Hey guys I am new to UltimateYota but I have been a member of YotaTech for about 2 years now and just got fed up with all their BS....Anyway, I bought my 02 4runner with about 150,000 miles on it and I have about 175,000 on it now so I think it is time to replace the timing belt and water pump. I don't know if the previous owner changed the belt and pump at 90,000 miles like you are supposed to so I figure now is as good a time as any...I was doing some research and it is pretty expensive to have someone do it for you (Like $600-$700) but I am more of a do it myself kind of guy. So my question is does anyone have a write-up on how to replace the timing belt and water pump for a 3rd generation 4runner?

I have some mechanical experience but I am not a gear head by any means...yet, so I just need some guidance on what to do. Thanks!

Welcome!

The timing belt isn't exactly a cake walk, but if you take your time, it's not too bad. One thing that is highly suggested is an impact gun to get the crankshaft pulley off.

Anyways, as for a write-up: http://yotarepair.com/5VZ-FEtimingbelt.html

Also, for real photos: http://www.toy4x4.net/timing_belt/index.htm

Good luck!

I just did it about 90% (dont ask) and it was near impossible to do without the SST that pushes the tensioner. I got it for 50 bucks shipped from a place called hands on tools.

Also, it would be a wise idea to mark everything possible where it lines up, made life so much easier. Finally, take your dang time!
