I don't think there are many aviation nerds on here, so I know this is probably a long shot, but I was just wondering if anybody is going to the AirVenture airshow in Oshkosh, WI in a couple weeks? I'll be attending, and it would be awesome to meet up with some folks!

I'll be camping at the airport, with about 41,000 other people. More than 500,000 are expected to attend.

Can't wait!

A kid from my church is there helping on one of the ground crews or something. He's with the CAP (Civil Air Patrol) up here and was selected to help this year.

The 2009 vid at 1:03- 1:10, and at 4:20 was crazy! Looks like it'd be fun.. only 5 hours away, but I'm 99.99% sure I won't be able to miss work!

Well, I'm heading out tomorrow! Woohoo!

Erich, that's awesome that the kid got selected to go. I once thought about joining the CAP. Kinda wish I had. :(

Bob, they've got a bunch of WWII stuff out there. This year marks the 75th anniversary of the DC-3/C-47 and the B-17. They will have around 30 DC-3/C-47's at the event, as well as 4 B-17's that have gathered from around the world. There will also be some WWI replicas. Lots of other cool stuff from that era.

Cody, PM me if you decide to head over there. I'll be there from the 29th to the 2nd. You're welcome to crash at my campsite if you like, just bring your own tent. Mine is a bit small. :hillbill: I'm an EAA member, so I can get you a guest ticket for a bit cheaper price.

Well, I'm really looking forward to this. Some of the highlights I'm going to see/do:

-Head to the seaplane base and watch the float planes come in.
-Attend a meeting about electric aircraft. One of the speakers is a guy from Tesla.
-See a Goodyear blimp and try to win a ride on it. :D
-See the only flying Sikorsky S-38.
-Ford Tri-Motor
-DC-7B
-Hydrogen Peroxide powered helicopter
-Erickson Air Crane
-Night airshow and fireworks show
-Catch a movie at Theater in the Woods
-Mass hot air balloon launch
-Cluster balloon launch

Anyways, I'll post up some pictures when I get back. :D

Also, not sure if you guys have seen it on the news, but Jack Roush crashed his jet at the airshow. He has some wounds on his head and is in serious condition. The passenger also had some injuries, but both are expected to be fine. Sounds like the jet stalled while attempting a go-around and hit the runway.

Picture of Roush being helped out of the plane. It's a bit bloody, which is why I just pasted it as a link:

So, I got back a week ago, and here are some pictures of the event. First though, is a video highlighting this years event. Note the night airshow. That was my favorite part of the show, but my camera takes horrible night pictures, so I didn't get any pictures.

A video I found of the night airshow. First aircraft is a jet-powered sail plane. Second aircraft is some sort of old bi-plane...maybe a Waco.

awesome pics dan! the whole weekend i was wishing i was in oshkosh!

mike, no other engine in the world is as sexy as a radial engine. just about the coolest thing EVER.

DHC6twinotter

I love radial engines, and there isn't anything that sounds better.

The Russians had a 42 cylinder (6 rows of 7) 8,763ci diesel radial engine build by Zvezda. It was used in their fast attack ships. There were also a 56 and 112 cylinder versions built, with the 112 cylinder engine consisting of 16 rows of 7 cylinders and 23,931ci. :D

Many of the aircraft at the airshow used the double wasp engine, although I'm not sure if they were the R-2800 or not. Love the engines!

Sean, you are more than welcome to go along next time! Would be awesome!

And lastly, a few random photos:

Hydrogen Peroxide helicopter. I really wanted to see it fly, but I missed the presentation:
http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm233/DHC6twinotter/EAA%20AirVenture%20Airshow%20and%20Fly-In/Airventure251.jpg

It has little rockets on the tips of each blade:
http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm233/DHC6twinotter/EAA%20AirVenture%20Airshow%20and%20Fly-In/Airventure171.jpg

And then there were some crazy contraptions driving around. This contraption has a lady with a viking helmet posing as a wingwalker. The wings on this contraption are connected to a crank on the drive axle and flap up and down. It was powered by an old hit-and-miss engine. The entire thing was fantastic. Pictures aren't the greatest, but worth posting I guess:

http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm233/DHC6twinotter/EAA%20AirVenture%20Airshow%20and%20Fly-In/Airventure176.jpg

Anyways, that's about it. I've come to the conclusion that I need a better camera now. :D

sweet pics... i think ive seen a few of those planes, like the polished DC-3.. and i wouldnt be surprised if a few of those are at our local "Thunder Over the Valley" airshow on the 27th-28th of this month... its much smaller than that show, and mainly focused on military jets... its very impressive to see an F-18 do a completely vertical stopped air stand... thats a lot of control of a lot of power. Blue Angels are usually a big attraction at our show too.
