Need a bit of help. It has 25 years or more since I have went fishing. Any tackle I had is long gone. This weekend I have been invited along with my son to join some other guys on a small private lake for some camping, fishing, and other activities. My question here is what type & size hooks do I need to pick up for small fish? I cannot imagine anything in the lake being any bigger than 5lbs if that much. In all honesty I have no idea what is in the lake so I am thinking a hook that can cover a range of fish sizes. I managed to pick up a combo pole earlier today but didn't have much time to look over the hooks, sinkers, bait, and whatnot. What is best to use artificial bait or live? When I was younger all I used was artificial and I didn't catch too much. I will have a little time to pick up a few things tomorrow before we head out so I was hoping to get some ideas from you guys. So far my web searches have turned up very little useful info. I hate to sound like a newb on this but in a sense I guess I am. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

We really need to know what kind of fish you are after. Trout, bass, catfish, ect. What is the elevation of the lake? What are some well known lakes nearby that will have the same kind of fish?

What kind of combo pole did you get?

I honestly always had the best luck using powerbait grubs with some medium hooks. Used to catch TONS of fish with just that simple setup.

What walmart or kmart has should suffice tbh.

If you are wanting a simple set up go with some small pan-fish hooks, split shot weights, a few floats, and some worms or minnows. That should catch a variety of fish. Rooster Tail or Beetle spinners will also work with a wide variety of fish. Between the two of those options you should have a good weekend at the lake.
