Someone please tell me they went and got some coverage this year because anything has to be better looking than this monstrosity..

Scuba, I am sorry to have ever said "Speed Boat Metal Flake" and "Forest Service Green" in the same sentence. This has to be the worst case of cosmic intervention EVAR!

 I think there are more "Talent Shots" this year than the last few, too bad because it then becomes an indication of the poor vehicle turnout and the photog's need to actually "Get Coverage". I'm waiting for a buddy to get back Monday from his detour over to SNT to see what he's got.

Look at how they hinged the doors, using something modeled after a Nissan XTerra roof system, can you say "FAIL, complete and utter FAIL."?

Some ideas and things are best left on paper, so the janitor can take them out. Maybe there's turbo thrusters hidden under the tonneau cover? :spit:

I always did like WD-40, wonder if there's a Spot-Shot one also?

some nice looking cars in there... but kinda disappointing for SEMA... looks like this year was an all out aftermarket competition to see who could build the best camaro, challenger, and mustang...

i must admit, after looking through all 420 pictures i was getting really tired of seeing all the "new muscle" cars...

That right there is part of my disappointment in this year's show. Way to do two things..show support for the "Home Team" and way to piss off companies who import. Come on now sinking tons of money into marketing your top line sports cars is not going to help us believe in you more. Fix your expenditures and make cars Americans will buy. Throwing money around isn't always the solution and of course the fact the whole show was "Sponsored by Ford" mirrors this fact.

But, of course that subject is best left to a political thread.

HUH?

How about you learn to do quotes and learn to clarify what you meant in reply please. My post set is following the logic that this years coverage sucks, it's mostly "Talent" shots and that I would hope someone can offer up some good coverage if there was any Toyota, Lexus, or Scion vehicles. Related to that is the fact the event was sponsored in full by an American manufacturer who should like the other two American manufacturers, spend their, or rather our money better.

I hope you meant something different but if not I'm happy to spoon feed it to you. If you aren't part of the initial conversation, but then choose to throw out a bullshit comment mid span, maybe just shut up and don't chime in?

Wasn't Ford the ONLY one to NOT take a .gov handout and in the end they have now turned a profit?

Obi..

Yes, but they in turn are receiving a funding reimbursement for the event as it was a "Cross promotional event" in that they also supported GM and Chrysler.

It's like volunteering and still taking the write-off, get it?

now that is really interesting. if they pull off these low number custom built cars at the 50k range they are aiming for then its really going to change things. imagine a low number offroad truck stripped of amenatiys? rich guys would line up for that too im sure. brilliant motor choice too!

definately has that look, though the direct lineage is from the KTM X-Bow (this company has really impressed me in the last 2 years - from being known primarily for their dirt bikes to breaking out with MotoGP, then an open wheel racer in such a short time) - though the Rally Fighter is now on my desktop because it has the distinct advantage of being daily-drivable

I like how the rally fighter has seating for 4 or more room for gear with 2 people. You could drive on and off road, as in, I could drive this out to Barstow and have a blast, and then drive it into Vegas and then back home. :)

Crinale
11-13-2009, 05:09 PM
ya, that is very true... it is distinct in that you could drive it everywhere... although, id bet if you gave any of us $50k we could all build a truck at least as capable, at least as durable, and probably have money left over... although we dont all have access to a BMW diesel motor...

slosurfer
11-13-2009, 05:17 PM
Kevin, I agree, although, I think for any of us to pull that off for under 50K, we would have to use an existing body. I doubt we could build one with a one off working body, hood, doors, and windows for that much.

troyboy162
11-13-2009, 05:50 PM
yeah 50k is cheap for all that. you either invest in expensive specialized machinery and make tons to get your money invested back or you do expensive custom work and charge out the yang for it. somehow these guys think they can do custom on the cheap. its going to be really cool to watch. i want them to hit there 50k mark, but i bet they will be closer to 100k with the volume they will likely get. i watched a lot of there videos and they really want to turn the auto industry upside down and have a plan to do it. if that sells for 50k then they've done it

Obi..
11-13-2009, 06:40 PM
:) All I can say about the KTM and Rally Fighter is it strikes me as their bringing RC Car conceptual design to full scale, and in these cases, so worth it! :D Way to spin the industry on their backs and strike out with something potentially great.

Oh, almost forgot, got to play with a hopped up Tesla today..I'll get a shot of the little sport shop later on, looks like they've some sweet tricks up their sleeve also.

Crinale
11-13-2009, 11:52 PM
i definitely respect what Local Motors is trying to do... and the guys in charge are definitely smart... the 2 founders met at school in Boston... which means they either were probably at Harvard, or MIT... (and one of the founders went for his doctorate at Harvard)

So it sounds like they may be able to pull it off... only time will tell i guess..

Crinale
11-14-2009, 12:12 AM
@ Chris - they arent doing one-off bodies for every vehicle (because ur right, im sure they couldnt do that for <$50k)... what it is is called "open source design" which essentially means they hold competitions with certain criteria, and have designers from all over the world enter their designs, and the winning design becomes one of their models... the guy who designed the Rally Fighter is in this video...

here is their SEMA video... Local Motors releases "A Car Story" Part 4 - The Rally Fighter takes SEMA. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=202ZHBOic9w&feature=sub#ws)

slosurfer
11-14-2009, 08:15 AM
Yeah, I know they aren't doing one off bodies, I meant that if you and I did it, it would all be "one off" and therefore expensive and impossible to do for less than 50K.

Since they are doing more of them they may be able to hit the 50K mark. Sounds expensive, but is pretty close to a fully loaded fullsize double cab truck, so not unattainable.
