View Full Version : 2002 Toyota 4Runner Stock Spring replacement

As the title says,
I am looking for stock spring replacement on a 2002 Toyota 4Runner, SR5 Sports Edition with the 3.4l.

My stepdads 4Runner is 250 miles shy of rolling over 200K.
And today I finally looked and said enough is enough,
when my mom came home from the store,
with the truck loaded it was sitting on its bump stops...

I am figuring of changing both front and rear coils as well as shocks to the 99 style.
Give the truck a slightly better look and hopefully get rid of the poor rear sag.

I was looking at Sonoran's site for the stock replacement,
and all is well there but I really don't think my stepdad needs that extreme of shock.

I will run to my dealer to see what kind of discount I can get through school,
but I was hoping to go there with a part number so I know I would be getting the right coils.

Also if anyone has found any good deals online for these item to pass them my way.
Also any suggestions on shocks would be nice too, again, just OEM no lift.

Thanks in advance, this will probably be a belated x-mas present for him since I am still paying off some stuff for my 4Runner, and really don't have the cash to put straight forward on this.

I just would like to get some research out of the way.

Avy, what about just going with some OME coils like I did (you can see pics in my signature)? They might give him about 1.25 to 1.5", but they'll still work with the stock shocks if you want, relatively inexpensive and no need for panhard bars/spacers/etc. That way the truck will at least sit level with a load in the back. Just my $0.02 though.

If you are dead set on OEM coils from the dealer, at least get the ones from a 99 Highlander Sport.

It sounds like spacers are the way you want to go. All they will do is raise the truck off the bumpstops and you will keep the stock spring rate so the ride will be exactly the same.

I wasn't fully set on OEM, I just didn't want to lift the truck to high,
He really doesn't use it for that purpose but I guess with the 99 Highlander coils it would have been lifting it just as much as yours.

The whole lift in complete is a little more then steve's though, however I was thinking, Can I use my front shocks (I have the Black Tociko's from the old sonoran lift) with the front springs from OME?

Also Jamie are you running medium or heavy duty springs and shocks?
I am having trouble finding the what the heavy duty or medium duty springs are, I figure medium duty would be enough.

Steve, spacers are a good cheap alternative if I have to come down to it but with the suspension being as worn as it is I mights as switch it all out, might help the resale value if we do get rid of it (though I don't think that will be happening anytime sonn ;) )

Here's a few answers from my viewpoint.

1) Yes, the Highlander coils would be lifting the truck a bit but using Highlander coils in the rear with standard coils in front may give you a bit less sag over time. Problem is you'll still have a rake because the spring rate is quite soft on those OEM coils. I could never find an OEM coil setup I'd like without using cruiser coils and I didn't want to lift my truck more than 2" max.

2) Yes, your front shocks will work with the OME's.

3) I'm using "light duty" coils in the front and rear as well as the "comfort" shocks. Check my sig for actual part numbers.

4) While spacers are a good cheap option, once your coils have begun to sag, they should be replaced. Spacers then become a bandaid at that point.

And spacers will wear out your stock coils even more than they already are now. You'll sit higher, but you'll feel every little bump in the road. I think your idea of going with '99 coils is the best option.
