I want an SLR camera so bad... but here's what I've got from a few nights ago. All the shots are taken at about 2am, with an exceptionally bright moon out. I'm going to go poke around and see if I can find some more... Yet more pushing the old S70 to it's limits

Here are some older shots-

Tucson Night with a storm overhead

San Clemente, CA, Dock with waves. I find it really interesting that the waves a blur into a mist.

http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l70/mastacox/Night%20Scenery/SanClemente055.jpg

Now here are some really interesting pictures. That year there was a red tide at San Clemente, so at night each time the waves crashed they would flash blue like a fluorescent light from the bioluminescent stuff in the water (algae, plankton, I dunno). The pictures are really noisy, but I'm glad I could actually capture a few of the waves...

Haven't got many up on the web, but here's a 2 hr exposure with my D70.

*note, digital SLR's are NOT good at these long exposures.

I really need an SLR badly, because I have definitely outgrown the point-and-shooter. Still, the one(s) I want are so I expensive I am forced to live by the mantra "it isn't the camera, it's the photographer." I've run into some real limitations with the S70; don't get me wrong, it's a great camera and has served me well, but the ISO settings (ISO 400 max, and it's grainy as hell at that setting; similar to a modern DSLR at ISO 1600 or maybe higher) and maximum exposure time of 15 seconds have really limited my low-light works.

I'm really excited to see what I can do with a Canon 5D and an image stabilized lens... must find $3000 and a deal on Ebay :( Or I wouldn't say no to a 1Ds Mark II either, but it's a big bastard (that's ok, I'm a big bastard too :D).

As for selling pics, I've considered it, but I don't think I have the necessary equipment yet. Still, I DO plan on framing some of my better work and using it as "art" around the house...

Ok i think i might not fully understand the long exposure thing. do you have to leave the camera in the same place for that long to take the pic? How did you get the "circular" effect with the stars?

ummm... the earth isn't stationary. you have to have a tripod and leave the camera for however long you set the exposure for. it needs to be absolutely, perfectly still - so no holding it - and you will need a remote so you don't have to touch it. the swirling effect is due to the spin of the earth. that's how much you move, in relation to the stars, in a 2hr period.

Yup, the camera needs to be mounted on a tripod so it doesn't move. Then you can leave the aperture open for a very long time to capture enough light for the pictures.

The stars rotating is the real thing. The stars rotate in the sky as the earth turns (soap opera?). One of the first pictures I'm interested in taking when I get a DSLR is pointing it directly at the north star and keeping the shutter open for about two hours or so. You see, the north star is the only star in the sky that doesn't move (hence the name, the north star), so when you take a very long exposure of it, it will stay in the same place and all of the other stars rotate about it. In Oly's picture, the north star is just off the left side of the picture, based on that you can kind of judge where the center of rotation is.

Very cool picture.
