who's up for some duran next Sunday? its a pretty tough trail with some beautiful scenery. here is a video of the last time we took this exact route.

Minimum Req's.
33's and rear locker

chang-0-plans
its going to be a Big Bear snow run since the box canyons will be prone to flash floods

north meeting spot:
McDonalds at Bear Valley / I-15 (In Victorville). Leave there around 8:30 then head to 3N16 / Hwy 18 to meet at the trailhead at about 10am.

south meeting spot:
Here is where we met last time we went up the hills.
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&source=hp&q=4210+E.+Highland+Ave+Highland+%2C+Ca+92346&btnG=Google+Search&aq=f&aql=&aqi=&oq=4210+E.+Highland+Ave+Highland+%2C+Ca+92346&cad=h It was easy to find. Please be there by 8:30 latest. It could get hairy going up and we might have to take it slow. If were early up there so what.
Wal Mart parking lot Next to the Tarbell Realtors
4210 E. Highland Ave
Highland , Ca 92346

change-o-plans lol
big bear has formed a glacier and there is chaos in the streets. we're headed to the Pilot Rock truck trail for a day of getting stuck and tow straps whilst we frolic in the snow

requirments:
cold/wet weather gear. blankets and extra food/water are a good idea for shtf.
truck capable of some sort of snow travel aka decent tires. bring recovery gear....most snow runs end up "recovery" runs

 Should be a fun day.

What time's the start and where should we meet ?
We should probably get an early start this time..

You care if I come crash at you're place so I dont have such a long drive the morning of ?

Peggy Sues (http://maps.google.com/maps/place?sourceid=ie7&rls=com.microsoft:en-us:IE-SearchBox&oe=&um=1&ie=UTF-8&q=peggy+sues+dinner+barstow&fb=1&gl=us&hq=peggy+sues+dinner&hnear=barstow&cid=12458726221278620470)is a good spot to start for calico. we can always arange other convoys to there but everyone has to drive by that place anyhow. meet there at 10? earlier is always best but thats pretty far for some guys. and yea steve ill even set up the air matress for you if you dont want the couch.

10 sounds ok, as long as we don't dilly dally to trail head and whatnot.

You dont have to setup the air matress man, I remember that couch was pretty ok.
I get off work at 5 sat, should be up to your place by 7 I suppose. And thanks, Even though I imposed :D

So, yer talkin' Sun 1-24?

Could be wet up there. Seven days of rain ahead

Could still be fun though

troyboy162
01-18-2010, 08:25 AM
yea it might be wild. if its still raining im not sure if box canyons are the place to be but we can figure something.

I would stay away from Calico for a week or two if I was you. But if you need me to recover you from a washed out canyon give me a call :tongueout:

Yeah troy, Jason bitched out. Apparently it's too far for him when he goes to pismo for day runs

Anyway, I think we'll be okay as long as it's not still pouring when were there. If it get's to wild we can use bullfrog or cleghorn as an alternate.

troyboy162
01-18-2010, 05:26 PM
bullfrog is a good secondary. we could actualy overland to there from peggy sues as a last minute thing if need be.

Jasons truck is a bit nice for duran anyhow

O/T but why do you code your trip dates this way?? So it doesn't come up on anti-access searches?

truthfully i have some sort of failure with dates and have a hard time with things like 1/2/10 in that i couldnt tell you if thats the standerd form of jan 2nd or feb 1st. day to day life seems to swap the format and usage too much. so when i can i go with the mill standerd of YYYYMMDD. in the millitary you will almost never see anything written differently and it was conforting lol

i think the odessa squeeze might be trashed after these rains. Jen(yotagirl) told me once how she had seen the trench on the left much deeper.

i think we gotta be ready with alternates or full on pick another spot. weather reports show rain right up untill sunday. today vic vegas had some flooding on the roads.

the bad
-aftershock and clawhammer will be messed up too by the rains.
-odessa canyon could be unpassable and/or actualy flowing water

the good
-duran isnt as canyoned out like odessa and might be in better shape.
-philips drive will be fine
-mule canyon will be soupy but probly ok
-lots of mines to explore but they will be wet too.

although, the navy always writes dates like 24JAN2010

i much prefer jan 24, 2010 or 24 jan 2010.

mmddyyyy or ddmmyyyy formats are often confusing for US/international reasons, so i try to avoid solid strings of numbers or even mm/dd/yyyy because there is nothing to distinguish month from day.

have a good time and be safe. im sitting out wheeling for a while longer. parts are expensive!

Troy, we might have someone to lead us through big bear..
You wanna just say eff it and change the run to big bear snow bashing?

troyboy162
01-19-2010, 10:52 AM
is it gonna be possible? this rain is mostly snow up there...

bullfrog? rattlesnake? some exploring overlad type stuff? or maybe we're ready for "DAS PUMKIN EATER" lol

cleghorn. Lol

Scuba
01-19-2010, 10:58 AM
We just ran cleghorn 2 days ago. Troy, rattlesnake may be a viable option. But at least we know we have someone to lead us. We should be okay on some of the roads in the bb trail system

troyboy162
01-19-2010, 11:03 AM
actualy i still havnt done the pilot/cleg run, but steves truck may wither and die if it dosnt get heathy does of rocks soon lol.

yea ive got all the gps on my computer for every trail from the cajon pass to 29 palms. BB roads is an idea though. if the snows deep we can just try fire roads for fun.

got a tire chain i can borrow to show them? ive heard you can just point to one single chain for any size tire and they let you go because they dont have time to investigate the matter

troyboy162
01-19-2010, 04:36 PM
steve what do you think?

pumkin eater
rattle snake
snow roads.. BB is predicting a few feet by the weekend.
fissure mtn <- actualy looks awsome like a cleghorn with the volume turned way up
bullfrog
dishpan
cleg/pilot backwards

....ive got them all on GPS

How about snow bashing then rattlesnake?
Never heard of pumpkin eater.
See above for rattlesnake, oh and, with all this talk about getting into canyons and flash floods, would it really be smart to run rattlesnake canyon?
I heard fissure wasn't much
I don't know my way around bullfrog so we would need a guide
I would think dishpan would be covered in snow and part impassable
eff cleg, eff pilot :p

troyboy162
01-19-2010, 05:30 PM
How about snow bashing then rattlesnake?

you think we will have time for both? snow bashing could be all day fun. how many chains do you have?

ok ive got the latest news and this is what the roads are set up as

"Open with chains required on all vehicles except four-wheel drives and all-wheel drives with snow tires."

so we are all set with our 4x4. i read that to mean all-wheel drives aka cars need snow tires

they are expecting 2-3 feet of snow. so that means drifts as high as 4 feet probably at a max. this might be pretty tough depending on how light the snow is.

either way me and you scuba will need something in front of the radiators if we are going to be plowing show. ive got some cheap gutter filter type stuff...

ill update some requirements

yea the snow will be up around that level if it gets deep and we may be plowing so you could jam a stick in there or a piece of ice. my stuff really sucks but it will work for now.

Ok PILOT ROCK it is.

I personally dont have the money to go buy a set of chains. Getting to big bear could be a mess, Especially if 18 is the only highway open.

Plan is to meet at MCdees at 8:30 and be at pilot trail head by 9-9:15

Please post up if your going to be there so we know who and how many trucks to expect.

If we get through pilot quick enough we might be able to hit some other trails near arrowhead

If anyone needs it, give me a call at 210-902-9 oh 5 four
