Alright lets get this thread up so we can start planning our annual Big Bear campout! The camp spot is still up in the air. We can camp where we usually camp or we can try a camp ground. Anthony is willing to get us a propane fire pit which is legal to use from what I can tell. I will update this post as the details get settled. I will bring my BBQ so anyone can use it to cook. We can pot luck it saturday night. Hopefully the usual suspect will be attending so we can have some great shenanigans as always

Some Highlights we will be able to look forward to:

MarcP will complain about scratching his rig.
Lance and I will be doing a HIGH CENTER demonsration!
Tool pimp Tony might be on hand to tell us we are a bunch of P&^ssies.
Andy will most likely put something :gay: on someones rig.

Im sure there will be more. So get on the list This is always a very good time :asshat:

CRab flats campground is the spot so reserve your spot now

I might bring my 84 out, with a few other tacos! Count me in for now. I just need to re-build the rear brake drums and re-build the Carburetor. Anyone good at rebuilding them carbs? I could use some help.

Sorry its been a while since I have come around. My taco is in storage in AZ, and my 84 is all I got for wheelin right now. Also lost my job last year, and moved to a new place, but now that I am back on my feet and got my job back, I can focus on living a little :)

thanks for bumping the thread, it was the motivation i needed to post up here.

we just spent some time up in big bear (full report to come soon) and traveled over to the usual camp site for a few reasons, one being to check it out and see the conditions. when we pulled up, we found this:
http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae38/hamiltonfabrication/Big%20Bear%20June%202010/338.jpg
http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae38/hamiltonfabrication/Big%20Bear%20June%202010/339.jpg

RATS! FOILED AGAIN!

the other two entrances look like this:
http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae38/hamiltonfabrication/Big%20Bear%20June%202010/340.jpg
http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae38/hamiltonfabrication/Big%20Bear%20June%202010/341.jpg

so looks like we are to find a new place to camp. any suggestions? i was looking at the group camp options and i kind of like that. there are a few that are pretty centrally located to our trails. let me know what you guys think, i have no problem handing all of it, and we will all split the cost evenly on a per vehicle basis.

21- 29 are all right next to each other and available if this is ok we can start booking asap and have a uy camp only... fires too. All the group camps are either booked or a long way from the trails! Sean you got some local knowledge have you seen any of the group camps? can you fit a couple of trailers in there or are they just for cars?

wifesaysimadumbass

Crinale

wifesaysimadumbass
06-29-2010, 07:51 AM
tanglewood group camp is available it is at the top of van dusen and has room for 40 people and FIRES.... 25 ft driveway just means trailer trash will need to unhitch but im assuming there will be enough parking.

Seanz0rz
06-29-2010, 09:00 AM
tanglewood is the one i was thinking of. i havent seen it in person, but i was going to get a list of possible sites and go up and check them out, maybe on monday (depending on work, etc.) id really like to stitch my gas tank skid back together before i go up there again, since im not sure the conditions of the roads, and you never know. i will take lots of pictures and some measurements. mikey, what is the turning radius of the dodge? it can be any wider than my dad's superduty crewcab longbed, and he makes it on a 4 lane street pretty well.

wifesaysimadumbass
06-29-2010, 01:17 PM
yeah it's probably that size I can always back in and unhitch too. Marc said hes seen that spot and it's huge so maybe you can skip the ride, but if you want to go I wont stop you

Seanz0rz
06-29-2010, 06:32 PM
ok, if anyone has any other spots, give me some lat, lon or other directions, and let me know. i think ill make a trip as early as thursday. im also going to do some research tonight on the internet and get as much info as i can about the different places.

Seanz0rz
06-29-2010, 07:23 PM
looks like tanglewood is max 8 vehicles. this includes your tow vehicles i guess.

so question is, how many people are we planning for? can we get a somewhat accurate vehicle count? ill go through the thread and count, and post up in this post.

i have a rough count of i think 12 (people talking caused me to lose count) vehicles. figuring in the normal drop rate, thats still about 10.

4x4mike
06-29-2010, 09:19 PM
10? As Red Foreman from that 70's show would say, "This calls for 8 rounds of bare knuckle boxing."

Seanz0rz

group camp sites are only 1 campsite.

maybe better off just booking up crab flats. just trying to save us some monies. im pretty sure there is no camphost at tanglewood, so im wondering how they enforce the 8 vehicle rule.

anyone know of any other primitive spots?

freejake3
06-30-2010, 08:32 PM
F-it. Whoever arrives after the eight count should just primitive camp adjacent to Tanglewood. Loking at the Google Earth view; it's showing plenty of prmitive spots within spitting distance. I say book the site Sean and let the boys with trailers and yourself have the spot and then rest of us can fend for ourselves. But as you said.....whose really counting. I can hear it now "...yes sir,....these other 5 vehicles are just my friends.....they've come up here to wheel for the day."

Also looks like there may be a nice primitive spot just northeast of Holcomb Valley Campground. Look for the pond to the west of HVC and go north 400 yards. It would fit plenty of vehicles.

I usually use UTM's. This is NAD 27. 509414mE 3796448mN. That's for the site above HVCampground. I guess for Tanglewood just scope it out. Thanks heaps.

I like the idea of just booking up crab flats. the thing that sucks about primitive camping is you can scope out all the spots you want but if people beat you to it then you are back looking for another spot. crab flats will cost more but we know we have a place and we can have a fire.

freejake3
07-01-2010, 11:33 AM

here is the link to book:
http://www.recreation.gov/camping/Crab_Flats_Ca/r/campgroundDetails.do?page=details&contractCode=NRSO&parkId=70790&topTabIndex=CampingSpot

select the 13th of august (if that is the day you plan on showing up) and input 2 for the length of stay. this will book you for friday, saturday night, you will leave on sunday morning.

45 dollars for 2 nights plus the "reservation fee" of 9 dollars. not too bad!

08-04-2010, 10:28 PM
the time i get out there friday depends on my schedule on thursday... if i work early i'll probably try to drive down to Anaheim to stay with my dad for the night, then have a shorter drive to Big Bear Friday, and will probably get there around 2ish... otherwise, itll be traffic dependent since im driving from the central coast, towing my rig.

Either way, W00T BIG BEAR! I am down to run whatever the heck anybody wants... i have plenty of lift, locked, and i have sliders now. I've never wheeled anything in Big Bear, so anything is cool with me, im not picky (I'll wheel as hard or easy as anyone wants)

Seanz0rz
08-09-2010, 08:44 AM
good with the trails, i just dont want to end up on my roof or side or doors or anything else except the wheels.

dishpan west to east i think would be a really good run. probably a little more challenging than east to west, but i think a little bit safer in some regards, and more fun. we are kind of in the middle of the mountain, with john bull way off to the east and dishpan close to the west, so we can really pick any trails we want. two of those i havent heard of. can you post up more info? road numbers, trail descriptions, etc.

food, not sure what to bring. both dad and i are special diet folks these days, but ill certainly pitch something in to the potluck and we might pick around a bit. if there is something you want me to bring, just let me know.

troyboy162
08-10-2010, 01:51 AM
gold mtn then john bull is the standard run up there. both will make you think a bit on 33". sliders recommended and rear locker is helpful

John Bull to Dishpan sounds like a good combo to me :-D I wanna see this "waterfall" obstacle in person, the pictures all look different, some angles make it look super easy, and others make it look like a small cliff, lol. And Bull sounds like a fun challenging trail. Unless anyone has any objections i say this is our route. especially since one end of Dishpan pretty much dumps out in our campsite.

Ok, so I just got back into town and finalized my plans for the weekend. I'm heading up Friday morning and sticking around until Sunday afternoon (I have to get home, or at least to a sports bar for the Chargers game!). I still need to reserve a campsite, but I'll do that while at work in the morning. Not sure what I'm bring to the potluck since I can't cook, but I'll figure something out. I'm planning on wheeling most of Friday and Saturday. As long as I hit John Bull, Gold Mountain and Dishpan in at least one direction each, I'll be happy. I can't wait!

troyboy162
08-11-2010, 02:08 AM
your gonna want to hit john bull after dishpan since you can not get to dishpans start without going down it backwards or airing up and hitting the road. those two trails are pretty far apart but easily doable in a day if the herd is moving well. i have most of the trails up there in google earth format if you need them for planing

im watching how this all pans out and would like to link up with you guys for a day trip

dishpan is totaly fun. if you start far enough out into the lake arrowhead area on your way to dish you get to cross deep creek. sometimes it is 3/4's of a tire deep.

motino wash (sidewinder) is a good one too but its a whole lot of challenge for average trucks.

I'm going to try and crash this party so long as there's a free spot for me to crash! Sorry I didn't rsvp a site cuz I wasn't sure I could make it due to a conflicting schedule.

I worked on the ol bastard all night yesterday doing some repairs from the damage sustained on my trip back in April with slosurfer. Apparently going close to 100mph on dirt + jumping does a number on the pos. I still have to redo my alignment cuz my front driver side is all jacked up so if I can get that straightened enough so it's not wearing the tire out like crazy I'll be driving up Friday night and arrive around midnight at the earliest. I've got gps coordinates so I should be good.

I'm with Mikey on John Bull. Done it enough that I don't care for it so I don't mind sticking around and hanging and meet everyone at the exit point so I can just relax in the morning and not be rushed :) At any rate it'll be majority rule with me so I'm cool with whatever.

Btw you will not need your adventure pass this weekend!!!

"Back to School" fee-free weekend promo (http://fs.usda.gov/wps/portal/fsinternet/!ut/p/c4/04_SB8K8xLLM9MSSzPy8xBz9CP0os3gjAwhwtDDw9_AI8zPyhQ oY6BdkOyoCAGixyPg!/?ss=110512&navtype=BROWSEBYSUBJECT&cid=STELPRDB5190862&navid=180000000000000&pnavid=null&position=News&ttype=detail&pname=San%20Bernardino%20National%20Forest-%20News%20&%20Events)

August 14 and 15 is a “Back to School” fee-free weekend so no passes are required. We'll still need to pay for the camp site but at least we won't need the adventure pass to be in the NF.

I'll post up after I get my alignment fixed tonight to confirm. :chair:

He'll be a ton happier if he scratches his bumpers instead of his doors like he did two years ago...

haha yeah doors are no fun but hes got the cleanest bumpers ive ever seen. you need to feed those things rocks from time to time, or they leave you for a FJC at Best Buy hahah

the front bumper has a ton of rock rash on the lower edge from a couple of years ago.

the rear bumper, i havent had a chance to scratch it, other than working on it. plus, the point was to put it high enough up so i didnt hit it on EVERYTHING!

4link and tank? whatcha talkin about willis! I got rid of that thing a long time ago! I'm running IRS w/ the stock tank now :P hahahaha

jk

Ok so I think I dialed in the alignment but I'm not sure how exact it was since I was just eyeballing everything and using the old school method of doing everything by hand. No cool gadgets here to align the wheels so hopefully I won't tear up the tires on the way up to bb! I just drove it up and down the street in front of my office and everything appeared to be smooth so I'm 99% ready. Just need to drive it from Irvine to LA tomorrow to go to my other office to make sure it doesn't fall apart. If you see some crazy crash on the news on the 405/605 freeway then you know something bad happened! haha

cya guys tomorrow night! anyone got a spare spot for me to crash tomorrow night? :)

I am pretty much packed up...super easy since I am coming solo. I am going to get off work a little early, so hopefully I will be on the road before 6.
