View Full Version : Time for a new muffler for my 2002 4Runner

My current stock one isn't in such great shape, so I thought it's time to replace the muffler.
This area isn't a big priority for me, so I don't need the greatest/fanciest one out there. Up until now, I haven't given my trucks exhaust a second thought. Although I'm not looking to spend a whole lot on it, I wouldn't be against one that performs a bit better than stock.
What do you guys recommend?

I just bought a Flowmaster 50 Series SUV Performance Mufflers last week. I'll tell you how it is after I get a chance to install it.
I'm hoping it's not stupidly loud. Really don't care on the performance side since I'm not racing but rather got it cuz it was cheap and small enough that it wouldn't get eaten alive by the rocks :)

i've got the vortex cherrybomb, nice modest growl to it. thinking of changing to a magnaflow or flowmaster in a little while

why not replace with a stock one?

in that case you don't need a board like this, just go to a local muffler shop and tell them what you want, chances are you'll leave with what you need

That's what I'm thinking. I've never heard a 3.4 with aftermarket exhaust that I thought was worth paying for. YMMV and a stock replacement might be the cheapest route.
Put a T100 stock muffler on it, its a bit different but might fit. It sounds way better overall. Comparing my truck (totally stock ) to YotaFuns with TRD it was actually sad his TRD didnt sound as nice.
Has a nice throaty sound to it but not over the top at all.

When I first installed my TRD, it was alright, actually compared the sound to my friends 40 series flowmaster on his 2nd gen.
However ever since I dented the cat-back portion of the exhaust it sounds a little meh, and I think its time to replace the system again.
I am thinking of finding a T100, just like CJM said, his has a nice tone too it, Don't know why his is different for a stock 3.4 muffler but it is still nice.

I need to talk to my neighbor as he has the only 3.4 exhaust that I like better than stock. It's probably a TRD, but I will find out as it sounds really good.

Found some videos I took for someone else that was looking for a performance exhaust at the time.
The first on makes the exhaust sound like a ricer... really doesn't..

These second two are what it sounded like when I first put it on, wow I forgot how nice it sounded, and damn I forgot how nice the truck looked before I really started to take it off-road...

chuck,
i had the magnaflow, didn't like it b/c of the highway drone. dont recommend it. also, i lost a little low end torque and that wasn't good for me.
i went back to stock :)

stock—yeah, that might be my best bet.
i guess i was wondering if there was one that sounded like stock...but gave some extra oomph.
now to look out for a stock one.

if you want more off the line oompf, get something a tad bit more restrictive. if you want more HP and better throttle response on the freeway, go with a less restrictive design. but having done the later for over a year with a magnaflow, i much preferred the former :)

Bought a Walker QuiteFlow a few years back. Supposedly gives a bit more flow through, but doesnt increase sound. I had about 3 or 4 aftermarket mufflers over the years and this one is by far my favorite. The loud exhaust gets old after a while.

I'm with you on that one. I too want to upgrade my muffler, but I'd prefer an exhaust note that sounds similar to my stock one (don't care for loud exhausts any more.) So I guess it's back stock for me too. Let me know if you end up going w/ something other than stock.
Casey, how much was your Walker & where did you get it from? Thanks! My NYC mechanic says they're all he uses for OEM replacements.

Nick,
Unfortunately, I cannot remember where I bought it from exactly. Online somewhere thats for sure. And as I recall it was a bit more pricey than your typical flowmaster or magnaflow etc. but roughly the same size as most and much smaller than a stocker. I want to say I paid around $150, but very possibly more. Either way, a great option for those who are sick of a louder exhaust as I was.

Just run open exhaust and have a shop fab up some diesel smoke stacks. You would then be so cool.
