Yea sucks, he told me over aim and im like "you broke something did you" before he even came out with it.
Ill make you feel better a bit Avy: Friends and I drove 2 hours to ride atv's, one of them got literally 1/4 mile onto this horrible rocky trail we went on, it stalled and wouldnt turn over again period and sounded like something let go. Worst is he bought it used 3 months ago..
So yea, at least you know wtf it is.
I can say tho I totally relate-where I am now with my vibration is cause of offroading and one of the main reasons when I finally can get a new vehicle Im not going offroading besides fireroads..

Good guess Sean. I would have never guessed front diff since you can pull the axles and keep driving it. I would have guessed a hydrolocked engine...

auto locking hubs, the bearings in the spindle rely on the cv shaft for support, if they weren't in I would be loosing my front wheels quick.
Does anyone have an idea as to what 4Runners came with the 4.30 gear ratio in my generation 4Runner, I know that the 97 I got mine from was a limited but it also has an e-locker, what I am wondering is if the no e-locked 3rd gen Runners of the same time period (96-98 at least) came with the 4.30 ratio as well.

That's very easy to get around. Turn the steering wheel all the way to the right, go to the Passenger Side wheel well, cut the inner and outer CV boots, then slide the shaft all the way inboard towards the diff. Rotate the head of the shaft out of the outer race, then pull the entire shaft out. Repeat for the other side. You have to replace the CV boots, but you'll save a ton on towing!
I snapped both front CV axles going up SlickRock in Tellico one time. I got to the top (by winching over the last ridge at the top) and pulled both shafts. This allows the inner joint/spindle to keep the diff sealed, and the outer spindle supports the wheel bearings. You can drive anywhere you want for as long as you want w/o damage - you're just stuck w/ 2WD.

I been saying it all along scuba he should torch the ifs.
But as Avy explains: He wants to have the most bad arse ISF out there. He was talking about some portals awhile back, adapting a LC front axle so it remains all toy, etc.
Hell with it torch it off and run a D44 up front. They are stronger the IFS at least. that or gonna have to shorten a D60.

Second, yes, if I did an sas I wanted to use volvo C303 portal axles, but it might be comin down to a Dana 44 or toy axle really soon.
I am not going to throw a locker in an ifs diff unless it was selectable.

to answer your gearing question...3rd gen 4runners with elockers came with 4.30 gears, non elocked 6cyl 3rd gens came with 4.10 gears, 4cyl 3rd gen runners came with 4.56 gears, tacos with elockers came with 4.10s not sure if they also came with 4.30s. and IIRC toyota threw a 3.90 or 3.83ish type gear in the mix with these as well, maybe in a prerunner....
your diff explosion looks exactly like mine did. i drove home 3 hrs with it broke though....dangerous? yes! :D these front diffs explode due to being open and spinning like crazy as we try to get up rocks, but if we lock it, the axles go boom....cant win unless you sas

Silly spider gears.. who needs them. If it were me, I'd just get another junkyard front diff or get one from someone else that is currently doing a SAS. But when you grenade a second diff or break 4 cv's you are required by law to put a solid axle under the truck.

Got a question, do gears from a non locked diff fit in a locked diff?
Avy, as in "Can I swap the ring and pinion over to my 8" third?" then the answer would be "Yes".
Now, as far as using the entire un-locked third, well, the thing there is the left side would be missing the edging that would cover the notch the actuator goes into. Make sense?
[Note: The following bit is only "Rumor" everyone, understand me here! ;)]
BTW..as far as the toughbook, just wait until they eventually release the mac compatible software for TIS. :wrenchin: Now, that'll be really sweet, I've personally never really liked or been overtly fond of the Panasonic/PC system.
Then there's the "pending" MacBook Mil-Spec. Food for thought.

Obi..
04-30-2010, 12:58 AM
OK, crap..hang on a sec since I can't remember how your build is. If you have an old front yeah, just swap the ring and pinion, but if it's a spare rear, then no b/c IIRC your front IFS is 7.5" and the rear is a 8". I do wonder how easy it would be to use the 03+ 4Runner/Tacoma 8" IFS diff though since you're already a drivers side drop. Just saying, as someone already mentioned the used front diff bit, maybe grab a newer 8" front w/ 4.56 or 4.88 and a used 8" ring/pinion at the same time? Kill two birds with one stone. :wrenchin:
FWIW, just break out a credit card and buy a set or a used front diff and save the headache, or just break apart the driveshafts and roll in 2wd until funds become available. BTDT.

I just want to take the ring and pinion form my unlocked 3rd and put them in my locked third so I can also throw my old front 3rd in
That should be feasible - the ring and pinion that I got for my elocker were just standard V6 gears, nothing special or unique about them. Just make sure you mark the ring to get your pattern and measure backlash before you take it apart because you're going to want as near to the same pattern in the elocker as what you had before (since they wore together that way)

Oh I figured as much lol!
The Avalon I am working on has a dead gauge cluster and the IS250 has a code for the oil pump for the VVTi which I think is a bad connection at the ecu since the thing has been t-pinned to death.
The Avalon is a fault the program put in and has forgotten how to fix so inamorata trying to get that squared away too.
I am trying to go through most of the cars we have and see what issues I cam fix in them since most of them already have other switches in place for faults. Figured I would get more experience fixing the stuff the program didn't put in then the stuff that eveyone is going to be learning.
After those guys are fixed I am goin to pull the GS450h and the sienna and see what issues they have.
