will do, but if not, a haynes manual can usually get you out of ajam, although I do trust my FSM's far more than my haynes, so haynes and basic knowledge to get you back to the house (or if you are lucky, the trailer) and then FSM and UltimateYota to get you fixed right. :)

I keep all of my fsm's with the repair bin inside the truck. That way if something breaks the fsm comes out along w/ the parts needed to get me back on the road.
I have considered a digital copy of em but in all honesty it only helps if you're just researching and don't want to pull a book out. I can't imagine opening your laptop w/ your greasy hands trying to scroll up/down thru each page/section.
On a side note, everyone should own a copy of the fsm for their applicable vehicle(s).

ebay has them sometimes, but why not just download it and print it out, real FSMs can be pricey

try a google search for "4runner fsm" that will show you where to get one for free. i got two last night. the 3rd gen ones all default to being labled 2002 in the files. i havnt seen if the pages break it down into years but the only differences are cosmetic anyhow. the fsm will come with me cause my gps is my laptop :)

i have a 2002 version in plain pdf files also an ISO version. i like the ISO version because all the pages are linked when loaded it up to a virtual CD rom. sadly, no more M/T after 2000, so i have that part in blank.

**If you're a "Paper-n-Book" kind of person, keep in mind, we had the earliest book just printed up for a friend who has an 89, it would have cost a customer easily $200 to have the over 1000 pages printed up front/back style, hole punched, and bound or foldered. The factory books that are still available are the cheaper alternative when and if available. Some dealerships can still back or special order them for you. We just bought my 95 books, and a set of 1991 books, brand new, with our club discount, for less than $200 total. Let's hear it for TLCA. :D
If anyone has a deal going with any print shops, perhaps the next thing to consider offering to clubs/members would be rare reprints??
