Hey folks,

So every now and then, I'll lose 1st and 2nd gear on my A340 tranny. I pulled the codes from the O/D light, and it looks like I have a bad #1 shift solenoid. Also, my torque converter lockup likes to randomly pop in and out once it gets really warmed up (long trips). So, I've been looking for a solenoid master kit that will let me replace all 3 solenoids.

I found these Toyota part numbers on another forum (although I think these are for a 3rd gen A340--not sure if there is a difference between the 2nd and 3rd gen A340):

No. 1 Sol: 35250-30050
No. 2 Sol: 35250-30070
SL Sol: 35250-50030
SLT Sol: 35290-60020
3 solenoid gaskets: 90301-06004

Does anybody know what the SL and SLT solenoids are? I know one of them is for the torque converter lock up, but I dunno which one. I was under the impression that there were 3 solenoids in these transmissions, so I'm not sure what the 4th part number is for.

It looks like these solenoids will run about $400 from Toyota. I really don't want to put $400 into a transmission with 214k on it. I could buy a used R150 and tcase for that. :D

Does anybody know of any reputable aftermarket solenoid kits for the A340 tranny? I've had bad results with non-OEM parts lately, but I also don't want to dump a lot of $$$ into this tranny. After a quick google search, I've found some kits listed below:

http://www.makcotransmissionparts.com/97420K.html

http://www.transmissionpartsusa.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=940-00094393A&CartID=1

http://www.oregonperformancetransmission.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=OPTI&Product_Code=RST-52-9002&Category_Code=TOY (Poor customer service, from what I hear)

So, has anybody had any experience with these folks? Any other suggestions?

I also found this cool diagram:

Thanks! :D

have a junk yard near you?

Go find a Jeep Cherokee in the same year range as your 4Runner. Look for Low mileage

The trannies are the same. I pulled all the solenoids out of one and tested them with a 18v Dewalt battery. Swapped them out in my 4runner in an hour or so.

Say What?!? :spit: That's very interesting.

I'd been having regular troubles with my solenoids too up until about 3 months ago. It's seemed have fixed itself for the moment :hillbill:

yep they are aisin transmissions in the cherokees

in fact, they like to swap out their valve bodies and use the toyota ones for some reason (I can't remember exactly why)

Reggie, that's a good idea. I knew the transmissions were similar, but I wasn't sure about the solenoids. 4Runners are really hard to find in junkyards around here, but I'm sure I can find some Jeeps.

I found some threads talking about using the A340 bellhousing, Jeep tranny, and a Dana 300 tcase. :D

I also found a website talking about a mod that turns the A340 into a pushbutton "manual". This guy added some buttons on his steering wheel that allowed him to select a higher or lower gear. Kind of a neat idea.

Yeah, I'm looking at getting a rail shifter for mine (that is if I go LT and the 3.0 is still plugging along). I'll have to find the website. It may be the same website and he no longer has the one on his steering wheel as the cord kept getting wrapped up wrong.

Edit: Here it is, he didn't have the "baja shifter" done yet last time I was looking at it. I was looking at his other rail shifter.
