i am helping a friend out with his 99' 4runner that has 265/ 70 16 's
currently on it.
we are keping the stock rims, what larger (taller and wider)sizes can i put on without a lift and without any rubbing or need of shaving fenders.

thanks

265 75R16s are kind of the standard one step upgrade. (taller, not any wider.)

285 75R16's take you in the danger zone....

they will fit on the stock wheels but will make contact with the upper control arm and will rub at full lock/stuff.

Without ANY modification, I would say you can run the 265/75/16's.
anything other than that you are going to want to lift/trim something....

For Comparison:

265/70/16 (which is stock)
30.6 inches tall nominally. (Varies slightly depending on the brand/model of tire)
10.4 inches wide.

265/75/16
31.6 inches tall nominally. (Again, this varies slightly depending on brand/model of tire)
10.4 inches wide.
With a 265/75/16 your speedo will also be off by 3.4% - For instance when your speedo says you are going 60 mph, you will actually be going 62 mph.

285/75/16
32.8 inches tall nominally. (Again, this varies slightly depending on brand/model of tire)
11.2 inches wide.
With a 285/75/16 your speedo will also be off by 7.3% - For instance when your speedo says you are going 60 mph, you will actually be going 64.4 mph.

I second 265/75's. I run them on my 2000 and I get a little rub, mainly when turning into parking lots when there's a dip. If his 99 has the tall coils there should be no problem at all.

I don't know if my coils are the same as the 99 w/o talls. If so he may have to take the running boards off to cut down on the rubbing. It seems to vary a lot. Some people with 00 have no problems either.
