Doing the brakes and rotors on the 4runner and then the van. I was wondering what everyone likes, dislikes, etc....
I picked up Duralast Rotors and Duralast Gold ceramic pads because they were in stock, but now I'm second guessing that and don't mind if this takes me a little longer to get done. (took me a few days to get the right spindle socket, forgot to get new inner hub seals, and the gaskets for the manual hubs, so I have to wait for that anyways)
Let me know what you like dislike and keep it just to rotors and pads (we've got other threads for the other brake swap upgrades).

i have hawk suv pads on my tundra brake swap. other than dusting pretty bad (doesnt matter to me on my usually dirty truck and black wheels) they have been excellent pads and have taken my truck and fully loaded trailer from 65-0 very quickly with only a small burning smell :)
i also have brembo rotors, very nice, not much to say about it.
i recommend both highly. i have nothing to compare them to but my old, warped stock setup. i ordered them from tire rack in 07 and installed them early in 08. been very very good to me so far.

interesting that you ask that now. i was about to purchase pads myself and everything my parts information databases give me say oe is organic. ceramic may be my choice though due to hauling a tent trailer. i know ceramics work even better when hot just like the carbon metallic pads. just depends on what your driving habits are. previous owner put organics on my 4runner and they are done after only 9,000 miles but i blame alot of trailer towing and mountain driving even using the trans to help slow it down. hopefully these ceramics last longer.

I would get either OEM or Hawk pads (because Sean says they're good). I've got some OEM pads in my 4Runner waiting for me to put on, but I forgot to buy the anti-squeal thingies. I'll be getting Brembo rotors when I decide to tear apart my front end.
A shop supposedly put new rotors and pads on my 4Runner back about 5 years ago, but since they only charged me $40, I don't think they actually did do the rotors. I dunno. Whatever they did with the rotors didn't last but 2 weeks till they warped again. Anyways, the rotors they supposedly put on were just from some cheap auto parts store. The pads they put on have lasted me about 5 years, and they just started making some noise about a month ago.
Anyways, just my $.02.

You guys who are getting Brembo rotors.... are you getting the regular ones?
Edit: Oops, I meant rotors not pads

Whatever you do, skip anything crossdrilled - if you want bling rotors that work, get PowerSlots. I'm running ceramic pads and they do seem to work better once they warm up a bit, don't seem to grab as well on the first few stops.

I'm going OEM on the pads, but yeah, I'll be getting regular Brembo rotors. No crossdrilled or slotted. Tirerack has them for $45 each.

I just installed rotors and pads on both stepdads 4Runner and mine.
My 4Runner got slotted brembo rotors and some ceramic pad from carquest.
Stepdad's 4Runner got blank brembo rotors and the hawk lts pads.
Honestly the only difference I can tell between the two is dust.
Performance wise both trucks stop beautifully, and stepdad's 4Runner is still on stock 4Runner brakes compared to mine on Tundra upgrades.
If I go to do brakes again I will be using what ever brand ceramic I can get.
They are stopping stepdads 4Runner, My 4Runner and moms Lexus beautifully.
OEM on the top end Toyota's and all Lexus are ceramic for the fact of minimal dust (luxury always has to look good) but performance wise, they have stopped me just fine.
The only thing I can say about ceramic pads is for the first few mins your car/truck doesnt stop to well cause they need to heat up.
I have been quite happy with brembo rotors and hawk lts pads, been stopping the T100 great considering the rear shoes on one side are bathing in gear oil (no I cant get it to stop leaking!).

same problem here with one drum getting wet in gear oil. maybe i wont attempt to reseal it and just give it a bath in brakleen once a month.

I love brembo and hawk, and yadda yadda yadda.
I have more free time than free money, so I run the cheap duralast lifetime warranty brake pads from Auto Zone. I know, go ahead and flame. I've never had an issue, they stop beautifully (even with a fully loaded 84 and trailer behind me) and they dont dust any worse than anything else out there.
I have to change them every 20,000 miles or so, but so what, once you purchase them the first time they are free for ever, and changing toyota brakes takes about 10 minutes... Like I said, I do the work more often, but its cheaper, and performance wise have had 0 issues.

Chris,, well I might even do you one better. I might have to do vatozone pads and rotors. :gay: They're already in the garage, so I might just go ahead and use them. :) I"ll report back on how bad or not bad they are....
