How is the mileage stored in the digital clusters? Is it in the gauge cluster itself, or in the computer?

My brother is looking at a 97 runner, which has 115k, according to the owner, but is halfway through a 99 interior conversion, and we were looking for away to verify the mileage, if anyone knows. The gauge cluster may or may not be the original.

I believe the mileage is stored in the computer, but don't hold me too it.

However, there is no possible way to convert the 97 cluster to a 99 or the other way around, I have tried, even simply going to a 98. They never had the electronic mileage in 96 & 97 so I don't know how it would even work trying to put in a 99+....

So unless the owner switched it out for another 97 cluster, you should be good.

Hope that helped...

Oh...Well in that case, we have an issue. bummer.

The truck has a digital gauge cluster in it right now. Not cool.

i know for sure on my truck (99 sr5) the digital odometer is stored on the circuit plate #3 which is on the cluster.. i have an issue with my gas guage reading inaccurate so the fix is to change a few things out, including that circuit board, which has to be ordered from toyota and mileage verified. $500 fix.

so its a 97 with a 99 cluster in it?
I am surprised the thing is not throwing codes or going all out of wack,
apparently one kid over on YT did it and he said his dash lit up like a christmas tree and none of the gauges would work....

Thanks dudes. Decided against getting the truck on account of the weirdness listed here. Not looking to have a bunch of issues and an xmas tree.

Nope prob.

I am interested to know what the guy is trying to achieve,
sounds like he is just taking a 97 and trying to make it look fully like a 99

The 99 interior is much nicer inside, so I imagine that was what he was going for.
