He just made a very bad move and cost himself the next election if he tried as well as anyone who supports him and his endeavors.. Heck, it may cost him much greater things than his political career.

The Obama administration will seek to reinstate the assault weapons ban that expired in 2004 during the Bush administration, Attorney General Eric Holder said today.

Wednesday Attorney General Eric Holder said that the Obama administration will seek to reinstitute the assault weapons ban which expired in 2004 during the Bush administration.
(AP Photos/ABC News Graphic )"As President Obama indicated during the campaign, there are just a few gun-related changes that we would like to make, and among them would be to reinstitute the ban on the sale of assault weapons," Holder told reporters.

Holder said that putting the ban back in place would not only be a positive move by the United States, it would help cut down on the flow of guns going across the border into Mexico, which is struggling with heavy violence among drug cartels along the border.

"I think that will have a positive impact in Mexico, at a minimum." Holder said at a news conference on the arrest of more than 700 people in a drug enforcement crackdown on Mexican drug cartels operating in the U.S.

Obama Election Sparks Gun Sales Gun Laws Across Nation Face ScrutinyGun Control Group Braces for Court LossMexican government officials have complained that the availability of sophisticated guns from the United States have emboldened drug traffickers to fight over access routes into the U.S.

A State Department travel warning issued Feb. 20, 2009, reflected government concerns about the violence.

"Some recent Mexican army and police confrontations with drug cartels have resembled small-unit combat, with cartels employing automatic weapons and grenades," the warning said. "Large firefights have taken place in many towns and cities across Mexico, but most recently in northern Mexico, including Tijuana, Chihuahua City and Ciudad Juarez."

At the news conference today, Holder described his discussions with his Mexican counterpart about the recent spike in violence.

"I met yesterday with Attorney General Medina Mora of Mexico, and we discussed the unprecedented levels of violence his country is facing because of their enforcement efforts," he said.

Holder declined to offer any time frame for the reimplementation of the assault weapons ban, however.

"It's something, as I said, that the president talked about during the campaign," he said. "There are obviously a number of things that are -- that have been taking up a substantial amount of his time, and so, I'm not sure exactly what the sequencing will be."

In a brief interview with ABC News, Wayne LaPierre, president of the National Rifle Association, said, "I think there are a lot of Democrats on Capitol Hill cringing at Eric Holder's comments right now."

During his confirmation hearing, Holder told the Senate Judiciary Committee about other gun control measures the Obama administration may consider.

I think closing the gun show loophole, the banning of cop-killer bullets and I also think that making the assault weapons ban permanent, would be something that would be permitted under Heller," Holder said, referring to the Supreme Court ruling in Washington, D.C. v. Heller, which asserted the Second Amendment as an individual's right to own a weapon.

The Assault Weapons Ban signed into law by President Clinton in 1994 banned 19 types of semi-automatic military-style guns and ammunition clips with more than 10 rounds.

"A semi-automatic is a quintessential self-defense firearm owned by American citizens in this country," LaPierre said. "I think it is clearly covered under Heller and it's clearly, I think, protected by the Constitution."

Quote:
My first priority will be to reinstate the assault weapons ban as soon as I take office. Within 90 days, we will go back after kitchen table dealers, and work to end the gun show and internet sales loopholes. In the first year, I intend to work with Congress on a national no carry law, 1 gun a month purchase limits, and bans on all semi-automatic guns. --Barack Obama, VPC Fund Raiser, 2007

Yup, Obama isn't going to touch our guns...

I feel sorry for every person that voted for him and believed that.

The "I TOLD YOU SO" shirts and stickers are going to the presses.

It's no secret he had it up on his website in the early days of his campaign, once he started taking some flack about it it was taken down. That same exact verbiage has been up on the white house web site since he has taken office.

The last list I saw had the mini-14 and M1A on it. Pretty Scary.

Maybe they should have a drug ban, you know make drugs illegal and that would take away their need for the guns. Oh, wait drugs are illegal. That's exactly how well the assault weapons ban will effect these guys, some people (like our Sheriff) will use any excuse to support their agenda.

If he goes thru with it he costs himself and anyone who votes for it their position. OR WORSE!

They didnt learn about 10 years back did they? Not only that but this time I highly doubt people will take it lying down like last time.

The black market grows cause of this...

david, i agree strongly with the "i told you so" bumperstickers.

everyone is shocked that i truly dislike obama, because i hated bush so much. its not about one side vs. the other, party lines, etc. its about whats right, and right now, obama is wrong.

fortunately (or unfortunately, depending) this country has changed alot since the last weapons band. im not entirely sure people will follow along like sheep this time. most will, because thats their nature. but i think a much larger group will be standing up this time compared to last (i know im in that category, i was little when the last one came in).

i think alot more people will be following Heston on this one: "from my cold, dead hand"

I think you're right, he'll be in for a fight, it won't be passed quietly, that's for sure!

What amazes me is how many people simply believed Obama when he said that he wouldn't touch our guns, it's lies lies lies. I said it then, and there were even members or this board who said that "obama said he wouldn't touch your guns". I'm not wanting to call anyone out, but it's important that these people who made these claims recognize that they were being lied to. That is of course assuming that they knew he'd do it, but just said something to try and quiet us down.

It's absurd what is being proposed, it's going to cause problems like nothing else in this country and is only going to create MORE civil unrest. You combine the economy, growing government, and DISARMAMENT, and there are people who simply will not stand for it. I HOPE it never gets to that point, because that will not help our cause, it will only hurt us. However, we do need to start working on fighting this, educating people, getting the message out there. I sent a message to everyone I know on facebook, I suggest we all do that. The more people that know, the better it will be. Let THE PEOPLE choose these things. I have a feeling that most of the american public is against an assault weapons ban, but sadly, we have elected a small group of individuals that are choosing not to represent the people, but rather enact and enforce their political beliefs.

I think they are in for more of a fight than they anticipate. The first assault weapons ban passed becaused nobody thought it would and left the fight to the activists. When it did pass the wave of shock that passed over the country was palpable. On the very next election the Dems lost their decades long grip on congressional power and Clinton found himself in a position of weakness. He was then forced to reform welfare and run a balanced budget with conservative principles. He had to moderate his court nominations etc.

Obama believes the deafening cacophony of adoration that surrounds him right now while ignoring the millions seathing with every Socialist stroke of his pen. He will over reach and that is when the tide will turn and he will be discovered as the proverbial naked emperor. He'll be neutered politically and contained. The American population will swing the pedulum in the opposite direction and learn to ignore the left. Nobody likes rapid and extreme cultural change.

Of all the issues that need to be face he goes after gun control. Lets be honest... by the time we pay for his life time healthcare, debt from the stimulus, and what ever else he does we will not have the money for a gun let alone ammo.

Pelosi throws cold water on weapons ban
By Mike Soraghan

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi tossed cold water on the prospect of reinstating the assault weapons ban, highlighting Democrats’ reluctance to take on gun issues.

Attorney General Eric Holder raised the prospect Wednesday that the administration would push to bring back the ban. But Pelosi (D-Calif.) indicated on Thursday that he never talked to her. The Speaker gave a flat “no” when asked if she had talked to administration officials about the ban.

“On that score, I think we need to enforce the laws we have right now,” Pelosi said at her weekly news conference. “I think it's clear the Bush administration didn’t do that.”

Outside of the dig at the recent Republican president, that phrase is the stock line of those who don’t want to pass new gun control laws, such as the National Rifle Association.

The White House declined to comment on Holder's remarks, referring reporters to the Department of Justice. The DoJ did not respond to The Hill's request for comment.

Reid joins Pelosi in opposing ban revival

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) will join House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) in opposing any effort to revive the 1994 assault-weapons ban, putting them on the opposite side of the Obama administration.

Reid spokesman Jim Manley said the Nevada Democrat will preserve his traditional pro-gun rights voting record.

"Sen. Reid would oppose an effort [to] reinstate the ban if the Senate were to vote on it in the future," Manley told The Hill in an e-mail late Thursday night.

It was not immediately clear whether Reid would block the bill from the Senate, but his opposition casts serious doubt on its chances. Also, Manley noted that Reid voted against the ban in 1994 and again when it expired in 2004.

Reid's stance joins him with Pelosi, who told reporters Thursday that the administration had not checked with her before Attorney General Eric Holder told reporters the administration would attempt to reinstate the ban. Pelosi gave a flat “no” when asked if she had spoken to Holder or any other administration officials about the issue.

“On that score, I think we need to enforce the laws we have right now,” Pelosi said at her weekly news conference. “I think it's clear the Bush administration didn’t do that.”

Outside of the dig at the recent Republican president, that phrase is the stock line of those who don’t want to pass new gun control laws, such as the National Rifle Association (NRA).

Holder said during a press conference Wednesday in Phoenix that Obama had made reinstating the ban one of his campaign promises.

"There are obviously a number of things that are — that have been taking up a substantial amount of his time, and so I’m not sure exactly what the sequencing will be," Holder said. "It is something, however, that we still think would be an appropriate thing to do."

The news caught Capitol Hill by surprise, immediately pitting Democrats and Republicans against each other and even exposing deep divides among Democrats. A number of House Democrats lost their seats after being targeted by the NRA for voting for the 1994 ban.
