Recently I upgraded my interior dome light to an LED and added a separate hatch light. Total project cost was about $20. Full details including parts and measurements can be found at the following link:

And some pictures showing the results. All of these were taken with the exact same exposure settings so you can compare brightness and color.

Here's the stock 5w dome light.

And the LEDs.

Matt,

AWESOME. I was looking to do this project this year and now you made it exponentially easier. Thanks for documenting, you rock.

Nice. I don' think I can own a car without led domes any more.

I agree. The only interior lights I'd leave as incandescents are the front map lights, the LEDs are too bright and would destroy my night vision at night if they were turned on while driving. Of course this can always be solved by running them at ~200mA to lower the brightness.

Yeah, the hard part is trying to figure out how to dissipate the higher current/energy that the Crees need. With the new off the shelf drivers, it makes it a little easier.

That's way I"ve got a red cree run at 350 ma for night vision run alopng with my map lights.

*That was you we drove past on the 80 around a week ago while I playing around in the #'s 1&2 lanes with the guy in the black FJ-C, right?
(Yes, we were driving a wee-leetttle fast, but were in complete control..sorry 'bout that.)

looks awesome, thanks for the write up.

did you replace your center dome with the LED also or just the trunk/hatch?

I replaced the stock trunk light and added a hatch light, the center dome light is still stock but could very likely be replaced with a similar setup.
