Rocko Taco's Operation Rebuild.
This is sure to not be as full fledged, or as complicated, and hopefully not as longstanding of a project as our beloved Lance's "Operation Rebuild: Chaos Edition" but I thought I would let you guys in on the deal anyway.

On Friday 9/4/09 (just for reference) I was headed to SETO (Southeast Toyota Takeover) which is a TTORA event for all the southeast chapters, it was being held in Tracy City, TN. On I-75 North about an hour from home, I was just about run off the road in my Tacoma, when you have a trailer and your 4runner behind a Tacoma, you can guess this is no fun. One thing lead to another, and suffice to say me and the Taco are lucky to have escaped unscathed. The trailer and the 4runner, unfortunately, did not fare so well. My trailer is a complete loss, with the frame twisted, bent, cracked, and the axles broken. The 4runner isn't in quite as sorry of shape, but isn't pretty. I'll let the pictures do the talking with as little interruption as possible.

Here she is, moments after the trailer has been towed away, waiting for the second two truck to arrive.(you get a lot of funny looks towing this thing around, you get a lot of even funnier looks when you flip one and stand on the side of the road)

http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k112/04RockoTaco/Tracy/DSCF2201.jpg

Here she is at Mossyrocks Fab shop (praise Mossyrocks for the cage, which was my '84's only saving grace)

http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k112/04RockoTaco/Tracy/DSCF2380.jpg

We spent a little time mulling over exactly what to do first, and decided to keep the top, and pull it back as straight as possible, repair the cage, and I opted for the idea of a Plexiglas (or Lexan) windshield. SO we spent some time with the forklift and a lot of strapping (notice the lift is a Yota too, one 20R helping out a little 22R - so sweet)

http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k112/04RockoTaco/Tracy/DSCF2387.jpg

After Phase 1 (body movement) was completed, this is how she stands. Much straighter and "square-ish" than she was...

http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k112/04RockoTaco/Tracy/DSCF2397.jpg

Phase 2 will be coming soon, I do have the Hallo-wheeling trip to attend. Windshield or no, repairs will be made to the cage, and we'll be rocking and (hopefully no more) rolling. Keep checking back, it should be fun to see, and I even may get into a body swap if my source comes through with a new tub. Thanks for looking!

OMG! That totally sucks!

How did it happen, more details!

Tractor trailer drifted into my lane and ran me off the road, I honked, and swerved, and that was the beginning of the end, the trailer started fishtailing, and never recovered, spun me around in the middle of the interstate, and the trailer flipped, 4runner included, after it broke off the hitch, and luckily left me and the tacoma right side up in the middle of the interstate, albeit facing the wrong way.

you tryin to one up me? hahahaha

welp hopefully the rebuild won't take almost a year like mine! looks like some serious carnage and it's always good to hear everyone's safe. I'm curious as to what the trailer looked like after it got all twisted!

so what's the new plans for this truck? exo? c'mon just spill it all out! we know you want to!

Repair of the exisitng cage, and finishing it off to the back, and then... who knows... time to start cutting, I imagine... Truggy, here I come.

Did they catch the driver of the tractor trailer? That must of been crazy for both you and the folks behind you.

Tractor Trailer did not stop, he didn't actually contact me, so its not really his fault anyway - I mean, it sucks, but oh well.

I screamed an expletive and tucked into a ball...the rest was physics.

The real story is that I was riding my racing bike in the canyons of Utah. While on my way down a semi with two trailers crossed the line around a corner and clipped my left shoulder. I was thrown into a gravel turnout having been accelerated from 30 to about 50 mph.

When I regained my senses I assessed the damage. My Alfa team jersey was shredded at the right shoulder blade, my bike was tweeked, my left shoe was broken in half and I had a revealing tear longitudinally from my waist line over my bloodied right buttock to my hammy.

The trucker never stopped, but I did get an empathetic lift home in the back of a pickup. Though still a single man in my twenties, I did manage some skilled young female attention to my posterior injuries. It was almost worth the pain. :hillbill:

Not the worst car vs. bike collision I survived anyway...

Chop and then body swap? Kinda sounds counter productive. I got an 85 4Runner cab with windshield complete back to behind the rear fenders. Firewall already tubbed and rear fenders tubbed too if you are interested. It is just sitting there.

:D

thats basically what I am looking at, we are gonna chop the cage out and swap on an 85 body that is bobbed 14" and fenderwels all tubbed. then put the cage back. (amd finish it off to the back of the truck.

and please tell me the roll bar is not staying

04 Rocko Taco
11-05-2009, 02:34 PM
THAT roll bar won't be staying, it has some weird square tube welded to it, and it is split at the bottom of one of the mounts. My roll bar may or may not go back in. Mossyrocks has once again been tapped to do some cage repair and rebuilding, and I am going to have him finish the cage all the way to the back, but for the $$ I want to spend, it may end up being tube to the roll bar, I don't know yet.

Since he's going to have to (at the very least) replace the drivers door pipe, he might as well replace the adjoining stressed pipes, well, then might as well as having to go that far replace all of it and scrap the rest, or make some sort of trinket or toy out of the old stuff, right?

After an AGONIZING couple of hours to get the body and the frame into the shop (by hand, no equipment) my labor was.... well, see for yourself.

Still PLENTY to do. The easy part is all done. But now comes the wholesale swapping of wiring harnesses and hooking up fuel lines, and brake lines, and all that jazz, getting everything re-electrified, bled, and running.... might take awhile.

Here are couple of shots of bringing it (and the old front end - wiring, etc.) home on the trailer.

Donating guts to New Body...

I'll try to keep this updated as we go along. Tough part is a lot of the routing of wires/ hard lines, etc is different between 84 and 85. (old was 84, new is 85) plus this was originally an EFI truck, which is why I have to swap out the harnesses.

Okay, need some help here (Jenn). Where does this hose go?
It's along the firewall in the back of the engine bay, it comes from the brake booster and has a white fitting in the center of the firewall underneath the VIN plate. I need to know where the other end of that hose goes...

See in picture below.

Okay, I got that one figured out....

I MAY still need some help with a couple of fuel lines along the passenger side fenderwell/firewall.

I got a question for you, are you gonna go ahead and run an exo this time or not?

Negative. :)

Same cage going back in plus a lot of structural support and completing the cage the way it was planned but, obviously, never finished. then.... bang it up. :)

AS it stands currently it is 100% wired (unless I missed something) and needs the battery, and radiator reinstalled, and it will be ready to start tomorrow.

I'll get pics up and all that crap after it runs. :) Until then, no stopping.

Marlin's stuff finally got here! She runs, she stops! She has a battery draining short somewhere, but for now, I am going to install battery disconnect and call it done.
Got a few details to work out inside, but she is basically ready for the trails.

And for you fellow Southeasterners (or for those who love to travel - and would like to congratulate me in person) here is a list of events I plan on being at this year.

Spring Crawl @ River Rock ORV - Millidgeville, Ga May 21-23

GSMTR (Great Smoky Mountain Toyota Rally) Golden Mtn ORV - Sparta, TN June 7-13

SETO (Southeast Toyota TakeOver) Monteagle ORV - Tracy City, TN Sept 3-6

SE4RJ (Southeast 4Runner Jamboree) Golden Mtn ORV - Sparta, TN Nov 4-7

Thanks z0rz! lol. I got the blower motor operating again today. I found and fixed the short that was draining the battery, got the radio wired up, and got the Sr5 gauge swapped over complete with working tach. :)

Gonna try to get to TN this next weekend to help Brad and the rest of the mossyrocks crew get the cage in and finished up, just in time for Spring Crawl at RiverRock. :)

Congrats on getting her back together. :D

What did the short that was draining the battery end up being?

When I swapped the harness the only piece I didn't swap was the fusebox/headlight harness (it only runs between the headlights across the front of the truck) I began to consider that there may have been a subtle difference in pin outs of the connectors from 84 to 85, and I looked closely, the fusebox was wired differently. I swapped in the fusebox and headlight harness from the '84 and once it was the entire 84 harness again, no more short. :) Guess it didn't like being pieced apart.
