rear suspension height (rim to wheel well)

the old and the Old Man Emu - the original spring pack was 3 mains + 1 overload - the OME pack is 4 mains + 2 overloads (main leaves are about the same thickness as the originals)

Energy Suspension bumpstops, Marlin U-Bolt flip (note the excess trimmed off the top of the u-bolts)- this pic was with the weight of the axle pulling on the springs, I need to get a longer rear brake hose yet (just a slight pull on the hose like this, but add the weight of tires though and it'll probably get pulled on too much) I'm also not sure how I like the bumpstop placement, I think it might get destroyed by the u-bolt nuts. I may end up welding a shallow platform on top of the u-bolt plate for the bumpstop to bolt to and let it contact the factory strike plate. I'm also not ecstatic about how the e-brake cable is being pulled on (maybe a transfer case e-brkae in the future?)

shock mount welded on, while doing the install I measured and mounted everything for 11.5" stroke Bilstein 5150's.

http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk171/batardsalamano/suspension/100_3031.jpg
new height - I guess my old springs were really sagging, the OME springs should have only given me 2" (+ my shackles from the old springs give another 1.25") - I got about 5.5" total
http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk171/batardsalamano/suspension/100_2852.jpg

Well, this is more height than I wanted, it looks downright goofy like this. I don't have the shocks on the back yet either, the dumpy Rancho's will bolt up to the mounts, but I'll have 0 down travel. Once I get the Bilsteins on, the back end will come up a bit more too (gas pressure). So I'm thinking I need to put some stock length shackles back in to drop the height a bit and hope the springs settle.

Hope you don't mind me posting this . . . .

Hey, I wanted to reply to your latest post but can't since it's a garage thread. First off, I dig the work you are doing on your rig, very cool mods. Anyway, I got the same thing when I put my OME's on, and have read the same from others. I'm not convinced they are really a 2" spring. I did keep 7 bags of concrete in the back for a couple months and that seemed to help them settle in some but not to where they should have. I'm tempted to take them back out and mix a few stock leaves in the pack to try and bring the back down some more.

Brian

I'm not sure I would want to mix any of the stock springs with the new ones (besides I want to build a giant crossbow with the old stock springs, my goal is to be able to launch 4x4 posts through a cinderblock wall :hillbill:). I might take the small overload out and the one main leaf next to the overloads, or just the one main leaf and leave the overloads on. That should give it a bit more flex and, with the shorter shackle (pending more measurements to make sure it won't bind the spring), shouldn't really affect my shock length choice - the max possible jounce and rebound aren't going to change + a shorter shackle should give me more shackle angle at ride height (near verticle now, just got to make sure there is no possibility of shackle inversion.

Sorry Keith, I dunno what to tell you about the springs, but please make a build up thread for your crossbow! I've wanted to build a large scale trebuchet for a while. Medieval weaponry fascinates me. :hillbill:

Sorry for hijacking your thread. :D

I didn't know you were turning it into a dragster! :D Yeah, I vote try your stock shackles and see how it does.

First pic looks like there is a murder scene chalk outline around your 4runner.

You 4Runner looks like mine now,

HUGE REAR RAKE.......

I would try the old shackles first and then maybe remove a leaf.
or you could crank your torsions more and add BJ spacers (if you don't have them already :D ) and run some 35s lol

No problem . . . here's one leaf spring crossbow (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xLMd_B5bJU8), but I'm thinking more along the lines of one main leaf on each side and using the original square u-bolts to anchor it all together. it might be awhile before I get to that though, I'll see if I can post a pic

Nah, I don't believe in ball joint spacers (added leverage on attaching hardware), though I was thinking about 25mm Sway-A-Way torsion bars - though I only ever really plan on going with 33's at the next tire change (my 32's are old and the rubber isn't very pliable anymore so it gets a bit squirrelly sometimes). I like this guys take on fitting big tires, 37's with no lift (though it is an '85)

There is a guy on PATTora running 35s with no lift on his 88 ;-)
He just did a little fender trimming, hence the suggestion :-)

that 4runner is a 85 with 37s stock

made a new set of shackles - 4" eye to eye out this "muscle car" shackle kit ($15)
http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk171/batardsalamano/suspension/100_2995.jpg
took the bottom overload leaf out - it didn't look like it would do anything anyway, just acted like a spacer or 3/8" lift block - I left the top overload leaf in to help control axle wrap. You can't really tell it, but I also added an extra gusset to the lower shock mount to get more surface area on the axle tube (probably wraps just under 1/2 way around now)
http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk171/batardsalamano/suspension/100_3002.jpg
moved the Energy Suspension bumpstop down to the bottom by welding a perch onto the u-bolt plate (left over 1/4" flat from shortening the shackles)
http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk171/batardsalamano/suspension/100_3004.jpg
and lost about 2" . . . which means I gained 3.5" from the OME's
http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk171/batardsalamano/suspension/100_3010.jpg
This I can live with, a little bit of rake and it doesn't look nearly as goofy anymore :D

So you going to make it to spring fling then :-)
Looks good!

I just got some steel from a friend so buy tomorrow I should have some sliders and a skid for the t-case...

My buddy had the exact same problem with his OME springs on his '87 single cab. He has to put a large amount of weight in the bed to get it to sit anywhere close to level and ride somewhat smooth. His shackle angle is also vertical like i noticed in your first pictures. Just a poorly designed spring length for these trucks I think..

Much better, you are still getting way more than 2" lift from them but it sits about right now I think.

Thanks, I'm hoping to make it, but I might be cash poor for awhile if this house purchase (http://www.ultimateyota.com/index.php?option=com_smf&Itemid=26&topic=7391.0) goes through . . . we'll see

I also just ordered my Bilstein 5150's
BF5-A197-H0 - 11.50 stroke - 170/60 valving - 27.99 extended - 16.50 collapsed - 14mm shaft dia

Man, these things were a pain to compress to get into position. I ended up leaving the plastic straps on and jacking up the frame to get them in. Now I gotta find a dirt road to go on some high speed strafing runs . . .

Looks good!

Hard to tell, but it looks like the shock will bottom out before your bumpstops hit. Looks like there is more room between your bumpstops than shaft left on the shock.

Thanks, it's a bit of an optical trick since the shocks are on an angle towards (or away from) the camera - I actually had it figured out that I should have ~1/2" of travel left in the shock with the bumpstop fully compressed, I still have to flex it out though to make sure.
