View Full Version : Is your Adventure Vehicle a daily driver?

Good Times

I'm curious what kind of membership we have here. I know for the most part many of us drive our junk everywhere but there are a growing number of members who are forced to buy better fuel efficient pos to drive to save money during these trying times. This doesn't mean we're getting rid of the truck but just decommissioned from active duty.

I'll be the first to admit that I really never drove my 4runner daily even from the first day I bought the sucker. But I'm just plain crazy and stupid so I probably don't count. My 4runner isn't a trailer queen so it can still muster the commute but the piss poor fuel efficiency really kills the deal especially when funds are tight. Therefore I get to pimp around in my Honda Accord (yay!)

So tell us your sob story (like I did) in a really short version (hopefully less than 1000 words - haha) on whether your adventure rig is your daily driver or otherwise.

:tongueout:

If your daily driver is a pos commuter car then don't forget to show off your ride here! Pimp daily driver rides! (http://www.ultimateyota.com/index.php?option=com_smf&Itemid=26&topic=285.0) :flipoff:

DD for me. When I still actually went to 'work' everyday, before I got laid off, I was going to get another vehicle for the daily grind. Lay off came to quick, when I do get a DD, it will be an older 2.2L Outback Sport, gotta' have my Subie. :D

mine isnt normanly the daily driver but it is when im working on my car or sand is kicked up by the winds. its nice to not worry about mods and how they will effect your daily drive. also as you mentioned any lengthy drive in a 4runner adds up at the gas pump fast. heres my other cheap as dirt, rice burner with 27 glorious mpg. picture is from veromnt complete with a farm in the background lol

Nice Tib . . . I still have a bit of drool on my chin from the Genesis (http://www.hyundaigenesis.com/coupe/)

I called my 4runner a DD even though it really isn't . . . I do drive it on the weekends wherever I go (gets 20 mpg anyway), but during the week I have a company car to pound pavement with.

No DD here for me. My truck is the one and only. SWMBO got a new car last year, so I gotta wait until I can get a DD replacement for the truck.

I sold my 99 Mazda Protege (which I really liked) when I stopped doing the Ventura to San Diego commuting on weekends. So I do daily drive my 4Runner again but the commute is rediculously short. I think I will just ride my bicycle to work when I fell I don't want to take it or don't want to pay the gas prices again.

THis is a hard decision for me because I just simply like that damned 4Runner so much it is hard not to want to drive it. Ask Marc. I have considered selling it for a newer rig or changing hobbies many times but I can't do it. Our family and friends have had so many good times that are associated with it from the wheelin trips.

My wife still has the Prius so we even out pretty well. Like driving 2 normal MPG cars.

My truck is my daily driver, and thanks to a *insert several profanities* home owners association, the camper is on it as well. Can we all say YAY for 10-12 MPG!!!!!

Anyhoo, it sucks to have to fill up so often, and pay that much. But I ride the bus to work and can walk to and from my bus stop, so it's not absolutely horrid.

Buy a house and let
obama give you $8000 in mod money.

My 4runner and 96 civic took a crapper at the same time this week.

When I first got my truck it was my DD.
Stock and good mileage I didn't have to worry.
But when the mods started.
Then recently my trucks gas mileage has resorted to that of a Hummer...

I picked up my uncles GTI, its not the most desirable model with the 2.slow and an auto trans, but it gets the job done.
However, I have been letting it sit cause it needs a few things fixed here and there and I am thinking of selling it.

I want a 1st gen 4runner, and I want a manual really bad.
I don't care if its the 3.0.

Now maybe if I took moms Lexus off her hand I would be a happy camper...
I got 400 miles to the tank 2 weekends ago, beating the piss out of it...
That's average 22 mpg... And that's mix New york and Highway.
It it was all highway I would have been more.

Alright enough of my violin story.

My truck was my DD up until last Sept. Now I make my 65mi each way commute by motorcycle 55mpg, though I still drive the truck in once sometimes twice a week. The savings at the pump is enough to make the bike payment and insurance.

its not just a daily driver, its my ONLY vehicle. so regardless of what happens on the weekend, come monday, it must be on the road! this keeps the mods to a minimum, staying with the stock 4.10 gears because of the excellent highway mileage for my 80 mile/week highway commute.

i maybe buying a safer, smaller vehicle in the next year or so, depending on what happens with life. but until i start making some serious money, this will be my only vehicle for the next few years. it does daily duty pretty well, gets decent enough gas mileage(15-21), carries everything i need it to, and is decently comfortable. jack of all trades, master of none.

Nope. Have work van I drive alot thanks to working alot-can run all my errands in it really.

Did pick up a free 98 ford taurus that needs brake work and once thats done truck is relegated to less use overall. Basically ever since I had the bad vibration issue I dont want to do anything but leave it near as stock as possible.

My adventure rig is certainly no DD, with no top, no doors, no radio, no heat, no A/C, the list of reasons not to DD this thing goes on and on, not to mention the 5.29's and dual lockers.

I DD the red '04 Double Cab PreRunner, and I bought the little 97 2WD runner as a fun project and possible DD alternative, but the tranny was a little slushy, so it went on its way (much to my profit, I might add) and I keep the Taco around for DD duties, and the '84 is most definitely a trailer queen, she doesnt even have a tag or insurance anymore...

Being as im 19, Dont have money to buy a project Yota to fix up pimp out and beat the piss out of, I am force to mod and drive my only Truck (99 Taco 2.7) and Wheel it (sorta hard) and drive it on a daily basis. Although I dont mind it, It would be nice to have a little commuter..

Not anymore. I am trying to keep the miles off the 4runner as much as possible. But it does require more money to do that :)

Why are you trying to keep the miles off it? Just a value thing? or trying to reduce wear & tear? ...especially if it costs more not to drive it.

Lexus? That is very cool. Slight step up from the Fox I'd say.

Not yet. Will have the runner road ready in about two weeks and then I'll drive it more. Eventually, Mrs. Fuster wnts to drive it as a main vehicle and sell her BMW. I may take those funds to buy a new Tundra...

yeah, the cruiser is the DD, but I split time w/ the wife's 30+ MPG solara convertible. a couple days in the cruiser and the rest in the solara = 20+ MPG average for my commute, which is tolerable.

My 4Runner was my DD for about 6 years...now I use the '04 LC as my DD. I'm actually considering the sale of my 4Runner because it spends so much time sitting around.

4runner is my weekend DD, I walk / take a bus to work. Get funny looks when I have to go to a wedding type occasion in a suit and valet it. I hate valet'ing (sp?) it! Sometimes there's no choice.

I tried to limit my 4Runner's modifications to things I actually NEEDED so it could serve as my adventure vehicle and as a DD. Even with the lift I can still get 20 mpg+ on the highway and it is still a really nice vehicle to drive on a long trip. It's still comfortable and quiet and I would rather drive it on a long highway trip than many of the sedans my friends own. And of course it takes me everywhere I need to go offroad.

I am really surprised at how close this poll has remained. I would have thought the Adventure Rig/DD's were an overwhelming force.

It would be hard to see with a poll, but I would also like to know of those of you that your "rig" is NOT your DD, do you trailer to trails? Or do you still drive it, just not everyday?

In fact here is a new poll for that purpose... http://www.ultimateyota.com/index.php?option=com_smf&Itemid=26&topic=7946.new

Added a no to the poll so I can vote in the trailer queen poll.

My rig (93 4 runner) was my daily driver up to about 3 years ago, now it’s a 2000 Subaru Outback. The Outback does double duty as a mild adventure vehicle and the 4runner is the backup daily driver. Works out well for me that way, here are some advantages.
• Keeps mileage low and tire tread high
• Higher gas mileage, lower gas $$$
• Backup vehicle when one of the daily drivers is down
• Allows for less stressful modification schedule
• Can start loading long before the trip
• Don’t have to worry about people stealing lights and such if you park in less desirable areas
• Don’t have to worry about low clearance garages
• It’s always glad to see you when you get home

i just voted yes.. currently the 12mpg wonder-runner is my DD. I may be rockin a '95 Lumina soon though (its my gf's old car, but her parents are borrowing it right now)... gets 20mpg on a bad day, and cruises nice and quiet on the highway...

i drive my 02 more than the 07 for multiple reasons, but mostly because people are just assholes when your in a nice truck like the 07 is. when i barrel down the road in my 02 thats all scratched and dented and makes funny noises with the large black bumper and funny speaker thing coming out the side of my fender, MOST people tend to not be dicks... save for that one special person who doesnt understand how to drive
