The 8th annual 2010 Pismo Jamboree dates has been set!!! Come check us out on September 24-26, 2010 at Pismo Beach, CA

Get there!

http://pismojamboree.com

I'll update and add more to this post later, but I'm starting to get going on this and figured it was time to start a discussion about it.

Who's coming and what are you looking forward to or would like to see at this year's event?

i will be there with alexus and another friend. probably dragging dan up there as well! i think my parents might follow us up in their car and just spend the day on the beach.

im looking forward to napping in my hammock.

also looking forward to doing the gps challenge. a photo contest would be really cool, with categories for point and shoot and dslr cameras from each of the gps points. something that could be submitted after the event and voted on by us.

Sean, great idea!

One of the problems we've had is trying to round up the good pictures after the event. A photo contest that is done after the event would be awesome!

With School and the Condition of the Truck, Looks like the only way I would make it out there is if I score a job and move out there by the end of the summer, which isn't looking to likely at the moment :-(

hope im home for this! it was a great time last year and perfect to get us out of the rocks for a bit.

i think we set the standard last year on the gps challenge lol. anyone got one of those fancy new garmins? i think those could give google earth a run for its money.

I might be getting a GPS for my birthday this year, bout time I be able to find a trail head by myself.

I'll be there for sure, 3rd year in a row :)
Can't wait for the GPS challenge again, it and the clam chowder is what I look forward to. :)

We will definitely try. I was going to drive the 4runner back to Chicago in July and SAS it so if I do we will likely need to see if someone has two extra seats but those bridges can be crossed at a much later date.

I'm definately going to try and make it again this year. I've got the ok from the boss, and so far, airfare isn't looking too bad. Only thing that may keep me from going is if I land a different job. Unless the job is out there. :D

I'm about 90% sure I'll be there. Can't wait.

oh, just a reminder to EVERYONE PLANNING TO DRIVE ON THE DUNES:

all vehicles driving east of the main camping area NEED FLAGS. its a new law they passed this year. Just remindin all of you so you have time to build or buy flag mounts.

The California State Parks Off-Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation Division has received approval from the Office of Administrative Law for revisions to the safety regulations for Oceano Dunes SVRA. The new regulations took effect on January 1, 2010.

The regulation now requires a whip and flag for all vehicles in the dunes. This requirement is consistent with the regulations for Dumont Dunes and Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Areas, which are popular areas managed by the Bureau of Land Management.

Ok. I guess this is a little off topic but has anyone else noticed that the beach has gotten narrower over the past two years after Pole 2? I remember camping in 2007 and having to walk almost a 1/4 mile to the fenceline where the porta potty was. :headscratch:

Crinale
07-13-2010, 03:09 PM
the restricted areas that are fenced off change all the time... but i dont think it was ever that wide, unless it was a crazy low-tide...

partsman93274
07-13-2010, 07:33 PM
I know it was right before a storm surge that ran the water up till you had to travel the fenceline. Maybe it was a low tide from the storm. I tend to arrive right after a storm hits to watch the river swallow idiots in small cars that dont belong on the beach.

L33T35T Tacoma
07-13-2010, 09:54 PM
I don't remember seeing it that low and I visited quote frequently last year. On the contrary, at surf n turf last year the tide was so high there were points where you had to drive thru large quantities of water, and that's excluding the river that flows sometimes

Once again I have to travel for work so Pismo again. Plus, the 4runner blew a head gasket in the middle of no where on its way back to Chicago from San Diego a few weeks ago and severely drained my funds getting it fixed and back on the road... but that's another much more frustrating story for another day.

Have fun and take lots of pictures!

Just a question I have. How come this event wasnt planned for the first weekend of October when the birdie humping season is over and they open the beach up more? Also, since my memory is about as short as my........ um nevermind. Will the creek be flowing by the time this event takes place?

Crinale
08-06-2010, 01:06 AM
creek doesnt start flowing til it starts raining... if it rains september 21st then yes the creek will flow, otherwise, not likely.

And the dates are planned very carefully by the organizers to have as few conflicts as possible, and there is still plenty of dunes available for running before the plovers release their section to the public..

Lance, I'm actually arriving at LAX around 6pm on Sunday the 19th. My boss gave me the whole week off. :D The plan is to get a rental car and drive down to Winchester to visit my Uncle and his family for a couple days, then bring the rental car back. After that, I think I'll be staying with Sean and riding up with him and Alexus (If that is still OK with Sean). I'm going to try to visit a few other people while I'm in the area, but I haven't even contacted everybody yet.

I'll be glad to help in whatever way I can. Looking forward to it!

As far as the RV goes, I'll have to see how much it is this year. Sean offered to pack an extra tent, or I may pack a tent with me. Lance, I guess if you could PM me the cost of the RV, then I'll go from there and see whether or not I want to tent it this year. RV sure was nice though.

Thanks!

WEll, get to spreading the word! Start threads on whatever boards you frequent the most and are well respected on. With two kids and being gone 14hours each day and visiting inlaws every freaking weekend, I haven't had any time to do anything. Any help on other forums is greatly appreciated! point them to the website http://pismojamboree.com and point them to the picture thread from last year's event. PM Lance or I when someone on another forum committs to coming so it can be added to the attendee list on the website.

This goes for any other members who are willing to help (especially if you are a well respected member of another forum) as I don't have time to spend a couple hours a day spreading the word on other forums. PM me if you can help Thanks!

With your 3rz the nearly bald 33's will probably actually be better at the dunes than whatever 35's ur gonna get... you'll have slightly more power, and nearly bald or tight tread tires are the best on soft sand.

Hey Lance, those links are backwards. :hillbill:

Looks good! I have a stupid question about the toppings. It has a list of toppings (lettuce, mayo, etc), but how do we specify what toppings/condiments we want? Is/Will there be a way to do that?

Bummer no clam chowder though.

[edit - good times - fixed stupid links that were backwards!]

Yeah the chowder this year won't be an official item. If we get enough requests we may bring it back next year but for this year we'll stick with the sandwiches.

Eventually I'd like to be able to get one of those taco trucks to hook us up on the beach!!! I swear we've got some great taco trucks here and does some mean catering for parties!! :P

For those that haven't had one of Masa's sandwiches, you are in for a treat!! I had one a year ago (the simon special on dutch crunch) and I've been craving it everyday since then! The dutch crunch bread is amazing!

Also, I was getting really burned out on having to leave the beach (it would take about 2hours to do) and then having to play catchup and get the raffle going and night run, etc.... This way, I can still help with dinner but not have to leave the beach.

I'm sure that I and others though will be making splash cafe runs though for other meals that weekend.

Since I will have Javier one of my deli guys with me on Saturday we should be able to take your orders and get hot fresh sandwiches out very quick so you guys can just tell us what you want when you come to make your order.

no, you need an orange flag, 6"x12" here is more information: http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=25980

for us, we are required to have them in the dunes (but not the beach). ATV's are required to have them on the beach as well.

its some sort of compression fitting. the worst part is the two sections of whip are connected by this steel sleave that has too much weight to it.

As long as it ends up being more than 8' off the ground and is able to stand up on its own when you are stopped, then it's fine. YOu would still have to find a flag though, not sure if I've seen anyone just selling the orange flags on their own.

Whatever we end up selling will be something that will be legal to have out there and all you need. We are checking about having a small logo on the orange flag. I think they are more worried about it having a pattern and not being as visible, hence the wording they use.

If you're planning to camp for the weekend, you'll want to make sure you bring appropriate camping gear (i.e. chairs, tent, sleeping bag etc). As for exploring the dunes, basic tools, recovery gear, fire extinguishers etc are recommended.

Read more about what to bring here: Read me (http://www.pismojamboree.com/index.php/411/event-rule-book)

Other than that, if you want to try Roxie's Deli and Market's awesome sandwiches, make sure to pre-order here (http://www.pismojamboree.com/index.php/store?page=shop.browse&category_id=4&Treeid=5). You'll also need a safety whip which will be available later this week click here (http://www.pismojamboree.com/index.php/store?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.tpl&product_id=31&category_id=6). All pre-orders can be paid either via paypal immediately or onsite at the event. :)

A few more weeks out!

Thanks! Placed orders for both. So we can get to the campsite without the whips, right? We just need them to go out into the dunes?

In 2007 I bought a flag there that had 2 flags on the whip.

And that's where you broke quite a few items that weekend! :P which then lead to you buyin the 4runner :D

Only thing I broke was a PA speaker the entire weekend. Truck worked like a champ. Actually i showed up with an oil leak and enough sand globbed up on it it plugged.

At the moment the orange flag will just be the plane jane orange flags complete with whip and the bolt on the bottom. As soon as the printers get back to me I'll have confirmation on we'll be able to add the logo or add another flag below it with the UY logo.

In the meantime I've added the standard safety whip flag on the storefront so feel free to pick one up from us.

Note that you do not need the whip to be on the beach. Once you leave the beach and enter the dunes, you'll be required to have a safety whip on your vehicle so if you forget to get one before entering the beach, we'll have ample safety whips available for purchase onsite. I'll try to make sure we have extra zip ties and drills to make holes on whatever you guys want for mounting the flags.

A quick way to mount flags w/o permanent damages to your vehicle:

Pick Ups - use the tailgate and just jam the safety whip between the bed and the tailgate. Works effectively with no damages anywhere!

SUVs - Use the rear passenger windows (driver or passenger) and then run the flag pole thru there. Just make sure you either zip tie the pole on the inside to keep it steady. Also not a permanent thing so no damages anywhere!

Cool, will pick up a flag there. I have a 3' CB antenna on top, so if I attach it to that I'll meet their 8' min.

My sister lives in Santa Maria, so I won't be camping, but really looking forward to it. Any news of a NorCal caravan?

Uh, you have to camp on the beach. It's part of the entire experience. If you leave you'll miss out on the night run. Pack a sleeping bag and sleep in your vehicle.

Got your email and replied back. The day pass is good until 11pm and then they can give you a ticket ($230 last time I checked), camping passes are $10. Sometimes when I go meet people out there but don't want to camp, I'll pay the $10 and then I don't have to worry about leaving by a certain time (11pm can come really quick if you are having fun or someone breaks down on a night run. I think our last night run took over 2hrs and we left camp after 9pm. If I were you, that's what I would do for Saturday and throw a sleeping bag in your 4runner just in case. :)

Most of the things there apply, but some of the safety equipment isn't needed in every vehicle. As long as someone in your group when you go out in the dunes has it. Believe me, you don't want to be out there and no one in your little group has a snatch strap....

Okay, here's the deal on the flags......

The actual "store" should be updated tonight or tomorrow

The 8ft. 5/16" thick poles with mounting bolt, washers, etc with the regulation orange triangle safety flag will be $10 (The triangle flag has no logos or writing on it per the regulations at the dunes and other OHV parks)

We also will have rectangle flags with the UY logo that you can add to your whip under the orange safety flag. It should slide on most any whip or cb antenna and will include zip ties to secure it.

So, there's a how-to clinic at Hollister Hills this weekend (18th). I'm tempted but I don't want to overload myself with too much info / excitement with the Jamboree coming up. Will there be clinics and the like at the Jamboree or will it just be whenever someone gets stuck?

I've done a fair amount of trail driving, but never really anything too technical. Am I just freaking myself out?

If I don't go to the clinic there will be one this spring, so I could always go then.

You'll be fine. Driving around on the dunes isn't all that technical. It's just common sense stuff--watch out for other people and don't get too off camber. You can avoid the areas you don't feel confortable with. It's easy. Last year there was a mom and daughter out there for the first time, and they did fine.

Air down your tires and either make sure you have a tow strap, or be with somebody that has one. A shovel would be a good idea too. You will get stuck....it's part of the fun.
