View Full Version : ScubaFab Tacoma rear bumper

So after getting rear ended the other day I jump started the rear bumper build.

The plans : 4X2 for the main body, 2X2 for fender wrap around, 1.5X1.5 for the bed side and tail light protection. All of it is in the 3/16th's-1/4" flavor. I don't do tube, square is easy to work with.

It's all remnant and will be stripped before final welding/ paint.

The mounts look something like this, using existing holes to bolt to the frame.

^^ Most of the welds look a bit better then that. I do not tout the ability of my 110V/135A flux core welder anymore. I used to just not know how to weld and not know how to dile in the settings, but I've basically got it down now

I will update with, updates as it comes along.

Looking good scuba. Did you get anything from the accident?

Really ? :hillbill:

You'd have to cut your bedsides. And I'm into this one about 80 bucks for materials and I ran out of welding wire so that was another 45. Plus probably 30 for cutoff wheels and such.

But I know your kidding.

I know it looks weird under the Pside light but it is because the bed is pushed in and forming some illusion

I looooove that bumper. It's from Sonoran. Too bad he wants my truck for 2 weeks to build it, and he lives in Arizona.

Armorology gets my vote for second place, but they also want my truck for a week or two, and they're in Colorado

Ahh yes, the wraps minus the high clearancing. Only thing is, bracing that would be a PITA.

Got the wrap arounds on
http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a168/Sycosurfer150/Truck/Rear%20bumper/IMG_0894.jpg

They stick out a little, But I needed that so that I can fit all of the 1.5X1.5 on the top of the 2x2 for the bedside protection.

More to come soon

Nice... Gonna tie it into the sliders? Like over the fender? Shouldn't be that tough to find someone to make some long bends like those in some tubing for cheap...

The bumper is coming together (I know my PB is screwed, give me time please) but here are a couple progress pics..

Some people have mentioned to move the wings in cause they stick out, but after almost laying the truck over and having my bumper side wings and sliders keep me upright, they'll stay where they're at.

Slowly but surely....

Tapered the ends, Gonna be a PITA to cap, but oh well.
http://img571.imageshack.us/img571/9784/img0934i.jpg

Ground down some of the wing support welds and gave em another pass..
http://img340.imageshack.us/img340/3184/img0933m.jpg

Capped the ends for the 45* on the side wings
http://img692.imageshack.us/img692/1086/img0935ts.jpg

Here's how she sits. I will end up throwing some triangulation between the end of the side wing and the support that is there now.

Got the caps on the tapers from the 2x4-2x2, and also capped the side wing ends, so basically she's fully capped now..

Don't mind the dirty garage floor, I swept up when I was done today.

First thing this morning when I got out there I found a little square piece of scrap, and what do you know if fit perfectly in this awkward angle.

The taper cap

Bolted back up
http://img341.imageshack.us/img341/1393/img0943mg.jpg

So basically now that its all capped off I can start on the bedside protection. Originally I was going to go all the way to the top of the tail lights but I think I'm going to now go as high as just above the back up lights, or just under.
We'll see.

I would drop it so it covers the back up light instead of the turn signal. You will be less likely to have the cops mess with you. just my .02

Scuba
05-24-2010, 05:22 PM
You can still see the turn signals blink from all sides.. I'm not too worried about it..

CJM
05-24-2010, 09:09 PM
Id drop it or make it higher man, it totally blocks the signal imho.

How many passes did it take to fill that gap where the angled piece meets the top of the "hoop"? The welds will suffer if the gap is too big. I'd lower it too. Seems like a rock could easily get in there.

Can you still remove the light to changes bulbs if need be?

I'd have to pull the 4 bolts for the bumper, at that point the thing kind of falls backwards but stays on the truck. I can change them out like that. Won't be a biggie.

1. It filled in nicely.

I haven't updated this in a while..
I chopped off the square side protection and got some tube bent up...

I went to Jason's (Roctac) house last night and got the tube side protection bent up. He said it was practice for him.. I brought the beer.. And Scott (speedsg) came and helped out.
Big thanks to the both of them :kewl:

We left a little room so I can cut the bumper for 35's.

I think have just enough room to add one of these right behind the taillight
http://bluetorchfab.com/store/images/pirategusset2.jpg

I still have to add a hitch and some extra side support. (Longest drawn out bumper build ever..I know)
So stay tuned.

This thing called mud. It detracts from over all traction on the trail. Over all, it sucks and is a PITA to clean.

The wheelin was fun though ;)
