Some of y'all are aware of my lifelong affair and only guilty pleasure with firearms. Back in 1996 HK developed a super USP .45 for the military AKA the Mark 23 (civilian version). It is the only offensive handgun created. I immediately lusted in my heart for one. At over 2000.00 dollars for the base kit, I choked and waited until late 2001 when I could better afford one.

Since that initial purchase I knew I would eventually want to acquire the whole kit which included an Insight Tech Laser Aiming Module and a Knights Armament sound suppressor; each of which proved to be both expensive and elusive. Yesterday, after nearly ten years of procratination and delay I finally picked up the final component...the Knights Arms suppressor.

The laser module was purchased just as Insight was discontinuing production. The suppressor being a class III item comes with it's own obstacles let alone that Knights is a military contractor and for the past 10 years has been focused on war production; only doing intermittent civilian fulfillment. Which makes waiting even more intolerable. I ordered my suppressor in Apr. 08. It was delivered to my class III FFL in Aug/Sept 09 and the tax stamp was issued in Feb '10. I didn't get the message until yesterday. Now for some gun pr0n...

Gun party in Utah? I'm in!!!! I'll let y'all play with mine if I can play with yours...Hehe. It is a shame, given our constitutional recogition of God given freedom to own such things, that our govt. reasons it has control to limit or at least obstruct that freedom; although most of that wait time was my own procrastination and Knight's civilian production cycles.

...and Sean, if you have a girlfriend that appreciates HKs, What are you waiting for? SHE'S A KEEPER!!!! Marry her already! Hehe...or at least bring her along to the Utah gun party :D

Anyway, thanks guys. Lately, I've been refining my collection by selling off the firearms that for one reason or another, have fallen from grace and am focusing on quality and collectability rather than volume. The models I have left are the truly quality and collectable examples.

Sometimes, as with my LAR Grizzly, they are out of production and parts/components are hard to find. It can literally take years to locate what I need. Yesterday, I found a rare caliber conversion kit for the Grizzly. It is the final kit to complete that collection. It's as rare as it is odd. LAR manufacturing went experimental in the late 1980s and early '90s. They developed a 1911 style match grade pistol "on steroids" in 45 Winchester Magnum. It is truly a fine magnum with 4 available conversion kits: .357 Rem Magnum, 10mm, .45 acp and the proprietary 357/45 Grizzly Win Mag. The 357/45 GWM was the kit I just bought to complete that collection. I have been working on that for 6 years now. It's prolly asking too much, but I hear there is at least one more experimental conversion kit in 9mm Winchester Magnumthat was never in production, but there did exist a few. Maybe someday one of those will pop up. I'm not holding my breath though.

So unexpectedly, after all these years, two of my project guns have been finished in one week. NEXT! :D

So I had a few hours today to give it a whirl. I drove up to an outdoor range where I usually scrounge brass on Sunday afternoons. It was raining so I was the only one there and was able to fire without hearing protection. I didn't know what to expect since I had never been around suppressed fire before. After the first shot I couldn't resist checking the end cap to see if I had a cap strike as some others have had. No strike, so I took a few more shots.

I was surprised at how the suppressor suppressed and changed the sound. It didn't sound like gunfire. It was more of a clicking sound like tapping a hammer on plastic. I've been shooting firearms since I was 10 so there isn't much that's new to me. I'll admit right now that I was grinning ear to ear while I emptied the three mags I brought. If I may be so crass, it was like doing something naughty to spice up a decades old monogamous sex life...

Turns out I didn't need to index it for point of impact. The POI didn't seem to change with the suppressor in place. I'll know for sure when I take it to the indoor range. Won't get time for that for two more weeks I'm afraid. Anyway, thanks for all the comments and interest. This is likely the end of the line for this kit for a while.

Dang man, that's awesome! I finally got to the range and found that skills fade, but not as fast as I was expecting! I need to get out more often, and I need to get a few suppressors. I'm thinking 10mm, .22lr, 5.56, and 7.62 would do the trick....

Me too! But then again, I figure when the zombie apocolypse hits, I'll just raid the gun store. :) Till then it will be hand to hand combat and running them over with vehicles. :) I usually have enough empty beer bottles, gasoline, and rags, that I can fend them off with Molotov cocktails too.

Running over them with vehicles sounds much funner than shooting them. I should add some of those spiked ice tires to my list of zombie weapons to buy. :D

You guys should really read more, fire and vehicles and definitely hand to hand combat are all VERY subpar and relatively poor choices when considering zombie warfare....

It's a pretty decent book. I just figure with zombies, just like socialist presidents, you should prepare ahead of time, by the time it comes that you NEED a gun, its already to late.

I'm still working on which optic and reticle option to get. So far I'm about settled on a Trijicon ACOG green chevron and BDC but my stock sits a bit low for proper eye alignment. May have to swap the stock out... Still researching options for that. Have about resolved the issue with my bipod choice and the Sig bayonet lug conflict. On these 556's, the bayonet lug prevents any picatinny component from removal by sliding it off the rail. To remove any sliding component, the user has to disassemble the forend; whichis annoying becasue to do that, he must first tap a roll pin out and separate the two forend halves by prying at the trunion thingy. Sucks!

I want an easily removable bipod so I have to use a rail riser to elevate the bottom rail plane by 1/4 inch. Then I can slide the bipod off. I found a riser made by GG&G in AZ., but it interferes with another component. I may have to modify it.

Anyway that's my Sig 556 swat project... with all of the issues, it may be a while before I can complete this build.

I have considered that one. I tried it on another rifle I have. I want the rail grabber feature of that one combined with the stability and durability of the GG&G extreme duty bipod.

Hate to break it to all of you, but from a purely tactical standpoint, if you're not bringing much to the party in case of zombie apocalypse or social collapse, I wouldn't expect many people to let you move in.
Fuster don't want no extra mouths to feed... 'specially mouths that showed up with no gun. :)
