so maybe twice a month when i start up my 02 4runner while pulling out of the drive way the power steering does not work.. takes maybe 40 seconds to start work.. any one ever have this problem. I think it did it more when it was cold out.

How does your fluid look?
Might want to check for leaks. How about any noises?
If no leaks you might want to get it flushed.
How many miles on the truck?
I am on my second Power steering pump and my second rack and pinion and I am just now starting to have turning issues again.
Slight hesitation.

no sounds at all.. just no power steering for a few seconds.

Check your power steering belt to make sure it's not loose.

if it is loose, i know the bolts are 14mm.
if you have those nice ratchet wrenches it will make the job so much more easier.

Make sure what kind of fluid (label on cap says power steering, but under it is says AFT only)!! For Tacoma's they call for ATF Fluid!
Dont know if it was a coincidence or not, but after we ran Power steering fluid, the pump wouldnt work in low RPM's, took it apart and it was pretty messed up inside (could be from a newer steering box we put in too...)

It is ATF in the 4Runners as well!

Ditto, definately don't put anything in there but ATF.
If you have, you'll need to do a flush to clean the system.
