With the holidays coming up, what's everyone doing? Anything new in your lives?

Sorry for the random post, just a bit on the bored side.

We are short 2 people at work, so I'm pulling extra hours.

My dad is having his 70th b-day party in a month, so we are starting to do some prep stuff for it.

Just bought the new Mario game for the Wii...it looks pretty fantastic.

I need to do a brake job on my 4Runner soon.

I dug my Legos out from under the house, and I'm currently trying to build a Lego Technic model of the Grumman Avenger. The 16 cylinder radial engine and electric variable pitch prop is just about done, but I'm having a hard time with the pneumatic wing fold mechanism. :hillbill:

Otherwise, nothing exciting going on here. :D

today i spent most of the day in the junkyards looking for various parts for various cars. only came out with an ac compressor for the g/f's car. hers siezed and caught fire last week.

trying to find ways to make money and trying to sell some stuff. going to have a pretty large medical bill as soon as i can get the money to pay in advance for it. sucks when insurance doesnt cover stuff that you really really want but dont "need" at least according to them.

planning for the holidays, trying to get x-mas cards out soon. holidays are a weird time for my g/f and i. she hasnt celebrated anything in a very long time, so its kind of difficult to get her to be as enthusiastic about it all as i am.

for my b-day i bought myself a present for the truck, there will be a full writeup on that in a couple of weeks when i get a few dry days to work on it. still have rear bumper fab stuff to work on, and i am planning my tail light mods soon.

I just installed a locker in the front of my 86 4runner today only to find out my 7.5" ring gear is chipping/cracking. I'm looking for a new one, but wondering if I should keep running it till it breaks.

Tomorrow I'm trying an idea I've had for the last few months. There's a nice offroading area 10 miles by my house that defies the fact that southern california doesn't have mud. The last time it rained I headed out there and winched 6 trucks out of the mud. It occurred to me that everyone who got stuck HAD to get home to a mad wife/mother, so I've decided to go out there on rainy days to winch people out for a small fee. Mostly to pay for a new synthetic winch cable, but if I make more I'll buy other parts for the 4runner. Plus I get to go mudding in the process!

Hair looks good Scuba.

My 8 month old is crawling and getting into everything so we're thinking about some child proofing. The obvious stuff is moved but we don't really let her out of our site so things have been well so far. It's her first Christmas and since she crawls we can't get a large tree like we have in the past. We ended up getting a little 3 footer that we'll put up on a table. Out of her reach but visible.
Trying to find time to swap my e locker axle into the 4runner as I'm done building that up. For the most part all of the parts are here and modded. This week I should get my new Micro DE's to replace the factory lights. I've had a DDM HID kit sitting on my work bench for 2 weeks now waiting to go in them.

It was funny. Yesterday I pull up to work (I work on Camp Pendleton) and there's a couple SOI/MCT kids standing outside near the door. They must have seen the blue sticker on the winshield (Mom's retired) because one of them gave me a real serious salute. Like uhh A. Im not in uniform, B. You dont know I'm the one that earned that sticker... It was just funny.

But yeah it was about time to cut that ish

EDIT: Thanks mike :)

Busy with school and work.
Just made a deal on some All-Pro Upper Control Arms and Extended Adjustable Coilovers for the 4Runner, (little Christmas present to myself since I am paying the guy in weekly payments.....smart move....)
Also just got a Denso 02 sensor to hopefully solve my 10 mpg issue that I am having...

Got my Put Put GTI DD back on the road, still needs a cat, but looking at getting a spacer for the o2 sensor, found out that there was a recall, but VW would need it all day and since I have already done other work to it, they might not do it...

Hood and lights came for my moms Lexus finally (need to replace from the deer damage in 2005), so I have to get some paint for the underside and the clips for the heat shield for it, and install it, probably be a partial xmas present for her.

Our new dog is doing well, no signs of cancer coming back from when he went to have a lump removed from his lip a few months ago.

Going to be talking to the snap on guy about opening an account and getting a box and start something small and then start looking for a job in a tire shop or something to get me into the field...

8 more months and I am finally out of school.....

Trying to get my 11 month old daughter to learn to calm down so she is easier to get to take naps. Waiting for the condo to sell so we can finally move (I want a garage and a small yard). Then maybe I can fix some of the broken electronics on the 4Runner.

Same ish, different day - still a temp employee (after a full year), getting tired of wearing a button down shirt and suckling the corporate teet, thinking about going back into a shop but not sure - - mini-projects on the runner abound -> retro-fitting a rear air deflector from a gen 2, still gotta assemble my elocker 3rd w/ 4.88s and swap the LSD to the 4.88 front 3rd, Chris got me thinking about center consoles (just picked up a 40mm ammo can as a base), thinking hard on sliders (have a slick bolt-on bracket in mind using my stock leaf spring u-bolts), fixed the backhoe . . . all the stuff that never ends

Scube, dude, you went from Venice Beach to Long Beach with the hair - it looks . . . respectable

Left for some whitetail hunting at my cabin sat night, today was sooo cold and then hot I came back inside after 3 hours of being miserable. I just couldnt stay warm and kept getting chills then frying. Went to sleep for 3 hours and then concluded im sick and shouldnt be sitting in a free in 15 degree weather. Went home obviously, shame I didnt get anything but ive already gotten 7 deer in the past few years so im good. Was only waiting for that monster buck anyways.

Waiting to paint and put a fender on the T100 then sell it to whomever will pay me the most. I want it gone, period dont care anymore. No matter what I do the rear axle keeps leaking at the seal on the axleshaft.

Trying to save up for a Tundra or Superduty diesel (prefer tundra but right price wins imho), looking to put down a good nut and loan the rest. Hoping my savings and money i get from the T100 gives me a 10k nut or better. Hard to save when you are working on various projects. Since my cousins wife is the CS rep for the bank I use I am hoping she can help a bit too.

Works gotten slow, ugh got cut back again (no surprise there) and i been trying to find something else but there just isnt anything flexible enough. I now work m-f and dont have to work weekends so im kinda stuck. Looking to maybe become an EMT depending on how work goes. The promise of hours (they always have them), 36hr work weeks vs 40-50 and more money is nice. The training is what I dont feel like, I was a fire fighter but its been a long time (they know alot of the same basic info). We shall see, really hoping by summer to get it started depending on how things go.

Got into university, still havent received my info yet so I had called and they confirmed it. Trying to make an appt soon to go over transfer and see what I can do since I have a 2 yr degree. Looking to major in crim justice just cause IDK what else to pick.

Working slowly on my one atv, need some new rear wheels and tires as mine are offset thanks tot he PO and I dont like them-to small too. Other atv needs the motor redone but gonna have that done by spring hopefully.

Im just really bidding my time

Yeah Keith, 50% off!!!

So got the o2 sensor half in, have to get new nuts since I rounded the old ones taking them off.... Dang rust...

And upon doing that discovered that my one cv popped out....
hopefully i can get that popped in enough, take it to school and get them to replace it (the boots are gone practically....)

;) You all have seen my posts so you already know what's new with us. :D

Daniel, I have 2 R2-D2 Technics, with the computer, as well as the sopwith camel, all covered in dust from sitting on a shelf in the garage, make me a good offer and I'll break them down, put them into whatever lego boxes i have left and send them off.

They're not going to be passed on as I know we now need to shop for Barbie toys.

**Shoot me a pm so I don't detour this thread, Oly, sorry to pimp slightly.

Oh, my finals are next week, I can completely bomb and still get a C+ average, so that's great. Finishing up my campus residency in Spring w/ just a 1-1/2 unit athletics course, then hopefully the State system figures out it's stuff, or I get a good job or consider a couple offers for private institution Business Degree options. I'm less than 3 classes away from another AA option, so who knows, schools been fun and good to me so I am keeping my options open, the private institution's look nice b/c of the added grants I can add to what I already have.

Either way, I finally have a piece of paper proving I'm not entirely stupid, just an A$$/jerk is all.

Get it, AA = Another A$$h0le..

*EDIT: Also some good interviews coming up, so maybe some work/school deal?

Congrats to NorCal on the addition!

Few new things for me. First off, I bought a house! I'll get the motivation to create a thread dedicated to it.

Other than that, I've just been working on my house, and working at work (sounds fun, I know)

Yearning to go camping soon, but that's going to have to wait till after the new year. Snow camping FTW!

iv been doing ok lately...

im newly single, and trying to figure out what that means in my life... little awkward cuz im still stuck in a lease with the ex-gf for a few months... (at least its a 2 bedroom)

tryin to make some new friends, as iv been realizing lately that iv drifted from a lot of my old close friends. Succeeding to an extent.

Gettin ready to go back to school next semester after a few year hiatus. not sure what ill be taking though...

The truck is developing a few issues, that ill need to sort out soon... for right now im just driving it cuz i know this thing is pretty much indestructable...

also this cold storm had me trying to turn on the heater in my apartment... only to find out that it doesnt work (worked when we moved in in April...)

I think thats about it thats new for right now...

Not to pry into your personal life, but do you think that's because you've been in a relationship a while? I have a lot of friends I don't hear from much anymore because either A) They got married or B) They're wrapped up in a serious relationship.

Just my .02, How's everyone else?

:good: i fear ive done the same with my current relationship, in addition to school and such, its really taken a priority over everything. i suppose its just part of the natural process.

right now im studying for back to back finals tomorrow, very stressed out about them both.

the money we had saved is now going for my brother in laws burial costs, died of a drug overdose a few days ago (we didnt even know he was using, sucks, we could have helped him) but such is life.

kevin, for your ex and the lease, i agree. pay your half (to the landlord since your on the lease too and responsible when she blows your rent money on whatever girls blow money on (guys would be strippers, beer, and truck parts!)) and RUN, even if you have to sleep at a buddys house or your truck. its not worth staying with her.

12-08-2009, 04:09 PM
Scuba, Maybe just go out and buy some longer bolts to get you started. A lot of times once I start bolting them together it just pops into place. Another trick I use to make sure everything is aligned perfectly is to buy the same thread bolt but 2" or 3" longer, throw them in my drill press and use the grinder to grind off their heads. Once it's down to a stud I just thread those into the engine and the transmission slips right into place. Good luck finishing before the rain!

alot of times you have to raise the tail of the trans to get it to slip on, since when you pulled it off the engine tweaked itself forward because there was a few hundred pounds less on the back of it. that has worked for me in the past.

Just be careful you don't break off the bolt ears (seen that happen before on a domestic) - don't go all "crack-head tight" on the bolts - if it's not going at all it's not going. I like the idea of using the headless bolts as a guide though.

You did use a clutch alignment tool, right?

Scuba
12-08-2009, 05:32 PM
Yes Kieth I used the alignment tool, and actually this morning before I started working on it again

*A bit up the spectrum of an insurance carrier's policy ladder, but given that she's lost family members, you're both trying for kids, I have to ask, are there any niece(s) or nephew(s)?

Reason is, since Lil'Bro and I are the last of my lineage, we were completely able to have a full tiered level of suport, right down to the wife's diabetes monitoring, an immediate amniocentesis, multiple sonograms, cripes, they mapped her and baby more than I map my heart rate, etc for athletics.

It all falls under the "Quality of Life" and "Genetic Preservation" clauses. Pm me, maybe we can help you two out a little with the terminology and how to go about it so they'll cover things initially denied.

LOL.. I kinda figured it came down to an alignment issue, usually does. Glad to hear its in. Bet the clutch feels way different dont it? I changed one once and the pedal feel was drastic-released much higher when bad and much lower when new.

Today I worked on my atv and didnt get to far. Was hoping to get the steering stem back on. Got the bar clamps on it and lined them up after a bit, but upon trying to get the bearing out i screwed up and didnt realize it had a c-clip in it, well after much pounding and mangling the bearing (it was dirty in there so that mighta not been why i could find it??) im not left with a c clip my pliers wont get out. Can get it a bit out then it slips..going to the shop AM tomorrow to see about another kinda pliers maybe or maybe ill try some large needlenose or hell cut the thing off. Go and get some other snap ring pliers from the shop today and still no luck. Ok I finally break down and go buy the dremel I been wanting for 5 years now (of all the tools I have I always borrowed one of these from someone lol) and begin to cut and grind the sucker off.

Half hour later I finally get the mangled thing off. Didnt damage the frame to much either. Woulda prefered no damage but what can you do. I just hope everything sits right in there now since the frames been a bit marred up. Probably seal it well with some silicone on the dust seal or maybe bearing grease.

Ugh..annoyances..

The newness :
English Lit is over - Thank God.
My GF just went back to Disney to work for a few weeks. Good for her, but I miss the heck outta her...
Working on my rear bumper project, it's slow going but I'm making progress...
Work is bumping right along, I like being in the produce business, people gotta eat, that means I have to work, which means I can afford to eat...

Ehh... Other than that, not much is "new"

The wife is tired of me using the "family trailer" to haul things. I use it for my 4wheeler and weekly i deliever food pack to schools so kids will have something to eat while away from school. I am always fixing the trailer due to my broter in law and others. This morning i heard the sweetest words..."Why dont you keep your eye out for a good used toyota truck". I amost wrecked the runner with the nerdy fist pump and the YESSSSSSS!

What's new? Well, I've had some health problems lately...broken ribs, more oral surgery, influenza etc. and all of the complications in life and career than are generated by that. :lame:

Other than that, I bought some more guns and have been preparing my shop for winter runner projects.

Guns I bought: Tikka T3 in 300 win mag., another lever action wichester 94 in .44 mag, a Sig 556 swat classic in 5.56x45 and another Beretta 92fs (for my 14 yr old)(my gun for his use and modification)

I know, all those aftermarket alarm installs SUCK it seems and people always lose the remotes or the batteries die in them and the kill switches never work. I hate working on these things. I had one where you could unplug it to start it but had to do it every single time no matter how I messed with it.

@Fuster, sounds like some rough times for your health. How do you like the the sig 556 tho? Worth the cash?

Hehe. The Jr Fusters and I were rough-housing over Thanksgiving. They are getting so strong that I lost my center of gravity and went down hard on the couch arm thingy. I heard a crack, but assumed it was the couch...turns out it was my right rib cage. It didn't even hurt initially. But the next day and for several there after, the pain gradually maxed beyond my threshold. Mrs Fuster explained it to me in Doc-speak, but danged if I can remember all that jargon.

Still waiting for the 556 to arrive at my FFL. Can't wait to see how it 'smokes'... Will post pics and review after I shoot it next weekend. Hope my ribs can take it.

*Math Prof convinced me to go ahead and take my final a little earlier so I could take care of other things in life. I accepted on the reasoning that anything I didn't know by now, I wouldn't know well enough 10 hours later.

I know I got at least a "C", plus one of the extra credit questions, but I doubt that I got any better than a "B" overall, and worst case, hopefully only a "C" if I really bombed it. I'm accepting things as done good enough to pass, but not the level I wanted to be at so I would have a little more power to get the funding I wanted. We'll see how I did overall and how it'll affect my ability to expand my grants next semester.

I'm blaming all this on stress and serious sleep deprivation, and no, I wouldn't have things any differently.

jerkin around with mom's car. i hate honda, their designs are stupid and their electrical engineer needs to be shot in the face with bull sperm.

been painting. i was seriously mislead on the quality of the primer i bought. ill have to lightly sand it all before i can top coat it, and the dry time is insane at 24 hours. what was suppose to be a 3 day project is quickly turning into a 7 or 8 day project. i think ill let it dry for 48-72 hours because it is cooler here for most of the day, and some of the primer is kinda thick where there are metal gaps.

Spray or gun paint? If spray, You got the wrong Krylon then, or the temps are affecting the cure. PIck yourself up a IR bulb and a shop light, the older style to push the cure time.

There's a batch of semi-gloss we have that takes 3 days to cure and the nozzles alwaysa re clogging. I took them in and exchanged them as defective for some flat. Want the sku's we use for primer and top coat?

Really considering trading it in when I get a tundra, they will most likely scrap it. Shame, 3.4L with 60k and the trans shifts super good too and the trucks super clean besides. Sad bet is i sell it to someone and they wind up fixing it for good.

I honestly dont even wanna play with it anymore. I swapped the axleshaft and here is the part that makes no sense at all.

I put a whole new axleshaft in as the pass side was bent which is common on these since its the drive wheel. It leaked, I had the seal changed by my old mech like 2x, my buddy at his shop 2x and another buddy who totally had the axle and every last thing on the shaft replaced except backing plate replaced. Before it was originally replaced-no leak..

Funny thing is about a month before I redid the axleshaft for the last time I replaced all the body mounts and bingo my vibe went away. Was fine till I had the shaft redone, nothing he did installing it imho, no whine from the rear or anything. I think the body might be a bit tweaked

I honestly think A the axle housing where the shaft goes is tweaked. I once went offroad and it became washboard and before I could stop the truck jumped around like it was on hydraulics. and B. b/c of a it leaks no matter what. possibly C is the body is tweaked, you feel the vibe in the floorboards when on the gas, no gas its fine really. However when you get over about 50mph it feels like the tires are totally out of balance. I tried rebalancing and putting an entire different set of wheels with brand new tires and it doesnt matter. Toyota said front wheel bearings, did that too..

I replaced so much its not funny and i just want it gone. Basically besides the interior and body, the electronics, trans and such everything is new or changed or has been looked at. All new front end, springs redone (wasnt cheap either), every pc of rubber that is a mount or suspensions new, shocks, exhaust, fuel pump and lines, brake lines, calipers, drums, shoes, engine was brand new longblock toyota instaled and everything about 60k ago, truck only has 200k on it. etc, etc. Avy will tell you its really clean (hell I even painted the frame) otherwise.

I dont want to deal anymore, currently its leaking gear oil ALL over the one drum. I want it gone, gone, gone and never to return. I wouldnt dick anyone over inth e wheeling community tho unless they wanted to take it with the issues fully understood. Imho these trucks used with the mileage I have and in worse shape (ie not everything nice and new)for like 6-7k with 200k on them. All I want is like 3-4k and I can die happy.

Hey, anyone who wants it and dont mind whats with it, bring me somewhere close to what I want and its yours...Otherwise I find someone who will take it off my hands or the dealer.

True, HP is bringing the suck lately. I shouldn't complain much, this one was part of the student deal between Mac and HP, so I got the first one for free and this on warranty.

It just pisses me off b/c it's always when I am doing my bigger papers, first ne crapped out during Summer Session Finals and this one w/ todays paper and printouts/pics.

I cleaned everything out, including sopping up as much as possible out of the spit trays. I'll watch it over the next month and probably end up throwing up on craigslist or ebay for dirt cheap.

Finally, now I'm am off to make the house's internet wireless, just need to run a 30' data cable to the router, going to find a really good spot to put it, then encrypting the crap out of things. :D

*Up (again) helping feed the baby and such, so I decided to finally organize all the expense receipts for my 4Runner.
**Gas and oil changes not included as those are general maintenance things.

2007 $9,419.70 **includes original purchase.

2008 $3,373.72 **miscellaneous stuff, sliders, lift, tires, rebuilt the A340E, and swapped the 3rd out.

2009 $5733.78 **Bumpers, 4wd+5speed swap, headgaskets and miscellaneous NOS Factory Parts.

***2008 and 2009 are skewed numbers since I did most of the work, or helped with it, so i saved a huge amount off of labor.

Total since purchase: $18,547.20 :spit:
Average per year: $6182.40

When did you get a winch? Is it mounted? What did you get?

I chose to not tally up everything because I know that I've spent a lot in the nearly 2 years of ownership. I'd say 1/3 of the amount is maintenance and the other 2/3 is from my "projects". Overall I am pretty happy with the vehicle and see myself spending much more on it.

haha i finished installing it 15 mins after i got the call from patrick to come rescue him! full posting soon.

i refuse to add up all those numbers. i just dont want to look at it. theres also a bill for 900 for all belts and hoses (professionally done, thats why its so expensive), 700-800 for the stereo system, 70 for an alarm. when i had the computer that was another 1200-1500.

Lets see:

Bought the T100 for 7500 in late 04, or maybe it was 05 I forget now.

I dont feel like listing it all, but imho I spent about 4-6k trying to fix it over the past few years-most of it this year.

Bought by '90 4runner in '01 for $2400. I've put probably about $2500 into it since then, mostly routine maintenance, couple sets of tires/rims, and a few oddball issues I've had.

Gas from dragging your ass across the country. :tongueout: :spit:

Lil'Bro brought his Runner for us to do the work on the missing stud from the fan idler assembly. Tore it all down, upgraded to the ringless fan assembly, then went about fixing his surging idle issue, a stuck dashpot and horrible tune done by a lazy mechanic. Tackling the little interior bits/etc tomorrow.

:D 6 hours of man time and family bonding! Woot!
