View Full Version : Occasionally I have a small victory...

...so I am proof that even the most slothful among our number here is sometimes compelled to periods of productivity; the latest requiring uncharacteristic focus and stamina. Anyway, during my absence I stumbled upon a commercial grade lawn edger for sale....CHEAP! I've always wanted one of those real man 2+ hp 4 cycle belt driven edgers, but my lust for such was always eclipsed by the cost.
This one popped up on my radar for 20 dollars. New, it was 450.00, but for some reason it wouldn't start. I drove over to see it and extract info from the owner. As he explained the conditions just prior to the edger's apparent demise, I knelt down, removed the gas cap and sniffed.....
I quickly gave the owner 20.00 and expeditiously retreated nearly leaving skid marks. My nasal acuity is diverse enough to not only sniff out a bargain, but to detect when a negligent previous owner fills a 4 cycle fuel tank with 2 cycle fuel. The resultant fouled plug prevented ignition and flooded the cylinder.
So, for a 20 I am + one 450.00 lawn edger and am enjoying a small victory. Anyone want to buy a piece of crap Weedeater brand 2 cycle girlyman lawn edger for 50.00? :hillbill:

Not to best you, but my neighbor threw away one of those home depot models that had to have cost 250 bucks about 5 years back. He had bent the guard and I guess said Eff it. 10 mins of bending it back and I was golden.
Reminds me of the pressure washer someone threw out, it pumps and everything works (its a 3hp model) but its missing hoses. would make for a nice go-kart engine :)

Sure, why not chime in..my wife decided to let me catch up on some z's today, but wasn't around to make sure I actually got up on my day-off.
I woke up around 1:30pm freaking out going "Oh Crap!" while realizing I wasn't gonna get a couple of errands done. I raced off to class, made it into school today in spite of having completely "Baby Bonked" my morning away.
The last few weeks between Father-In-Law and what might be the baby teething has been having me get less than 1 hour total sleep at night, and that's in spurts, always being woken up. Nuf said.

No, I was actually defeated by a paper shredder yesterday. I wasted 40 minutes trying to fix it then said a bunch of swear words and threw it away. Someone else can gladly claim victory by picking it out of my trash. All I can say is once one shredding wheel gets catywhompas it takes the other wheels out with it--literally shredding itself to pieces.

I got 5th place in my first mountain bike race of the season. Not bad considering I've had little time on the mountain bike this past year and I'm racing in Expert class.

Paper shredder? I keep a burn bag that I throw stuff in. When it comes time I douse it in gas, pile wood around it and watch it burn while enjoying a brew. Sometimes I even put it in the firepit.

i used my winch for the first time yesterday. pulled 4 fence posts that were in hard Redlands clay 1 foot of it was in clay, the upper most foot was quite a bit of concrete. no problem for my winch!!! also pulled out a pretty deep cloths line post.
later i get to pull out a post that is about 2" above grade. im hoping i can just weld another post inside it and pull on that, as i really dont want to dig it out by hand, 2-4 feet down in the soil.
winch FTW!
Mine isnt as good, but years ago back when I played paintabll as much as I wheel now, lol I use to do what I called the Pawn shop circuit, about once a month Id go to all the pawn shops in town, and once I found a Tippman custom 98, I asked to look at it since I couldnt see the price, he handed it to me, looked good, the sticker said $40, it was sitting there complete, marker, sniper barrel, hopper, 2-20oz bottles, mask, and a case, so I asked is it $40 for all of it ? he looked at it and said yes... I gave him the $40 and walked..
I used that marker every weekend for about 4 months, then took just the marker to a paintball store and sold it for $100, I kept the barrel, hopper, mask, and case, since I already had a Tippman custom, I thought I did pretty good..
Another good deal for me was, I had bought a Yamaha YSR50 for $800 rode that for about two years, and used it as a pitbike, then sold it for $1200, not bad..

:) I still love that pic Ken!! If someone had it in better resolution/still I'd rock it!!
FWIW..I was let go on the same day I found out I already have $6k in funding for the next school year, so I guess that would count as a small victory.

...and to think some poor photographer was told to stand there in the pouring rain and wait for a good shot. I am glad I could provide him material. :)

Is this recent?

Yep, "let go", like as in about 2 hours before I posted that. Then made to smile when I got my SAR (Student Aid Report) for the pending year since I'm gonna try to keep going as far as the Sociology/Behavioral/Politics/Psychology avenues. I'm still interviewing/talking with some schools and I'll cop to whichever I decide on when I finally decide.

Sorry to hear that but the SAR results sound good. My SAR always brought me bad news--no grants, only loans and unsubsidized at that. Once I graduated and got a real job I kept living like a college student for about six months and paid off the student loan debt I had accumulated. Hopefully you're more on the grant side than the loan side, that always helps.
