I've got a 97 4Runner with the 3.4L. It has 173k on the clock and is idling high. I've been searching and reading and think that the IAC is the problem. The engine idles at 1500-2000 RPM whenever I start the engine or push the clutch in. If I rev the throttle to 4000 RPM, it will usually go back to normal idle (750 RPM). I have not ever cleaned the throttle body (I've owned it for about 40k miles). The high idle started a couple of weeks ago on a rainy day (though I doubt that has anything to do with it). Does this sound like an IAC problem? At a 173k is it worth it to clean it or should I just replace it? Is there a step by step writeup on how to clean it? I am pretty mechanically challenged when it comes to engines.

Thanks for any help!

Sean, thank you for the offer. I actually got it and the MAF sensor cleaned today at work. It purrs like a kitten now. That throttle body and MAF were dirty! The air box is actually broken (I guess the mounts broke) and let unfiltered air into the MAF. The throttle body had a lot of carbon build up. Now I just have to buy a new air box and a new tie rod end and I should be good for awhile.
