Well, I figured it was time that I treat myself to a better stereo than the wonderful stock deck that comes with the truck. I've heard nothing but praise about this deck, and since I got it from crutchfield, I got a free back up camera with it. Should get it sometime next week, and following will be a nice writeup about the install.

niceeeeeee. I have an alpine cva 1000 and I love it. And since this is much newer with cooler features, I am sure you will love it too!

wawa wewa! Wow, that is nice, I wonder if that would fit in the stock location in my 4runner? Great, now one more thing to add to my list of wants/needs! Looking forward to the install pics.

Looks veeery nice. But as far as I can see, it's not an HDD unit so you can't play CD's at the same time it's navigating.

But for the price, it's worth the trouble.

That's right it does not have an HDD, but it does have some internal memory that allows it to store the route so you can still have nav. without the DVD in but you can't change it unless you put the DVD back in.

As for pics:

hey david, have you priced them on eBay (http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?from=R40&satitle=pioneer+avic+d3&category0=)?

Yup, I did. Crutchfield ended up having a deal where you get a free reverse camera that normally costs $250. Plus it comes from Crutchfield, so I get a bunch of installation hardware as well as coming from an authorized dealer.

The money saved on ebay would have been around 30-50 bucks, so I figured that I'd just go through CF.

oh, heck yeah. i didn't realize the reverse camera was THAT much more...

good choice BTW from what i can tell.

It's in!!!

The only issue, no pictures. Didn't have my camera with me when I went to install it. However, I might be having to add some more stuff to it, so now that it's all wired up, I'll get some pictures for every one to see.

Oh, and BTW, this thing rocks + 7/8ths

I'm looking forward to seeing pictures how the HU looks installed. I've been thinking about something like that, just can't bring myself to drop that amount of change yet. Who knows, that could always change...

Will you also take a side shot or two of the HU mounted? I'm curious to see how far (if any) it sits out from the dash. Oh and don't forget to get a night shot of it in action...so we can see how it looks at night. :D

that thing is NICE, do you have satellite radio ? if so do ya mind getting a pic with the sirius on ?

oly884

I've got XM instead of sirius.

However, I still have my xm roadie. I thought about getting my service put on my new deck, but I like the ability to take my XM receiver in side my apartment and be able to listen in there. If I get it put on my deck, not only do I have to buy a $100 box to do so, but I also loose the ability to have XM in my place. So, I just hooked it up to the external jacks and it seems to work just fine.

I'll get some more pics of my entire setup when I get around to it.

Looks great David! It doesn't stick out as far as I thought it might. Wow that screen is big too.

I'm sure you're busy, but when you get around to it, will you post some night shots of the unit in action. Just curious how well the lights on the unit itself blend with the lights on the dash of your truck.

Again, looks good.

Hey, so dusty already?! What gives! :D

Looks excellent; doesn't stick out a lot and being black with no flashy buttons, looks almost OEM. If I had the money and a guarantee that it wouldn't be stolen ( it would be ) , I'd certainly look into a similar unit. I think I'd want mine with an HDD of some sort....I'm guessing the internal memory is flash based, which is good. With all the bumps and jolts offroad, I'm not sure how well a micro-drive or similar hdd with moving parts would hold up. Some of these HUs come close to being a carputer.

oly884

Nick, you're spot on. The one down side to the flash based memory is that you do have to put in the navigation DVD to set waypoints, view POI's, and things of that nature. However I'm planning on picking up an 80GB Ipod to hold all my music, thus removing the need for me to use CD's or the like for music.

If you're on a budget this unit is great, and the reverse camera really helps out in my case (with the camper).

Oh, and it's dusty because I was camping at the time, but she's all clean now.

I hate to tell you this OLY, but the older you get the less you seem to listen to music. :guitar: TJ

How does it handle off the pavement?

Does it have breadcrumb capabilities for trails not on the DVD database?

oly884
09-12-2007, 09:18 PM
Will, sorry for the long wait on the response.

It does great off the pavement, no issues as of yet and just last weekend I put 200+ miles off road.

Sadly, no breadcrumb abilities. I keep my Garmin vista for that.
