Dude, get a check from the insurance company and go aftermarket.
Did your airbag go off? If not then it's not totaled.
I needed whole new rear quarter, new rear driver side door, rear axle and all components and side section of rear bumper, not to mention paint and so on.
That's over 4k worth of damage, so your good.

But like everyone else said, time to evaluate your driving style.
I had to.....

At least everyone is ok

I thought this was going to be that Top Gear Toyota Hilux video that pops up every other day on some forums. :D

Bummer about your Taco Steve! Is the radiator and AC condensor fine? It looks like most of the damage is just cosmetic. I wonder how easy it is to swap the '01-04 front ends on. :headscratch:

Oh ok. I saw a Tacoma with a front end swap on Autotrader a while back and thought it looked nice. I wasn't sure how much work went into it.

Steve, I vote for just getting an aftermarket bumper and glass fenders. Then long travel. :D

Scuba
03-11-2009, 10:12 AM
Chris, Yes it still ran, Radiator wasnt punctured, Idk about the ac condensor, There were not any leaks under where it was sitting for about 30 mins.

The Way I hit the bumper took the most of it, I believe the passenger side fender is fine.
NO the Airbag Did Not go off.

I think parts list for it will be driver fender, hood, grille, bumper, and straighten out the core support..

I told my mom IDC anymore when/ if I get this thing back its not going to be driven a lot.

Lance, No crapper here, I was talking to a buddy on YT about starting a custom front bumper and an exo/cage.
After I get it back from the shop first thing will be finding an arc welder...Then practice and practice while I save up for a tubing bender, and a notcher...
Then Ill be set...

is that why you have a broken headlight mounting tab?

broken light tab? bah I have 3 LF's up front, I don't need any stinkin light tab for my headlamp! :D

Get a mig (cheap and easy to use) and a grinder to cut stuff up. A tube bender would be killer too but a mig + grinder will get you the basics and have you up and running in a hurry.

Not sure what your goals are at this point but I'd say depending on how much sheet metal damage you have an engine cage might be a great idea instead of trying to fix all of that sheet metal. It'll be a lot of work (prob more than what I'll ever want to do ever) but it'll be much stronger later on should you decide to hit something/one ;)

With a proper design on the engine cage you can easily make it look aesthetically pleasing too utilizing a combination of either your stock fenders or fiberglass fenders. :)

Well thats the thing, Im 99 percent sure that the insurance is fixing it...

Thus being said, I just got to talking with a buddy saying I need a damn cage.

:bling:

you dont need a cage...you need to just stop running into things. if you build it just to smash into things you will lose your crumple zones and end up getting hurt or pushing someones motor into there lap. just start driving boring style like your parents do.

CJM
03-13-2009, 08:21 PM
No its still funny now..

Yea Scuba, go take some lessons-it can only help. I mean I drive for a living and I aint perfect and had my fair share. But if theres one thing I live by-unless I am in a rush I drive real easy. Not only is a 3.4L V6 thirsty if you keep on the skinny pedal-but you drive way to hard on the truck.

Go take a defensive driving course, i took one for the insurance break and was very happy with the instructor (I got this funny old dude) and what I gained from it. Plus the ins break was nice. I also took more than a few thru AAA (since I am a contractor for them) for free. Driving everything from a squad style car, work truck to a full on tractor trailer and many tow trucks. See if AAA in your area offers it, they have good classes and are recognized as an ins break. The best one I took was defensive driving-IE: when its wet how to keep control, how to avoid an accident if possible, etc.

The larger the vehicle you drive tho, the better you get b/c you must be more carefull and easy. I normally drive a fullsize work van and all I have is mirrors and backdoors-the sidedoor has no window and the truck itself is big, loaded down and not that controllable. Also driven flatbeds and wreckers with stuff on them, talk about gentle driving if you can.

Sorry to ramble, but you need to do somethin dude

Scuba
03-14-2009, 12:12 AM
Funny you say that dude, When I get the truck back I was going to contact my agent and see if he can direct me in the right way, I know my driving styles need to change, I dont want to get droped from our insurance policy.

I actually was court ordered to take defensive driving a few years back but alas I was young and :smokin: and wasnt payin attention, The free pizza that day was the best :D

But enough with that. Like I was saying, CJM I plan on doing what you said...

*Thought about a course through the local SCCA Track? You get to learn defensive driving plus tactics for at speed incidents.

I got certified (many) years ago and I can vouch that the lessons there have saved my life and my current vehicle's integrity more than once, including a moment with my now-scrapped Pontiac where an idiot ran a stop and put her front grille into my passenger side and the door almost into my lap.

Here's who my instructor was, really great guy.. (http://www.skipbarber.com/locations/mazda_raceway.aspx?AspxAutoDetectCookieSupport=1) I'm sure there's a couple down your way. We not only had the track, but also a section of land we played around off-road with. This is down your way... (http://www.loscabosguide.com/wideopen.htm)

Check the local Sheriffs offices too.

Me an my Brother took an EVOC class (emergency vehicle operations class) with a local Sheriffs training facility (Contra Costa for you locals)

It was like $400 but oh so much fun and worth it.

Accident avoidance, normal driving/parking techniques, skid plan.
Can you say 360 in a crown vic at speed and keep it in side the lanes? and end it pointed exactly where you need to be facing.

Good times!

All these classes are helpful. However, I sense that your issue is due to not making good decisions and not paying attention...which classes wont help you with.

CJM
03-17-2009, 08:20 AM
FWIW, keep back more distance and drive slower. Worked wonders for me cause I used to follow to close. Learned the hard way a few times with a few close calls and once I rearended a friend cause he stopped short (no damage tho). Tell ya what, you learn quick is your driving something that dont stop to well too.

Scuba
03-17-2009, 11:19 AM
Well iirc the lady said she was already stopped at the light...DOH.
Like I said, I was searching for the emergency sirens that were going off..
Although I do need to not follow so closely as I do most of the time (And has changed since the accident)

CJM
03-17-2009, 11:46 AM
Yea, you hit a stopped car..classic not paying attn. People do it all the time, I got hit 2x in my work van and 1x in my T100 that way lol.

Like I said, most of the time I follow 3 car lengths or so and tend to drive the limits-specially in my T100. Work van I dont care ill speed a bit but its not a rush to beat the truck to the next job either.

Biggest thing I learned long ago, dont hit the brakes super early and over and over and over like the idiots who do if the person in front of them does. Let off the gas-then brake a bit if you need to.

As for looking around while driving, well dude thats on you. Work the road ahead like a triangle the way you look. One corner, then center, then other corner then back over and over. If you have tunnel vision thats bad, if your not paying attn even worse.

Not ragging on you, just some friendly advice.

Scuba
03-17-2009, 11:56 AM
See thats the thing, The way my dad has taught me to drive 5speeds..
let off gas, Tap breaks once or twice, when rpm falls under 2K down shift, save breaks, and keeps you from getting too close if you do it well.

And as for the triangle attentiveness, Thats normally what I do, Idk what was up this day, It was just freak, and sucks..

Ill hear from the guy at the collision shop sometime today...

I was in fender bender back about 6 years ago. An ambulance was going through a red light, and somebody several cars in front of me slammed on their breaks. I hit the car in front of me and got hit from behind. The guy behind me got hit from behind as well, and even that guy got tapped from behind. 4 cars total, and the 4th guy took off. So, we had a hit and run 4 car accident caused by an ambulance legally running a red light. Cop was cool and considered it a no fault accident. :D

I can't stand driving behind people who have to ride their brakes like that. Everytime they tap the brakes, there is a split second where I wonder if they are actually slamming on the brakes, or just trying to slow down again. It's really not a safe way to drive and probably increases their chance of getting rear-ended. I try to get around them asap. If I can't go around them, I'll just give a bit more space and feather my gas pedal.

Same here, they drive me nuts!

@Scuba:
Dude whats more $$$ to replace, a clutch/trans or your brakes? I have driven everything you can imagine. Be it a wrecker, flatbed, 18 wheeler, truck, car, dozer, shovel, bobcat, atv. If your driving on the road you can downshift and let off the gas and hit the brakes. If you are gonna stop or slow down alot shift into the proper gear and hit the brakes. Brakes are MUCH cheaper to replace dude...all your doing is wearing out the clutch more.
