View Full Version : Requesting diagnosis help for abnormal throttle response

Alright, im thinking it may be the o2 sensor.

-Driving along (any rpm) and the check engine light will flash and then if under load buck, almost like i threw my foot on the clutch right quick, if i am not on the throttle it will flash and nothing will happen

-Almost no power at normal rpm, get up around 3000 and all of a sudden full power like it will sit you back in the seat

- I have a k&n air filter on it and you can hear it sucking air hard between 2600 and 3000 before it picks up.

i am going to take a o2 sensor off my parts truck and my little brothers truck tomorrow and see if it helps, if not i have no idea...

oh yea, i had a 2.5" magnaflow muffler on her, but i took it off and put the stocker back on, so i dont know if that may have changed something

thanks for any help

A flashing cel usually coincides with a coil pack, but looking at that you have an old truck you have a distributor.

o2 sensor usually just makes the truck run rich or lean, sound more like you have a miss somewhere...

Thats as much as I can gather from your description.

Before you start swapping parts, you need to pull the code. That will lead you in the right direction. Let me see if I can find a link to how to do that. All you need is a paperclip.

Also, what year/motor/tranny are we talking about here?

Pull the code before anything else..

Sounds like a miss to me

The reason i figured o2 sensor is because a friend had the same problem and thats all it was.

I played with the idle a little tonight but that changed nothing.

She has a mean old tick, but it has had it for years, never burnt oil, it had good compression 4-5 months ago, no idea now.

At idle (800) she shakes a lot more, nothing crazy but noticeable. I also noticed that there is a rattle coming from the lifter area. I pulled the sparkplugs and they where clean. im lost.

Definately need to pull the codes and tell us what you get. Try this for help on how to pull codes on your engine.

Rattle could be anything, but usually when it runs rough its a miss.

Do this: Put your foot firmly on the brake, then slowly race it up while letting off the clutch. If she starts to shake and make awful noises you got a nice miss.

Def pull the codes tho.

huh look at that

about a month ago i was blasting through some show drifts and under my hood got packed full of snow, she melted and where the "jumper" wire is in them pictures was a little staple looking thing that got red hot and melted everything, so i took er out not thinking anything of it... ill look at er in the morning and do a re-connect using that wire set-up and see if that fixes her.

well, that "wire setup" isn't supposed to be there for normal operation. It isn't a "fix", it will allow you to pull the codes for what is wrong with your engine. You need to pull the codes, find out what is wrong (the code will help with that), fix it, and then clear the codes.

well, since you obviously didn't read the first link I posted, here's another link to READ on how to pull your codes. No computer or tools needed, merely a paperclip or wire.

Yep, like Chris said, all you need is a paperclip or wire. The Check Engine Light will tell you the rest.

One of the benefits of owning a Toyota. :D

i have it/ part of it figured out...

i went out an sat in my truck trying this code thing and my fuel pump is making all kinds of noises, that would explane the powerlodd and the bucking.

edit: yup, got her fixed, there was a bad wire going to the pump, ran a new on and she is good as new...

thanks for the help, ryan

 Glad you got it fixed. :D

Make sure you clear the code by pulling your efi fuse for a couple minutes. Then you will know if the CEL comes back on later, that it is for something else.

I think I got it figured out, I took my gf's dad (ex mechanic) for a drive in it and he told me he figured it was the distributor was faulty and letting water in.... wd40 displaces water, coated everything and she runs like a top... its only a temp fix, im going to rip the distributor off my 87 parts truck and see if it will bolt up, but at least its running so I can get to school.

well, I hope that works for you

I don't understand why you got a CEL and won't pull the codes.
