Well, this is the first time I've ever broken a CV shaft (on this 4Runner or the old one). Trying to haul ass up a soft hill and hitting a rock under the dirt will do that I guess... :hillbill: I thought I heard a clanking noise driving home... :headscratch:

Edit- do embedded youtube videos not work any more?

Some pictures of the flex with the new longer shocks. The rear REALLY drops now...

Went out with the guy that bought my old 4Runner. It's still just as scrappy as ever with that rear lunchbox locker.

Nice at least you hear yours,
It took about a hour of roughing it through a trail till someone spotting me finally noticed I was just spinning my rear tires.
Have fun changing it, Not really hard, I did it on dirt you have pavement :-)

What size socket do I need to take the axle nut off the CV- 34 or 35mm?
This thread says 34mm: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/3rd-gen-t4rs/37735-replacing-front-half-shaft.html
4x4wire says 35mm: http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/maintenance/cv_axle/
The FSM doesn't say. So which is it?

Yeah I wasn't willing to go wandering around the wasteland of auto parts stores here in NNM, so I bought this Northern Tool one:

About $20 shipped is ok with me...

Haha, I had an argument over this years ago....some were saying 36mm, but it's too sloppy, but will work, 35mm is what I recommended. The nut actually has a slight taper, so the 34mm almost fits.
I've got a decent collection of busted CV's that I constantly rebuild.....

My 35mm socket "arrived" in the mail today:

Oh wait, no it didn't. It broke out of the POS paper envelope they mailed it in. Now I have to call them tomorrow and get one sent overnight if I expect to fix my car this weekend.

Here is the envelope that showed up:

Looking pretty flat, not seeing any tears but it's definitely not heavy enough to have a socket in it...

Both sides look sealed...

You can rent a 35 from AutoZone. I did that for a 35 and 36 and just ended up keeping them. They happen to be a good size for a bearing that needed driving. I'd be emailing them and sending them pictures (kudos on the pictures BTW).
