From the day that I bought this truck, I have intended on painting the bronze trim to black. Well, I finally got around to doing it!

Here it was in it's virgin state before I got my hands on it...

And here it was w/ the Sequoia Wheels and 255 BFG MT's.

It was OK, but that bronze crap just never looked right.

Getting started with the masking...

Oh yeah...

Ahhhh, Much better!

http://4rnr.net/Black-99/P5010592.jpg

That was Friday night, in the span of about 3-hours total time. I let it bake in the sun all day on Saturday, then I brought it back in the garage, wet-sanded it all back down w/ some 1000-grit, then I shot a very-thin final color coat.

I still have to order some new fender flare gaskets from the dealer. I can't believe how much better it looks as all-black rather than the factory two-tone. It also helps to have that tag surround to be body-matched as well.

That's the way the black 3rd Gen Limited should have come from the factory!

More pics to come of the final product!

Great work Andy!! Out of curiosity, what did you paint it with, were you using auto paint and a spray gun? I would have just rattle canned it, but it never would have looked that good!

Yeah, what did you use? That looks great.

Sherwin Williams single-stage urethane enamel auto paint, used a HPLV gravity fed gun on a small compressor. Shot it at 40 psig with the feed and airflow turned WAY down so that it was almost like a heavy airbrush.

Thanks!

Andy, did you have to take any precautions to keep dust and dirt from falling in your wet paint?

This thread makes me want to paint my 4runner. :D

bamachem
05-03-2009, 09:22 PM
Not really. I sprayed in the garage w/ the door shut USING A RESPIRATOR - don't do it w/o one. With that said, the air is perfectly still, so as long as you are careful, then you're fine. You have to make sure and wipe it down VERY well right before you spray or you'll have dust, etc on the surface as you spray. Urethane enamel dries to a good tack pretty quick, so it's easy to spray it, leave it in the garage overnight, then it's fine the next day. It will still need to cure in the sun a few days before it can even be washed, and it needs to cure at least two weeks before it should be buffed/waxed. It's been very warm down here (mid to upper 80s during the day and upper 60s fo lows, so the temps are perfect. It's warm enough for a quick set, but not so hot to make it miserable.

Looks great Andy! I wish I had that much patience. Hopefully when I go to paint my lower half it will look half as good as yours.

Now get a sport edition hood! Then it will be complete :D

Looks great Andy. Will this one become a black version of the last one you had? ;)

I missed out on a complete sport hood for $200 in craigslist recently. If I get a deal like that, then I probably would.

Man, I sure do miss that red 4runner... :D

This was actually practice. The Land Cruiser is next!

bamachem
05-05-2009, 08:55 AM
The cruiser is also black with gray bumpers, flares, and door trim, so I'll be using the same paint.

I'll have to check the respirator, but it's a charcoal canister type that works really well.

It literally looks 5 million times better. Its a night and day difference. And I agree that is how they should have come from the factory!

Paint turned out great.

BTW bamachem, I've never been a big fan of Sequoia rims on a 3rd gen...but I must say, they look perfect on yours. Almost as if your 4Runner came with them stock.

Again, nice mods all the way around. I look forward to watching what's yet to come. :D

Looks like you just used minimal primer in the low spots, is this paint made to be used without a primer? Did you not use a clear coat? Did you have to thin it it all before shooting? How much is this paint? Have you used it before?

I'll be painting my FJ40 this summer. I can't wait. Probably won't be that clean though...or glossy. :)

I bought the primer from them as well. You don't have to have a primer if you sand the existing paint well and don't have any bare metal or plastic. You have to thin according to the directions with their thinner. You do NOT use a clear coat with single stage colors like white and black. If you have a metallic color, then it's a two stage and typically requires a base coat and clear coat for the best results.

05-16-2009, 05:32 AM
Yeah, it's in other areas as well. I'm just looking to see what interest there is and what the price point will be, but it does look like we'll be selling it in the next month or so to get a Solara for the wife. The upside is that I'll use the $ to pay off the Land Cruiser and drive it. I consider it an upgrade. :D

Rule of thumb I believe is that your tire should double the size of your rim.
So ideally he should run a 36" tire.

Thats how most of us guys and gals tire set up is cool.
15" x 2 = 30
16" x 2 = 32
17" x 2 = 34
18" x 2 = 36

Again sorry for hijack :-P

bamachem
05-18-2009, 06:57 PM
Yeah, but don't forget that the Land Yacht, I mean Cruiser is so dang wide and heavy that it's really not an ideal offroad vehicle anyway. I'll use it mildly, but for the most part, it will be to pull the boat and occasionally go hunting, etc.

Good luck on the sale!

bamachem

yeah. the nutjob thinks that because it has newer tail lights and "mudders" that it can't be in pristine shape and never offroaded.

Someday i'll get 02 tails ;) Have you seen the 20's on the Sequoia Platinum? I thought about running wheel adapters for a few seconds when I saw them....yum!

andy,

quick question re prep: when you are repainting an area (say, a 1/4 panel), how far do you take it down? just the clear coat layer? and then do u spray w/ a primer and then the paint? and is there any visual indicator that tells you that you got all of the clear coat off?

thanks,
bob

bamachem
05-22-2009, 07:23 PM
if you're spraying only a 1/4 panel, then you just barely sand the surface of the entire panel with 400, then sand the repair area as needed with 320 - carefully. Blend in your color over the area you want to repair, then spray clear over the entire panel. That will give you the best results.

Weird... Check this out!

A guy in central FL put a deposit on it today. He's going to deck it out w/ gear and go on a 2-month expedition driving from FL to Argentina and back. Sounds like FUN!

The Red 4Runner got to go live in AZ and get driven on the trails every weekend. This one gets to go on a South American expedition. Maybe one day I'll get to do some of this fun stuff with my trucks WHEN I OWN THEM! Oh well... :D

We picked up the wife's new Solara Convertible today, so the timing is good. I guess now I have the LC to paint and get it taken care of. Nothing like starting with a clean pallet - again.

what brand gun do you have? looking to get one for general use around home... whats the difference between the spray guns with the gravity feed and the ones with the cup on the bottom?

bamachem
05-24-2009, 05:07 AM
I got mine years ago from Harbor Freight of all places. It's a gravity feed, and works very well. I think it was something like $70 or so IIRC. Gravity feeds waste less because they get every drop out of the cup and they don't use as much air since they don't have to siphon the paint up out of the cup. In short, better design.

Here's the one that I have: http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=66222

It's a good gun.

sounds like your 4runner is goin on a very nice trip... did he pay your full asking price?

bamachem
05-25-2009, 06:04 AM
no. there was actually a screwup on eBay. i was asking $9600 or best offer, and i set it up so that anything at $9200 or above would be automatically accepted. i was shocked when i got the email that his offer of $8200 was automatically accepted. we emailed a bit and talked on the phone so that i could explain what happened. we agreed to split the difference at $8700. i got close to i wanted, and a guaranteed sale, so i guess i'm OK with that - especially in the current car market and gas prices on the rise.
