View Full Version : Should I put '05+ Taco rims on a '90 4Runner? Update: Now with new pics!

I need a set of tires really bad (front two are flat now :hillbill:), but after looking around for a set of used 31x10.50R15 tires to get me by, I thought maybe I'd look around for other options as well. I found a set of '05+ Tacoma rims for sale locally. I think I can get both the rims and tires for $350. Tires have 13k on them and are Dueller H/Ts.
So, should I get these rims/tires,
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a256/DH6twinotter/tacomarims.jpg
And put them on this?
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a256/DH6twinotter/misc/4RunnerpictureOS.jpg
I'm thinking that I may be able to pick up these wheels and run them temporarily till I get a stable job and can afford a new set of 31s or maybe 33s for my MT classic rims. Then I may be able to resell the Taco rims and get my money back. Question I have though: Do you all think there is much demand for the Taco rims? I know the 5 star 4Runner rims, the FJ rims, and some Tundra rims sell pretty good, but I dunno about these. Of course, I may like the taco rims and decide to keep them for a bit, but just wanted to see what you all thought. I'm not convinced new '05+ rims would look good on a '90 4Runner.
I would really rather pick up a set of used 31s, but the pickings seem kinda slim, so I'm considering this route.
Thanks folks. :D

well depends on how tight money is. the thing about used tires is you still need to pay to get them mounted and balanced. you can just bolt those up, so those are like buying some used tires at $250 and having them mounted. plus you get some rims that have to be worth, at a minimum, $100 cause there alloy.

Im pretty sure your a smart guy, But please test fit first and make sure A: They clear the brakes on all 4 corners and A arms on the front. And b: would obviously be that they actually bolt up...I dont see why not though. But yeah, I say why not, They look great, Ive seen some on YT on 3rd gens, I think the look more Hardcore then the 3rd gen 3 spoke. :bling:

how much are new tires? is it cheaper to get a second set of wheels/tires? what are you going to do with your old set? where do you plan to store it?
one thing I learned from storing tires/wheels. damn *&@(*#& takes up a lot of room so if you're tight on space, you might consider just taking up in the rear and just get some new tires to replace your existing one.
some food for thought :)
btw, stock wheels are slow movers.

Tough to find new tires for less than 100/tire, I'd say it's a good deal. Not sure about those wheels, but would guess they have to be worth at least 200 by themselves. I'd say go for it!

I think I've seen those rims move pretty quick on ttora. They aren't as common as the snowflake tacoma rim, so they are easier to sell. I say get them and sell your old rims.

Yeah, if I get these, I'll probably drive the 4Runner over and test fit a rim on the front just to make sure the front of the caliper has clearance. Diameter wise, the Taco rims should be fine since they are 17". I agree, the 5 spoke rims look better than the 3. :D
Lance, Brian, Troyboy--The cheapest 31x10.50r15 tire I could find that was a half way descent tire was about $130 each on discounttiredirect.com. So, if I did get these and hang on to them for a year or so, I could probably get $300 for the rims and maybe $200 for the tires. Maybe. These rims are at least $400 on ebay, but I dunno if those are selling. And like Troy says, I won't have to pay to get these mounted and balanced. Seems like a pretty good deal.
Lance, my old set of factory steel rims are stored under my parent's house for now. They aren't overly thrilled about storing those wheels, but I don't think they would mind a second set for the time being. I may even just sell the steel rims.
Chris, I dunno if I want to sell my old rims or not. I guess I'll see how much I like the taco rims. My MT classic rims are pretty dirty, but if I clean them up and sell them, I could get $100 or so for the set. Maybe more.
Also, if I end up getting a Tundra in a bit, I think the Tacoma rims would look good on a Tundra, especially if the Tundra is black or gray and I paint the rims. :D Some of the Tundra's have nice rims to begin with though.
There was a guy in VA beach running painted FJ cruiser rims on his 2nd gen with 285s (yes, he said they rubbed a bit on the pinch weld but not bad--this was a street queen though). He had a Toyota diesel swapped in too. Super nice 2nd gen. :D
So, I'm going to look around a bit more for some used 31s, but I'm seriously considering these. Thanks for the input so far guys.
I sound like such a nOOb in this thread.

Well, unless I find a deal on some used 31s, I'm heading over tomorrow at 4:00 to do a test fit and see how it looks.
Hopefully the lug nuts I have will work. :hillbill:

So, I picked up the wheels today. The guy was super cool and let me test fit on both the front and back. They fit fine! The front center caps don't fit around the hub, but I'm going to see if I can trim them to fit. Tie rod end on the front is about an inch from the tire, and about the same with the sway bar endlinks on the rear. If I go with tires any bigger in the future, I'll probably have to get wheel spacers.
They look better than I thought they would too. Definately a departure from the look I've been going for, but I can't complain. Deal was good. Tires still have the tire pressure sensors in them too. :D
I'll post up some pics tomorrow when I have some light out. :D

Well, got them all on. Passenger side clearance between the tire and rear sway bar endlink is a bit tighter than on the driver's side. Should work fine though.
Anyways, here are some pictures (Note: The back of my 4Runner is loaded down with my floor jack, tools, and old tires/rims, so it's sagging a bit. :hillbill:)
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a256/DH6twinotter/4Runner/IMG_2670.jpg
The wheels don't stick out much from the side and are pretty much flush with the running boards. :tapedshut: I kinda miss watching my old 31s go round and round in my side view mirror. :hillbill:
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a256/DH6twinotter/4Runner/IMG_2671.jpg
These wheels are growing on me. They came off a '08 Taco and are in near perfect condition. A bit more bling than I usually like, but if I ever run 35s and wheel spacers with these, I don't think they will be half bad. :D
Also, I tinkered around with the center caps a bit more today, and there is no way to make them fit the front. The bolts on the hub stick out too far and block the clips. Spacers should fix this though, but I'm not going that route for now. I'll just run it without the center caps.
If anybody wants to trade this set of rims for a set of LX450 rims, let me know. :hillbill:

Those rims look sharp dude!

A front diff, and a t-case :-)

Larger tires, front diff, and a t-case are on my list of things I'd like to do. What approach I'm going to take and when it's going to get done is the question. :D I need a job and a DD first. :D
I use way too many smilies in my posts. :D :hillbill:

Dan,
I am sure we can find you a diff and t-case cheap in a junkyard, too bad my front diff doesn't fit in.
If it did I would let you 'borrow' my diffs so you can be 4wd :-)

Looks great, it's odd that buying wheel/used tire combos can be the cheapest way to get fresh rubber sometimes.
BTW, those rims are kind of mesmerizing for passengers in other cars. At speed they appear almost solid, and the little steps make lines.

Thanks Chris. Let me know if down the road you need an extra set of wheels for your Tacoma. :D

Yeah, I found a set of used 31s a bit ago for $175, but it kinda fell through I guess. I dunno. Anyways, by the time I would have purchased those and paid for shipping, mounting, and balancing, I would have come out to nearly $350. The tires I have now will last me longer too. Plus I have better resale value with the rims, tires, and pressure sensors. :D
Interesting note about the rims too. I've noticed this on the Tacomas and 4Runners I've seen driving around.

Okay, with how good those look, I have now changed my vote to number 4(I had to, that's such a funny option for the poll). :flipoff: Although "library crawler" would be more accurate. :D
I wonder how those would look painted or powdercoated black with some bigger tires with aggressive tread?

I think they would look good with bigger tires. I thought about painting them too, but I think I'll just go that route if/when I build bumpers. If I had a different colored 4Runner like grey, silver, or black, painted wheels would look better. I dunno with the light blue though. I think having the bumpers and rims chrome/polished or all painted black would look the best, not mix and matched. :D I dunno. Bigger tires would definately look great though.
Taco rims painted would look good on your grey 2nd gen, Chris. :D

Hey guys, I've got a dumb question for you all. I dunno what kind of lug nuts I need. The holes on the rims aren't beveled, but my old lug nuts are. Do I need to find some lug nuts that aren't beveled? Ebay has both beveled and non-beveled, both claiming they fit Toyota Tacomas. Does it matter? :headscratch:
slosurfer
02-19-2009, 09:39 AM
Do they have the centering shank that goes through the alloy wheels?
If so then it shouldn't matter if the very end is beveled or not? I would go with beveled because the beveled ones will work on your spare steel wheel. My stock ones that were on my 4runner had the centering part and were beveled at the end and I believe that it was so that it could be used on the spare steel rim since those need a beveled end. Does that make sense?
DHC6twinotter
02-19-2009, 09:49 AM
Nope, no shank. My old lug nuts look like the top ones in this picture:
http://tbn3.google.com/images?q=tbn:pyMTO1zYsH9ZvM:http://www.motorera.com/dictionary/pics/L/lugnut.jpg
I think I need the bottom style.
I'll have to see if I can find my old old lug nuts. If not, I think I may need new lug nuts. :chair:

Put a wanted add up on ttora and maybe customtacos, I'm sure someone has gone aftermarket and still has their stock nuts.
Notice how the very end has the taper to it so it can be used with the spare steel wheel.

i almost dropped a couple bucks a piece on a replacement set, but luckily tried pepboys first. They were pretty reasonable and seemed to be fine quality, maybe $1/per nut.

Chris, I registered on Tacoma Territory, but it looks like they've got an activation period I've got to wait on. :headscratch: I'll post up a WTB listing once I get fully activated.
Brian, Pep Boys didn't have what I needed. Neither did Advanced Auto. AutoZone does have them at $2.00 each, and the local dealer said he would give them to me for $3.00 each (list was like 4.50 ). Still trying to find some cheaper though.

It seems like the moderators have to manually accept new registrations, so I guess there is a wait period. It lets me log in, just not post anything yet. Kinda a different setup I guess. Maybe it'll let me in a couple days or so.
