cool cool, nothing wrong with keeping it stock, mine was that way for a year lol!
yeah for now im gonna swap the headunit then do the speakers and maybe a little sub.

what HU do you have now ? Ive got the JBL, works great IMHO, but Id love to get a new HU w/nav and sirius, touch screen, but would rather put that cash towards other things, lol
i have the non jbl...
it's almost a rule with me that i swap out my head unit for one that gives me more options. in the past that was just a headphone jack and data cd readability... since this is a new truck i plan to keep for a long time and want to spoil myself with it, i am going the full gamut!
im getting this one, i posted it in another thread previously too :)

it does... everything you can imagine, including having an sd slot. plus the face is detachable, which was a must since im mostly in the city.

the video quality of the dvd playback is amazing, but i will likely very rarely use it.
the coolest thing so far is that it dims with the headlights turning on, and the gps goes into night time mode when i turn them on too
the gps has the satellites instantly too
anyway so far so good, didnt hook my iphone up yet but the usb cord in the glovebox did pick up my thumb drive.

dare we ask how much this unit was? pretty slick looking.
Does the hu have the ability to transmit your gps to your computer or something via usb?
a bit over 600 shipped  i know im crazy but i wanted an all-in-one. :)
im not sure about the gps to pc thing, but i dont think it does.

That's nice....seems like a good deal too.
Does that model have a rear view camera input or a A/V input/output?
I like it.
a/v in-out yes... not sure on the rear camera although isnt that through the a/v i/o?
i love it so far. it does a good job with sirius reception too for the most part, but i might relocate the antenna to the drivers side since that will see fewer trees and a more consistent clear shot of the sky.

dang that's one $ hu. but then again for what it does that's not a bad deal! :)
want to get me one too :P
yeah it isnt cheap but it debuted at over a grand, most places sell it for about 800-1000, ebay had it for 600 from a reliable seller so i jumped on it.
I'm typically not a JVC fan but if you look around at reviews, it got stellar reviews. I just need to find out how I can lower the amount of time the "warning" at the start shows for before it lets the button become clickable!
so anyone running component speakers in their 4th gen 4r? If so, any recommendations? I've always been partial to Alpine but from what I've read, their quality is going dowwwwn the tubes.
I am not 100% sure I even want to go this route... in my 01 4runner, I did this and found only a marginal gain. I'm thinking I might pick up a 4 channel amp and a powered sub. I haven't found the factory speakers to be lacking in anything except the way they handle bass, and even that isn't so bad. I'd just draw all the bass out to the sub.... and swap speakers out if I found it necessary at that point.
thoughts?
04 Rocko Taco

For my money, I'd get a multi channel amp and sub, and a quality head unit and replace speakers as wanted, or neccesary.
Yeah that's my thought. I figure 4 channel little amp with a powered sub will be a good next move.
I don't like people to hear my bass from 10 blocks away, I really do just want it to make the sound better... I have a basslink I from my 01 4r still, so I'm gonna install that with likely a rockford fosgate amp... not sure, still narrowing that down.

06-23-2009, 05:30 PM
Are you talking about running the amp to the factory speakers?
not entirely sure yet, I don't know what the specs are on the factory speakers. I have done about 10 minutes of actual research but once I decide on what I want, I'll actually take a real look!
Anyone have any recommendations on front rotors?
mine are a smidge warped and I'm thinking of using the opportunity to replace them with good aftermarket ones.
TIA :)

I've never heard anything bad about Brembo. Thier blanks are cheaper than OEM rotors too.

I am a big fan of Frozen rotors. I just put a set on my wife's Carolla S.
yeah i was already leaning toward brembos, but figured i'd ask.
thanks all
ill look into the frozen brand too
ps. the brembo website sucks!
Frozen rotors are quite good but generally they're priced above the Brembo blanks.
Tirerack had decent prices on Brembos last I ordered mine.
i threw this on this morning before it got too hot...

hopefully its higher quality than the one my neighbor had on a 06 trd taco... not sure how, but he broke like half the clips on it so he had to pull it back off after like 2 months... for the record he doesnt go off road at all, just uses it to commute 25 miles to work everyday... they have the suburban for family duties...
Yeah I'm leaving it on for now. I like it more than I did at first so we'll see. Install took about an hr... 20 mins of which was decoding the stupid diagrams
anyone actually buy brembo rotors for their 4th gen?
I am having trouble finding anyone who sells them?? :headscratch:
edit: nevermind, I guess they sell them as "power stop" rotors.
Lee, you said that the HU has a SD card reader ? if so, Im wonering if you can still put the TOPO on a card then load it into the HU.. that would be sweet.. its looking sweet, mines getting to much "rock lovin" :D
yeah it does have the sd card reader but i highly doubt the mapping will do topo. not sure though, i'll take a look around and see if anyone's done that :)
the mapping itself comes on an sd card (goes into a separate map sd slot), it's your standard navteq system very similar to whats in most toyotas from the factory
wow, insert foot in mouth!
i did some quick googling and some folks over on ih8mud who have the same unit (kenwood branded) are loading garmin topo maps via SD...
DHC6twinotter
08-31-2009, 06:35 PM
wow...that would be very cool.
lol no worries Lee, hell when I first heard that you could load the NG TOPO into a stereo, I thought, no way, lol but looked around, and sure enough, :D check out the FJ forums, some really good write ups about it,
Today i spent almost 2 hrs going through the whole truck giving it a good clean up and decided to use the time to go over the frame too.
The rear most parts of the frame had a good amount of surface rust and the drivers side inner frame rail had a few pretty good spots. I wouldn't be surprised if in like 5 years there was a hole or 2 in there if I hadn't gotten to it. People with 4th gens in places that use salt on the roads, please check your inside frame rails!!! The seams in the frame are particular rust magnets.
I took my wire wheel to a couple spots at the back of the frame but it was really weak surface rust so no biggie.
Literally the whole frame and rear axle is entirely coated in gloss black now though, it looks goooood.... I chose gloss black because it's more goopy than regular paint and I found it to stick better when I used it on my 91.
i bought the 1" cornfed leveling kit today.
Even though my tires are brand new, I can't stand them. They're the stock dunflop pieces of crap. So I'm installing the leveling kit and throwing 32" revos on it. That should improve the look and keep me happy on the road for a while. :)

Revos are the best road tire ive ever had on any vehicle... they are awesome wet and dry... not great off the road however (except they do exceptional in the sand at pismo ;))

You can fit 32's in there.
And maybe I missed it, but didn't you have a 91 pick up or something? What happened to that project?
i sold it.
I havent had any time to wheel in ages, and it was just sitting there collecting dust and rust.
I'll get back into the sport eventually but for now I have too much on my plate with a 50 hr work week + 2 grad school classes.
The 32's are going on today :) I went with the Revo 2's.

how are they so far? they look like amazing road tires...
Only put like 3 miles on them so far, so I can't judge, but they ride smoothly and are quiet.
I'll report back with more after a few more miles :)
I did hit the throttle over some wet leaves and it just barely triggered VSC, so the grip is certainly 100x better than those stupid grandtreks.

just think... u are still riding on the protective coating too... just imagine the grip in 100 miles when u wear that stuff off ;)
I have Revos in 265/70/16 variant for some years now. They have been absolutely great with all sorts of weather, heavy rain especially. They've only let me down once when I went frame-rail deep in snow and that was when they were pretty used up.
With 30k on them right now, they are absolutely worn out. However, this probably has something to do with the fact that I ran them at 45PSI all their life.
Looking forward to getting a new set this winter, though I'm not sure what size to go with!
i think mine are overinflated now, but I haven't had a chance to check them yet.
Heard nothing but good about the Revo I's, and these 2's are supposed to be even better...
I'll definitely report back when I hit the snow.
Till then, I am really enjoying them and the look of the 32's.

The store that installed my Revos did the same thing. The store inflated the tires @ 36 pounds. The door plate on my D-cab states 26 pounds. I aired down to 30 and Costco re-inflated with nitrogen.
Crinale
11-06-2009, 02:58 PM
if they are LT-metric tires i dont think they are supposed to have less than 35psi... ever. P-metric however can be at whatever...
Seanz0rz
11-06-2009, 03:03 PM
you can run whatever psi you want in your tire. your door will only be correct for stock size tires.
for me with 285/75r16 tires, i run about 34 psi. the max on the tires is 65. you would never want to run that much in this vehicle, thats for 1 ton pickups. ive found 32-35 psi to be about the sweetspot, at least for my set up in the 4runner.
finally a good quality pic

i used a wire wheel before the winter to get the rusty seams clean and get some of the surface rust off the inner frame rail. this time a little sandpaper, a wash, then wiping it down and repainting with 2 coats of gloss black paint :)
traded in the 06 for an 08

What is there that is electrical in the windshield? Rain sensors for the wipers?
I like those sport edition 4Runners!
nothing, the windshield leak allowed water to seep in via the a pillar and work its way down to the computer near the drives kickpanel.
