Saw this thread on YT and thought I'd give the GPS mount a shot.

Here in cali I'm pretty sure the windshield mounts are illegal plus I just don't like the looks of em. Not to mention they are eye candy for a thief. So I ordered up the VSM (Vehicle specific mount) from Pro-fit and the garmin nuvi adapter.

Here's the website : http://www.pro-fit-intl.com/index.html

And some pictures of my mount in my 99 Tacoma.

Need less to say I LOVE the mount. It leaves the GPS in the perfect spot for vision and its not far from touch either. I just can't wait until I ditch this Nuvi 200 and get a newer Garmin with some Topo maps.

Is that an old GPS mount behind it? Your mount looks nice and solid. I don't care for the windshield mounts either so I looked into something else. I've got something similar to you. It's a 4runner specific mount with a Nuvi. There are threads online regarding installing topos on a Nuvi. You need a model with an SD slot and the uploaded maps. I've got it all saved on my home computer but haven't gotten around to installing it yet.

Here is my mount. The power cable is hardwired and comes out of the vent.

I've been looking for a place to put mine; I like that mounting spot a lot better than this one (although it's a creative idea):

Mike, is yours mounted to the fins of the vent or does it clip around it? My Sirius is setup in a similar fashion, but it mounts to the vent fins and tends to bounce around a lot.

No that's my bluetooth you see behind it.
I've been researching GPSs's'ss ??? and am most likely going to go with a crossover unit like a nuvi, ~$200-$300 dollar range that allows for topo maps. I'm actually downloading this topo on my SD card right now.. Just experimenting with it really.

The Nuvi I have is SO old. It's a 200 model. BTW what model doesn't have an SD card reader now a days ?

Oh, and your mount is cool and all, but it looks like a HUGE vent blocker. :P

The proclip clips onto the dash bezel and is very solid. It can be removed pretty easy without tools or removing the bezel. I just bought a second Garmin mount and mounted it to the proclip (on an angled piece of plastic so it faces me). My vent is left free to be adjusted.

Let me know how the files work. Those are the ones I downloaded but haven't done anything with. I think I remember trying to load them on but the Nuvi doesn't open them.

Mine isn't too much of a vent blocker. The fact that that it is not on the windshield or in the way of me or my passengers out weighs the placement. The vent is istill operational and adjustable. If I really needed to I could slide it over the clock for more air if the other vents aren't enough.

I don't have XP so not being able to run one of the garmin apps killed the sitch. I may try to hook up our old desktop and see if I can get it working.

Yeah a good navigation unit is something that's well over due for me. I have recently collected a few maps but it'll be nice to save waypoints on the gps so I know where trails are and such.

I love my Pro-Fit VSM... Originally used it to mount my Yaesu VX-7 handheld, but now it's where I throw my iPod or cell phone on road trips. Definitely keeps things in easy reach, great visibility, and the mounting to the radio bracket keeps it rock solid. Mine is still rockin' after two years.
