If you've not heard about Bill, read this (http://jalopnik.com/5497042/how-a-500-craigslist-car-beat-400k-rally-racers) or check out this quick search (http://www.google.com/search?q=+bill+caswell&rls=com.microsoft:en-us:IE-SearchBox&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&sourceid=ie7&rlz=1I7GGLT_en). The short story is he took a $500 Craigslist BMW, swapped in an engine he had, put it all together in his mom's basement and finished the Mexico Round of the World Rally Championship where other professional teams hadn't. This guy is epic (I don't like using that word) - he lost his job and decided to take a year off to race. He's raced Pikes Peak, almost got into the X-Games (http://jalopnik.com/5574458/help-send-the-500-craigslist-rally-car-to-espns-x-games) and now has a Miller Welder sponsorship all with a beater '91 BMW.

Now I just heard a rumor floating that there might be a Score Sportsman Truck entry in his future . . .

Wow...I've never heard about this guy, but that is just awesome! Makes me want to put together an old Celica All-Trac or something.

I'll volunteer to be on the pit crew or in a chase truck. :D

Milton's is almost SCORE ready... they just need some suspension tuning. Steve said the rear bucks a bit over big bumps..

on topic: DAMN! i knew my little e30 was awesome, but that is just crazy... that guy is nuts, in the best way possible...

Good on him, but lets be honest. He was no where near getting into the X Games.

see, the x games used to be cool. now its all about the advertisers and the money, not about the games.

this guy was beating professional racers with highly sponsored teams with his 500 dollar beater BMW. so much of racing now days is about money, when it used to be about driver skill and a good team behind the driver building an awesome car.

the most impressive thing, he ended up 3rd in his class, with a time faster than that of 2 professional WRC teams with $400,000 cars.. including tires and his time his car probably cost him less than $2,500... Its incredible

I don't mean to be a party pooper but this story has been embellished to outrageous proportions.

he never raced in a WRC event
He never raced against a $400,000 WRC car.
He finished 3rd, in his class, out of 4...etc.

Jalopnik isn't known for their fact checking (Gallardo story anyone)

no he didnt race against the WRC cars.. He raced in Rally America (some south of the border company with the same name as stateside sanctioning body) alongside the WRC cars, and his time was faster than 2 of them. And he finished 3rd in his class, out of 4 that finished... im pretty sure there were a lot more that started. Whats amazing about it is that he bought a car for $500, did all the work himself for race prep, then drove it down and entered it in a rally. He was his own pit crew, doing all his own repairs, and he was competitive! Thats why this is awesome

Exactly, it was the spirit behind the effort that I'm impressed with
(though having a writer for Jalopnick as a friend doing PR and getting the word out didn't hurt the effort)

I agree with that. Have you heard what vehicle he wants to race in the sportsman series?
As mentioned before, having a Celica all-trac would be sick.

Wow, that looks interesting. Keith, where are you finding these updates? Does he have a build-up thread somewhere?

that is sick! i wonder what hes using for a power plant now.. in the rally car he was using the s14 (e30 m3 motor).. but i dont think it has enough power to drive that kind of tire with any speed..

from his Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#!/profile.php?id=653681730)page

here's the latest:

The steering rack broke. Bill changed it in the mountains. He smashed his finger hammering the rack on with a rock. He is tired, cold and bleeding. He checked into a hotel 45 minutes ago. Bill has had the adventure of a lifetime. I am very proud of him

Ripped steering rack off car. Swapped a new one in the middle of nowhere. We are cold and tired and barely going to make the next Checkpoint. We are done.
