I'm not sure how to tell if I'm on the verge of needing a new clutch. It doesn't show signs of grinding or clammering it just kinda sloppy feeling at the foot pedel. I have smoked my clutch a couple of times since I've owned it (bought new in 2000). I was shocked at how much Toyata want for a new clutch, $1155.00.....ouch. Is there an upgrade to factory clutch more for offroading than the TRD one?

Is it slipping? put it in 3rd, 4th or 5th with your foot on the brakes and let the clutch out, does it slip or does the engine stall immediately?
Marlin gets decent reviews for clutch replacement, but I've always gone with Centerforce and never been disappointed. Most every clutch you buy (regardless of the packaging) is going to be made by 1 of 3 companies: Exedy, Valeo, or Sachs.

Thanks corax! This is helpful.
If you're in gear and giving it gas and your RPMs are going up but no forward progress, good sign your clutch is slipping.

Go with a Centerforce and make sure you replace the pressure plate.. Its not hard to do yourself if your mechanically inclined

I've always has GREAT luck with Marlin clutches. I've also had great luck with Excedy clutches, I can't speak for who actually makes Marlin's clutches, but both of those are viable options as far as I'm concerned.

I usually pop the clutch in 3nd gear and see if the engine tries to jerk you forward or dies (the engine should die if done from idle). If you slowly get up to speed, the clutch needs to be replaced because it is definately slipping. You can also do this from 2nd gear but again you should feel the vehicle lurch forward when the clutch is in good condition.
