View Full Version : Goodbye Goldmember...a new beginning

Marc P

After 9 fun years...my 95 4runner know as Goldmember is gone....on its way to a new life in Prescott AZ.

I traded for a mildly built 98 4runner. There were many reasons, but the main one was I have not been wheeling much, and when I do I have family with me.

Damn, I was hoping you'd sell it for money so I could figure out how much I could get for mine!

Nobody is buying anything right now....Pirate and all the forums have tons of nice rides for sale. I had a few offers, but too low for me to get into anything I would be happy with.

A lot of people I wheel with have 3rd gen 4runners and I have always liked them. If I had the knowledge I have now, I probably never would have bought a 2nd gen. I think I made a pretty fair trade, and the other party was very happy too.

I had a chance too look through the reciepts and records he gave me. He put some money into it....

It has e-locker/4.30 gear ratio, Sonoran Steel 1.2 lift with 5125 Bilstiens and all the other goodies the lift comes with, Budbuilt skid/belly pan, TJM front bumper, Smittybuilt winch, Hella Ralley lights, a drawer system in the back, 265/65/16 MTR's.

I want to add a small body lift, rear bumper, and bigger tires in the near future. I also need to read up on the suspension it has so i can figure out how to make it work good for me.

Seanz0rz
09-30-2010, 10:03 PM
the suspension should be good for you. you might need to go up one click on the front struts (i can do that for you if you like, ive done mine twice, plus another set) to get more lift with the front bumper and winch.

the rear, depends on what you do to it. the stock LC coils will work great until you overload them, then they sag a bit. they are excellent offroad but are a bit soft. airbags or heavier duty springs are your options there.

otherwise, wheel it and see where you want to improve.

jeez.. only 265/65r16s? i thought they looked kinda small... >.< its a nice truck though, looks like you made out very well in the trade

They are small....they are in good shape so hopefully I can sell them to offset the cost of new tires.

The 15's wont work for me..thanks though

Rig runs good, and got a clean bill of health from my lead tech.

Started the mods today...installed my CB in place of the ashtray. I need to order a mount, coax, and antenna as my old setup went with my rig....any recommendations for a mount? I was going to use the same firestik mount I had on my old rig. I guess I should have kept it.

The PO had installed a hood mount antenna, but I hate those so I removed it today.

Wilson lil wil mag mount on the roof. IMO they out perform a fiberglass whip. They are small, light and on the roof where they work good, have a proper ground plane and are out of the way. I have my coax run down the inside of the rear hatch to the tail light. From there it enters the cab and I run it under the carpet on the passenger side all the way up to the dash.

They can be had from all over the place. I got mine at a local truck stop.

look at my CB antenna mount thread here: http://www.ultimateyota.com/index.php?option=com_smf&Itemid=26&topic=5097.0

i am going to start making them SOON. within the month.

OR, wait until you get a rear bumper and mount it there.

i used the firestik mount, and it sucked. thats why i built the one i had. i still have my old prototype one somewhere, i could hand that one off to you until you get a proper rear bumper.

just let me know.

That looks really nice Marc! Let me know when you plan the shake down run, I'd like to go. I'm off this weekend but out of town, my next weekend off is halloween weekend. I'm off alternating weekends, so hopefully I can make it.

The real question is: Can I get all of that service work done too? Pretend my truck is your wifes, and get me a good price ;)

Did my first "mod" to the new rig today...installed a 1 inch 4crawler body lift. Took me about 4 hours to install start to finish. Had a little trouble getting the body separated from the frame and with the steering extension..

Holy wheel well clearance...need some 285's ASAP

what troy said, its stronger on the stock mounts. i thought about moving mine up an inch when i got my BL, but its just not worth all that extra work. get some rubber trim and you will be good marc.

troy, i believe it had budbuilts.

Marc P
10-26-2010, 09:14 PM
Yes..I have Budbuilt skids. The bumper position does not bother me a bit. I think my nex mod will be 285's...these little tires are driving me crazy and I havent even gone wheeling yet

Well, your truck is already mod'd so there's not much need. Planning on touching it up some? Fresh coat of paint?

Very cool purchase.

4x4mike
05-15-2012, 09:26 PM
Yes nice purchase. Did you end up putting air bags on the rear of your 3rd gen? I think there was some talk when you were getting the trailer. It will be interesting to see if the bumper weighs down the rear much. My stock springs are a little flat and I run 15 psi in my bags all the time. With weight in the rear or a trailer it's a bit stiffer than I like.

Marc P
05-15-2012, 09:32 PM
Not yet, I am still thinking about it...I really need them when I pull the pop-up

4x4mike
05-15-2012, 09:41 PM
I see you have the 1.2 lift. Didn't the older versions of that lift come with 2 spring choices? One being the 8 wrap? You have the bilstiens so I guess it's not the early years with the trekmasters. If you're interested in getting stiffer or taller coils and need a buyer for the coils you have now, let me know, I'm in the market. If you get new coils the air bags can be put in at the same time. Two birds, one wrench.

Marc P

Got the bumper painted and installed...very nicely built and fits good. I am not sure if I will remove my BL or not. The gap doesnt bother me much at this point.

Just do like I did and paint the lower rear quarter behind the bumper black. It'll look a lot better.

What kind of plastic is it? I know I've dyed white plastic using a light boiling water, some RIT dye and vinegar and salt. Tried that? Might see if a wrecker has a piece you can try it out on. Usually it works best w/ nylon plastics, but I've had decent success with other light colored plastics too.

http://www.ritdye.com/diy-projects/odds-ends/dyed-buttons

http://harleytechtalk.org/htt/index.php?topic=22856.0

Krylon also makes this stuff called "Fusion" a couple customers I know used: http://www.krylon.com/products/fusion_for_plastic/

Seanz0rz
05-27-2012, 06:31 AM
the kyrlon fusion stuff works well.

otherwise, you can try vinyl dye. it should have no problem changing the color of the plastic.

fyi, the plastic is probably a -PE derivative, which means most stuff wont stick to it. ive tried rustoleum plastic primer on HDPE and it worked and flexed great. the top coat needs to be flexible as well.
