Welcome to UY!

I only changed the fuel filter on my 1992 4Runner once, and it was kind of a PITA because the filter is right next to the framerail and there are some other fuel lines and stuff right there that get in the way. Just make sure you have some wrenches that can fit in there, and unbolting the fuel filter bracket from the framerail will help.

... and getting gas all over yourself is par for the course in changing a fuel filter.

Undo the gas cap prior, that helps a little.

I don't know, I didn't have that much trouble with it. Maybe because I can get my hands into tight places. Just wear eye protection when you crack the lines open and have a container to catch the gas. It wasn't too messy for me and didn't have that much gas come out.
