View Full Version : Recommendations on shocks for lifted 3rd Gen 4Runner

Here is the scoop,
I think I have a blown front left shock.
My reasoning behind this is a few symptoms:
1) Driving I notice that when I make right turns I roll extremely to the left, as apposed to when I make a left turn, the truck does not roll as much to the right.
2) When braking, and I hit a bump the ABS goes insane, it was like this when I had the 32s and is still persistent with the 33s...
3) While off-roading this weekend, I noticed that the front left tire kept hitting the fender well, either over a simple obstetrical, regular trails, or little jumps.
Today I parked on a flat surface and noticed the truck leaning to the left....
So in conclusion I feel its time to replace the front shocks...
I have the Tundra Coils up front and the LC coils in the rear.
I would like to replace all 4 just for the sake that I am slightly OCD and I would like all to have the same mileage on them
Does anyone have any recommendation on a shock to use besides the Tocikco offered with the lift?
Anything they may prefer more?
Worse comes to worse I will go back with the Tocikco's, but I know Steve is now offering Bilstines for the same lift.
Any input, along with prices would be appreciated, I have looked but only can find stuff from like skyjacker, rough country, or fabtech...
Thanks in advance.

Sean, I know you had the Green Tockio's before, but how would you compare the ride quality from them to the new bilstein's you have?
How much was the cost on the Bilstein's if you don't mind me asking?
Steve, are you running OME now?
I didn't think I could get a shock from them that would work on I guess a stock height Tundra coil?
Do you like the OME shocks?
Ride Quality?
How much did the ones you get run you?

night and day difference between the green tokico trekmasters and the 5125's.
fronts were 250 for the pair. in the rear im still running the black stock tokicos from a lc(or whatever was included in steve's kit)
for the front buy them for a tundra. hopefully someone can help you with the rear model numbers.

Steve, are you running OME now? Yes, 881 Coils and N91S Shocks
I didn't think I could get a shock from them that would work on I guess a stock height Tundra coil? My guess is you could, Im guessing those coils are something like an 882 height wise
Do you like the OME shocks? Love them, Firm but plush ride
Ride Quality?See above, But to add. Without a front swaybar on my taco, Body roll sucked, then I got the OME stuff and the difference was amazing
How much did the ones you get run you? Cant remember exactly how much the shocks were because they were on sale, But TRDParts4U has them for 215.

PS, The OME front shocks are extended length, Im sure you can run them with a tundy coil

running OME front shocks with the tundras will result in too much droop and cv failure. (at least what ive read)

I will research that to verify Sean, also, aren't your new shocks some how adjusible?

yes they have 1/2" increment slots to adjust the preload(or something) on the springs. i have it set up for 2.5 inches of lift. the wonderful thing about this is it doesnt require a top out spacer and at full droop the cv's arent in danger.

OME are "extended length" but they will droop to the same level regardless of spring. now if the tundra coil provides too much lift on the OME Strut.. thats is another question. i wouldnt think so though since i think tundra coils provide 2.5" lift on tokyo (stock) struts.
the extra length gives me a little more articulation that i like. i have no idea how they compare against the bilstins. the beginning of this video shows the full range of motion with OME without top out spacers. its more then stock but not terrible IMO

avy,
isnt there some warranty left on the shocks?

I don't think so, they have about 30k on them and about 3-4 wheeling trips too, and I have had the lift for a little over a year now so....
I originally said to myself that when these shocks go I would get some adjustinle coilovers like sway-a-ways or something but j just don't have that kind of money to drop, and I need the truck ready by the end of the month... :-(

You might like to consider the Blue TRD Tokicos..

See, for the trails I hit, the blue Tokico's wouldn't really be for me.
Unless I start finding more places to get the truck airborn lol!!!
I think that's how I initially blew these...
There are a few roads around me that I sometimes forget have a spot when I can launch the truck, and once I get to it it's like "oops too late"
but I think what finally did it in was the mini jumps at the abandon highway up in Centralia PA, I heard my left front bottom out pretty good and the nice hope starting to grow in the rear...
bilsteins, no question. 5125's, the new ones that steve uses in his kit.
I second this notion. They are absolutely excellent shocks.

You bought a lift kit from me, I will sell you just the shocks. They are not cheap. The green shocks have a lifetime warranty, the black shocks 1 year and the 5125: 90 days.

I am on hold now, might have some adjustinle coilovers in the works.
Right now I have to rebuild the rear lower links and redo my rear axle.

I have the rubicon express lower links in the rear with the same joints you used to build our upper.
If I wasn't such a dumb @$$, and remebered to lube the joints every oil change I would have been good.
But now there is half of the ball left and they clunk when I go into gear or hit the gas.
Also discovered, while the truck was in the shop that the place where the top of the rear shocks bolt in has rusted out and now the shocks bang everywhere so I have to fix that.
As for the rear axle, I kinda half @$$ed the e-locker swap and now have studs starting to come lose and the cut for the clearence is not quite right cause I forgot the template at home an hour away from the shop.
I would have gone home to get it bu at that point the truck was apart along with the other 4wds in the shop and an ice storm started, and I didn't want to drive 2 hours in a BMW m3 to get them.
So while it's out I need new rear brakes, shoes, drums, springs and wheel cylinders cause the shop that put this axle in from the accident stink major @$$ and gave me a bum axle.
So I am pickin up another cheap and reinfocin it and cleanig it up so all j have to do is put the 3rd in and hook everything up and go.
Then with my old axle I am going to fix it right and hand it over to whoever needs it for the swap.

I have Extended Coilovers and Upper Control Arms on the way for the front now but thanks for the info guys.
I might put the bilstiens up front on stepdads truck when i get him his new suspension.
I will def be putting them in the rear since my rear seems way to spongy right now.
I love how if I am goingbackwards and hit the brakes the truck dips about 3 inches...
