View Full Version : Poor Mans Welding Kart

Scuba

Well the Creeper was good for a day and all..So here's my solution, Nothing special, And its a work in progress..

The other day I picked up some 1x2x3/16ths and some 1/4 angle iron just to practice my beads on..
Then I got the Idea to make a welding cart with it...
Heres what im starting with...

Got the main body welded up, my camera sucks and I forgot how much I love welding weird angles.. So no bead pron

http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a168/Sycosurfer150/SDC10682.jpg

Thats it for tonight.

tomorrow Ill have the some angle iron on the sides so its more secure

I need more rectangle stock, And some thinner angle iron, not to mention some thin stuff for a shelf under this thing..

Im thinking itll have 16" legs. Other then that im going with the flow..

Let the comments fly peeps. :wrenchin:

No kidding. Flux core?

Where are the wierd angles? Are you welding in the garage? For the sake of all those involved you may want to move out to the driveway.

haha, Im guessing you 2 dont like...
lolz.

Yes, Flux cored, it came with it so its what im using for now, I know I know, LOTS OF SLAG.

As for the WEIRD angles, Well they arent so much weird, just angles, and they are on the underside on the front mian tube that connects to the 2 tubes going back

Your nozzle angle is wrong and the settings are wrong. I have seen many beautiful welds from that machine. Keep up on the practice.

can't call it a "cart" without wheels. get some cheapo casters from HF and get it rolling. to get a better weld, clean the work piece well first, grind off the iron-oxide first no matter how good a welder you are. don't be shy with a hand wire brush, clean the flux residue after evey pass.

there should be a cheat sheet inside inside the flip door, read it, it couldn't be any easier.

Robinhood4x4

Close off the open ends and grind down all the welds and it'll look a lot better.

turn the heat up, the wire speed down, and slow down your passes. :) I am by no means an expert, but am just learning to weld myself, I am using a Lincoln Electric 110V mig with flux core wire as well....

Umm Kevin, Yea lots O practice is needed...

Thanks for the pointers guys, Ill keep them in mind next time im out there...

Couple more things I learned that helped me a bunch that I'm guessing might help you
keep the wire short, shorting the tip sucks but you want to be as close as you can get
listen for a steady sizzle, if it keeps popping stop & brush the area really well

that's some nice thick metal, good to learn on as you don't have to worry about burning thru. Like Kevin said, turn up the heat & I think you may be moving too fast as well. Have fun!

are you building an elephant cart? those legs are huge. 1.25" squre tubing is like $1.5 a foot, get some and plan ahead, if you want to build a cart, build one can hold the argon bottle, it doesn't need to be tall, 30-36" from ground to the top of the welder is just perfect.

next thing you should think about is building a welding table. this is one i just made over the weekend, all the material were "drop metal" from steel yards, 50 cents a pound. the top is 3/16" 28"L x 24"W, leges are 30" long 0.120 wall 1.5" squre tubing. the tray is a piece of 1/8" thick plate 24"L x 12"W. all these are drop metal, i don't have a choise of cutting them to my prefered size. lightweight caster from HF about $2 each. all together about 30 bucks plus my own labor.

small, simple projects like this will teach you the patiance and skills. remember, measure, re-measure, tack weld, measure again, weld, measure again. make sure every thing is level and squre.

have fun while doing it.

Scuba, get a real extension cord. The one you're using is probably good for 12 amps. Your welder pulls more. You most likely need an 8 or 10 gague cord. You can make one for cheaper than buying one. You're running a big fire/electrical risk using the cord you have pictured.

X2. The SP-135T is a 20 amp welder. It needs to be on a 20 amp circuit, and it needs an extension cord rated for at least 20 amps.
The only thing you have going in your favor at this point is that the welder itself does have an "internal overload safety switch", which I wouldnty really trust though, get the proper gear. :) It'll be better for everyone!

Scuba you need a 12 guage cord, and a 10 guage if your gonna run more than 75 feet. You need a 25 amp circuit, because that welder (set high) will do 25 amps. I would use 1 side of the dryer outlet (if its 50 amps). Also that welder has a 20% duty cycle so keep the welds short.

4x4mike
03-26-2009, 08:24 AM
12g? I thought at least 10. I got the 50 foot 10g cord at home depot for $50.

2ndGen
03-26-2009, 09:27 AM
10ga for 110v. but i would just buy some insulated electrical 10-2 wires from HD and pigtail it to the house panel with a separate breaker, causse the dengerous part is the wire inside the wall, 12ga. thin insulation wire(white plastic) for power outlet, 14ga. for lighting. it's what i did in my garage for the 220v welder. still cheaper than $50 with 20ft of 8ga wire and breaker.

CJM
03-26-2009, 11:03 AM
Yea wiring directly to a breaker box is a smart idea honestly.

If you can just buy the cord and use that to wire it into the box.

4runnerchevy
03-26-2009, 04:45 PM
If you look in the book its 12 ga for 20 amps and is actually good for 25 amps. Hey bigger is better, so use 8 guage if you can afford it.

they also work great as a way to store an engine - makes it easy to move the thing around and it's low enough to the ground that you don't have to worry about it tipping over

btw there was an episode on Discovery Channel's "How it's made" show and it walked through the process of making one of those shopping carts. pretty cool... and damn $$$ too from what the documentary said. def not a cheapie.

I wouldn't steal one. They are nice but if caught you'll be in some trouble.
These are some shoots from when I built a little walk way. I think this was ~1100 pounds. It loaded fine but I could barely move it. I was sweating like a stuck pig by the time I got to the register. I had 3 of these loads before the walk way was finished.

I'm no body builder but I think I'm decent as far as strength. Hell I can ride my bicycle 200 miles in 13 hours. Anyways this pic was from last year so I was 26. To my defense the cart had bum wheels but it's still half a ton. This was the first of 3 trips and they were all really hard to move. Maybe I'm just weak sauce.

CJM

bum wheels are the problem i bet.

That or my awesome leg muscles make you weak sauce. Can you leg press 800lbs? Im only 23 and was 21 or so at the time i pushed a similar cart of crete and blocks.

600 was the warm up
1200 was all they had needed more 100lb plates, took to many 45's

500 on calf machine not enough would require partner to sit on top too.

From the looks of it you already had 2 welders, unless one is a plasma. Should have got a compressor. Even though you'd need a compressor to run the plasma.

The small blue machine is a plasma cutter. I love that little thing, it's a Spectrum Thunder/125. 110v with a built-in compressor. It cuts 1/8" like butter, even tried once on 3/16" but i had to go really really slow. No, I'm not getting a compressor.
