I was just informed in another forum that the 3rd gen 4Runner and Tacoma t-cases are different... given the same engine and same tranny, different t-case??? :headscratch: ???. True or false? I am looking to get a P-brake on my output shaft from Ballistic Fabrication, or All Pro and want to make sure the one they've designed for a Tacoma will work on my '97 4Runner. Cable issues i'm willing to work out, but I'm not looking to reinvent their bracket.

Im not sure about all 3rd gens but Ive heard that the early model 3rd gens, base model/sr5s and some limiteds? (not sure about limiteds) shared the chain driven case with the tacoma. 99-00 sr5s, I think were also in that category

99-00 limiteds and the 01-02 had the push button tcase which is quite different but I dont know the logistics. Maybe if Steve S sees this thread he will give you a bit more of a detailed summary.

Hope that helps a little

As long as it is J-shift there are no differences that I am aware of.

The multi-mode cases available in 99 Limiteds and 2000's came in all 01-02 Runners. Those did not, as far as I know, come in Taco's.

So 01 and 02 would be sure failure.

99 and 00 have a chance.

Not sure what the external differences would be that could impact a brake though. If I am wrong, please report back.

It has been confirmed by Ballistic Fabrication that the Tacoma and 4Runner of the same drivetrain do in fact have the same t-case. Pinion e-brake... here I come!!!! I'll post how I route the cable and any mods I do when I complete it.

By Ballistic Fab?

I thought it was confirmed by the Cheese.

As I said, all J-shifts should be the same.

The only difference in the "J" shifts is the speed sensor, all Taco's have them and only some model 4Runners have them....

Sorry Cheese, no offense intended. I just mentioned BF since they were the ones who were offering the kit and who did all of the RnD. You did in fact confirm first :)

The external difference that would impact a line brake would be the external motor on the back of the transfer case. This thing is pretty big, and gets in the way when trying to hook up the brake actuator.

You can see the motor on the back of the transfer case in this picture:

I haven't even installed my rear axle yet... house have-to projects keep popping up keeping me from wrenching. I'll keep ya posted. i think that case motor is for the electronic actuated 4wd, not the lever on the floor case. I believe they started putting that system in in '00?

I have it in my '99 Multi-matic transfer case.

No worries.

That is the motor that makes them straight shift multimode.

J-shift is straight chain drive.
