Chris' talk of center consoles lately got me thinking - I've seen plenty of "ammo can" center consoles, but most are the skinny .30 cal cans or the short .50 cal ammo cans which look cheap and redneck. I found a can that I like much better -> a 40mm can

these measure 17" long x 6.5" wide and 10" tall - high enough for an arm rest and just as long as the stock center console (minus the part that holds the rear window and wiper switches) so it should blend in nicely. The only bad part about it is that it has a latch on both ends, whereas I need a hinge on one end. This is where I started:

and this is where I ended up with the help of 4" door hinge - the latch has resistance when closing so I think it might still be waterproof

the door hinge even makes it so the lid doesn't just flop all the way back :D

Tonight the oil based grey paint dries, tomorrow I'll relocate the rear window and wiper switches to the knock-outs beneath the radio and hopefully get it installed

Sounds like it should work good for 1st gens and 2nd gens that don't have the rear heater in the center console.

I've never seen those 40mm cans. We always used these M548 40mm cans (http://www.olive-drab.com/od_firearms_ammo_cans_m548_40mm.php) and I was thinking, there's no way that will fit in a 4runner between the seats :headscratch:. Didn't realize that they made two different 40mm ammo cans. The dimensions on the ones I'm used to using are 18.5L x 8.3w x 14.5h They are pretty big, great for the cargo area or a truck bed. The dimensions of the one you have sounds great.

Nice site you linked  - found out the one I'm using is a PA-120 can, (http://www.olive-drab.com/od_firearms_ammo_cans_pa_120_40mm.php) bought it at Coleman's Surplus (http://www.colemans.com/index.php) for $15 - I love this place, it's in the middle of a farm field surrounded by shipping containers with who knows what inside, and the "store" part is as nearly as big as a KMart. Need a 10,000 lb Pettibone forklift? How about a military genset? Field surgical table? Spare hummvee tank? Check under the "container" section for Gerry cans (might ship these to CA, not sure if they care about CA's gas can regs.)

I like having the idea of a "Black Box" on a 4Runner. If my truck goes down in a ball of flames, the only thing left will be a small ammo can full of all the cool things that will carry on my legacy.

Keith that comment about the .50 cal cans looking redneck and stupid really cut me. Just when I thought we had something special. Lol.

(I'm on my BB - I'll do it when I get home.)

Not stupid . . . just too easy. I like doing things the hard way :D

I'm starting to think that I might just mount this sucker in the back anyway - this thing is so big and I just don't know how much crap I really need to stick in the center console. Maybe if I put some dividers in it and a false bottom ;)
