damn that sounds fun! iv been wanting to run some of those for a long time.. whats the time frame you would be thinking for this? cuz obviously i need to get my engine/tranny swapped first.. but if its far enough away that i can get that taken care of I am DEFINITELY interested :-D

glad to hear some people would like this. i think it would be fun. steve knows of a forum that has already done a similar run, but i dont know the details. i drew out a rough path on google earth for reference.

The "best offroad truck" is sick of John Bull?
hmm...

Anyway.
Here's an excerpt from SCTC..
"The Whole Bernardino was the club's successful attempt to run every major trail in the San Bernardino Mountain Range from the Cleghorn to Old Woman Springs near Johnson Valley! It was a wonderful time! The pictures are from Cleghorn, Pilot Rock, 2N17X, Willow Creek, Dishpan Springs, Gold Mountain, John Bull, White Mountain, Jacoby Canyon, Pontiac Slice, Rattlesnake Canyon with the bit of 3N16 and 2N02 tossed in!"

sorry scuba, i think im done bashing my truck on the rocks all the time. doesnt mean i wouldnt do the trail (ive never done it east to west, same with gold mountain or dishpan). id be more inclined to do jb i have new gears or new tires by then.

hmm jacoby canyon....that actualy figures in great! its gonna make for a super long day though haha.

troyboy162
10-18-2010, 01:41 PM
oh and that brings up a good discussion. including rattlesnake will make for a better run but dump participants out in lucerne valley. going the rest of the way to yucca valley will be just dirt roads and a drive through pioneer town.

the other thing is the lytle creek divide road. id have to check and make sure its not gated. its super easy id bet but it should have nice veiws.

the other tricky part is fitting these all in withing three days and concluding each day at a camp site without backtracking

plan for two major trails a day. for example, Cleghorn, Pilot Rock, 2n17x and willow creek can be completed in one, VERY LONG day. that leaves us right around the beginning of dishpan, im not aware of any camps there, but maybe we can find a primitive site or the like.

from there we can run dishpan and white mountain, and john bull for another very long day. we could then camp at holcomb valley camp, thats a bit of a back track though. then the last day do gold mountain, jacoby canyon and out to yucca valley.

i vote skip white mountain and jacoby canyon. white mountain is boring, jacoby is awesome but a bit out of the way (since its basically north of gold mountain, requiring a return trip on the highway or going back up gold mountain.

ill post more tonight.

Troy, We've done Cleg, Pilot (2n17X), and Dishpan all in one day. If we didn't stop for 1/2 hour at the end of cleg as well as about 1.5 hours to help Jamie change a CV we would have been done with Dishpan by 6. And that spits you out into crab flats I believe. We could make it over to the big campsite we had during TTORA BB09 near holcomb valley. The next morning we would have to back track maybe 1 mile to get to JB west, exit that and head to gold mountain. After gold we could head to Tip Top and camp. Then do Pontiac, and rattlesnake the next day...

Moral of the story, its not hard to do Cleg, pilot and dishpan in one day. Provided we don't have any long hold ups.

troyboy162
10-18-2010, 02:48 PM
i hear ya but tacking on 1.5 hours for lytle divide may be out and a large turn out of new drivers/break downs may make dishpan a all day affair. looks really like theres no way around long days, but shifting trails should balence it better. also two groups will help with getting everyone through. just a hour between groups will make it all flow better. thinking of a faster group behind so everyone bunches up at the end of the days runs

Crinale
10-18-2010, 03:37 PM
sounds good to me... also sounds like i want to bring at least 2 spare cv's :-P. iv gotten pretty fast at changing them though, with the Aisin hubs i dont have to remove those damn cone washers anymore!

http://www.expeditionportal.com/overlandroutes/index.php?title=Cajon_Pass_to_Johnson_Valley

ExPo has some information. that particular trail has holcomb creek on it. that trail will be closed until at least memorial day, so we probably wont hit it this time around.

ive been up on alot of the roads near lytle creek, i wasnt impressed. nice views but otherwise just graded dirt roads, much like 3n16. im not sure if these are the same roads you are referring to though, its been about 4 years since i was up there.

if we could make the end of dishpan by day 1, that would be huge. from there john bull and gold mountain, though not sure where we could camp from there besides round valley or juniper springs group camps.

i would prefer campgrounds. alexus isnt super keen on the bucket idea...

troyboy162
10-18-2010, 07:22 PM
yeah the two ends of the run (lytle and punching out to yucca valley) are really up for debate. lytle like you said is just nice veiws as far as i have read and skipping rattlesnake to head to yucca is just purly to truly clear the range east to west and adds nothing more really. although i thought it would make the return trip for everone south better.

Scuba
10-18-2010, 09:48 PM
Eh. I'd rather hit mottino at the end. But thats just me.

troyboy162
10-18-2010, 11:48 PM
i know i would too but how many others are gonna want to? and how many of those will you tow and tug up through there after 2.5 long days of wheeling? unless its me/you/bill/scott id save it for another day.

camp grounds are the only option i see as well. we squatted a site last time without a true permitt and i dont see that as an option with a larger group. sean brings a good point too that lady folk dont want to dig a hole and i assume this will be a family oriented trip.

Seanz0rz
10-19-2010, 12:06 AM
if we have less than 8 vehicles, group camps are a great idea i think. tent peg is immediately at the end of dishpan for night 1, and juniper springs near the end of day 2.

if we limit to 8 vehicles, then that is definitely a possibility. im not sure how strict they are on their enforcement of the 8 vehicle rule, but i dont really want to find out either. max is 40 people, that shouldnt be a problem, as most of us will be 2 to a vehicle.

troyboy162
10-19-2010, 03:33 AM
hmmm its all in the trails per day...but everyone has such a different pace. this will be hard to judge until we see what and who is coming.

steve i dont dought that a fast moving, self spotting, team could punch all the way into big bear before sun down, but id guess cleg and pilot would be a full day for most. tacking on lytle divide would certainly make it a full day.

sean you had a good plan maped out let me throw out a list as well to get ideas going.

day 1:
lytle divide
cleg
pilot
arrowhead
camp in http://www.northshorecampground.com/

day 2
dishpan
jb backwards
camp at tanglewood

day 3
jacoby
heartbreak
pontiac
rattlesnake

i kinda dig that plan since it makes day 2 the "hard day" and that makes it easy for smaller open/open rigs to come along and just skip those and meet us at camp

Seanz0rz
10-19-2010, 09:22 AM
wow i didnt know we were driving all the way up to reno!

troy, did you mean http://www.reserveamerica.com/campgroundDetails.do?contractCode=NRSO&parkId=70604

that would be the "north shore" camp ground.

i like that plan. trails most likely to break stuff on the 2nd day, and only two of them so if we get stuck on the trail fixing cv's, it wont be so bad. the only question, are we under 8 vehicles for tanglewood?

so requirements for this run should be per trail huh?

JB 33" sliders rear locker?
dish 32" sliders rear locker?
pontiac/heartbreak 31" R locker or 33" open/open?

everything else is stock friendly that i can think of with bypasses for the bigger trucks

my blackout dates: march 11-april 7 (finals then our wedding), may 25-june 10 (finals) other than that, im good for just about every day.

my vote is the weekend april 29-may 2.

some_odd_girl

I'm pretty sure April 29-May 2 will be finals for me. I'll have to check that...

troyboy162
10-26-2010, 04:23 PM
whats a guess on snow melt date? also several of the trails are closed in winter...

april 29th will be pushing it for me as far as when im due to leave again.

mid april?

Seanz0rz
10-26-2010, 05:13 PM
Yeah maybe April 15.

For snow melting, I'm going with mid April for trails to be clear and mid may for the majority of it to be gone and for it to not be freezing cold at night. Let me check some data later and I'll update. It all depends on the snow we get this winter and what kind of spring we have.

ive confirmed mostly what i said above. its going to be fricken cold in april and potentially snow on the upper trails like JB. should be fun...

some_odd_girl

bad news.... i cant find any civilized camping open that early in the season...

both nights of camping will be near towns. you think a bathroom run into town will be enough for the ladies?

Seanz0rz
01-12-2011, 06:16 PM
ohhh, probably not... mine has expressed concern about using the bathroom midday as well. hopefully they will give in. i do have an awfully nice shelter, seat, bags, chemicals, etc.

seems like everything on the mountain opens memorial day at the end of may. i thought a couple of the campgrounds were "year round" crab flats maybe? what about the group camps?

troyboy162
01-28-2011, 04:38 AM
jim!! good to see you on the internet outside of horrific youtube videos!! so glad your ok. there is alot of interest on this one but being so far out i think we only have 3-4 rigs for sure.

dates arnt set in stone but i think they are working for the majority right now. anyone have objection to setting these dates in stone?

camping still isnt worked out. not sure if we will have to resort to primitive camping and seeking out the right permits.

anybody who wants to. i have some google earth stuff for anyone who needs them. the camping arrangments have never been sorted though. it seems its too early in the season for the toilet camp sites to be open.

someone needs to plan this thing, guess it will have to be me. dont expect much planning...

looks like most people have major issues with the dates.

what other dates work for you guys? putting it more toward summer opens up more campground opportunities, and it wont be sooooo cold at night. lets get some suggestions for dates and then i might start a new thread with a poll to figure out who can make it when.

how does the first weekend in may sound? ill have to look when some of the campsites open, but i think this is the date for alot of them. some i know open up on memorial day weekend, a weekend you do not want to be in the mountains...

troy, can you please email me the information you have collected. you should have my email, otherwise PM me.

lets get this going, im excited to get back on the trails!

looks like the group camp sites are closed well into may.

the regular sites open up april 28 or so, making a first weekend of may trip sound mighty good.

how does april 29, 30, and may 1 sound? or may 6-8? post up! ill probably restart this thread so i have the capability to edit the first post, etc.

i vote this whole event gets pushed back to summer time.

hopefully troy will be back, people will be more willing to come for the better weather in the mountains, and hopefully everyone will get their vehicles in working condition.

i dont have the time or energy to go planning this trip right now.

if someone else wants to take over, be my guest. i can send you info on it.

nice! JD you have sliders now right? John bull and dishpan are some of the harder trails outside the hammers. We used to do both 33" tires and open/open but I think they are both a bit harder now.

i will be bypassing JB. I've seen enough $$$ slip through my fingers on that trail.

Jaydee914
02-09-2013, 02:02 AM
I do have sliders and a set of lightweight skids. I'm up for a challenge but we'll see about those 2.

troyboy162
02-09-2013, 05:23 AM
research them a bit. Dishpan has one obstical thats note worthy called ball buster or "the waterfall" I havnt been up it in a while but the last pictures I saw made it look like the easy line had a new bolder in the way.
this is ball buster and the easy line is on the right in the first pic
http://www.myjeeprocks.com/forums/showthread.php/22545-Dishpan-Action

JB has three about three real obsticals but is over all rougher

Wow, that section of trail has gotten ugly. I did it in an unlocked Xtra Cab with 32" tires years ago, but it looked nothing like that. Seems to happen to all of the trails I like--when they're challenging for "stockers with lockers," it apparently also starts to become entertaining for the buggies. Then they tear it up.

Jaydee914
02-13-2013, 10:28 PM
We'll need to find a place for Sean, Kevin and me to retrieve our rigs after the challenging day, or for us to meet up with you afterwards!

troyboy162
02-14-2013, 01:07 AM
so far no one else is going that would be interested in those trails. In that case we could pavement pound to Big bear and mess around on more of the easier trails there for fun. I could kill a day on the green/blue trails there no problem.

How about the weekend before or after?

Sean - yes my truck is ready for Mojave... but with stock armor, open diffs, and 31s there is NO possible way I could do Dishpan let alone JB... I loved Dishpan, and really want to do it again, but my truck won't be ready for that for a while... I need gears, lockers, and tires first. only about 3 grand worth of stuff XD unless I get lucky on some 5.29s on ttora or similar

Jaydee914
05-01-2013, 07:59 AM
I don't think I'm going to be able to make the Friday portion of this trip, as I probably can't take another full day off from work. I'll have to meet up with you guys on the trail Friday evening or at the first campsite (unless you want to make day 1 a night run?).

troyboy162
05-01-2013, 09:36 AM
That very well might be possible. This one was such a long range planning one that I don't know who's still interested. Sean are you going to make it?

Seanz0rz
05-01-2013, 09:57 AM
I plan on making it! I think Dan is planning to ride with me. Lexi doesn't like rocks!

I am pretty much game for anything, though I am unsure about JB.

troyboy162
05-01-2013, 10:55 AM
What time do you think you could make it to the trail head JD? Cleghorn and pilot rock can be quike or long depending on the turn offs we do.

Seanz0rz
05-01-2013, 11:35 AM
i believe all of the good cleghorn stuff is closed off now. At least the ranger about 4 years ago said that was going to happen very soon. I haven't been since.

anyone else coming?!

Jaydee914
05-01-2013, 02:24 PM
I could probably be out there by about 5. Or I could meet you guys somewhere on the trail.
I've always wanted to do Pilot Rock - was that on the schedule for Friday as well?
Whatever happens though, I'm psyched for!

Crinale
05-01-2013, 02:54 PM
Wish I could join you all :(

troyboy162
05-02-2013, 12:27 AM
Jd that sounds doable for a meet up at pilot rock at 530ish. The trail head is right at the dam on silverwood lake. Sean are you still able to have friday off? We could adjust fire and push things back a bit.

Cleghorn still has some of its side trails closed although people have re-opened them to the point that you would never know they were closed. It still has some challenging terrain open, but I think the views are now the best part of it.

Seanz0rz
05-02-2013, 10:06 AM
So far I have Friday off. I don't foresee starting a job in the next 2 weeks, fortunately or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it.

just give me a place and time, and we'll be there!

Seanz0rz
05-02-2013, 06:20 PM
So what is the latest list of trails and camp sites?

troyboy162
05-08-2013, 05:32 AM
Haven't had time to work on the planing for a bit but meeting JD at pilot rock sounds good. With just guys our camp ground needs have changed so i might put some yellow post sites in. They are limited to two trucks so I'll look for ones close together.

Seanz0rz
05-12-2013, 01:12 PM
Troy, do you have a valid fire permit? I didn't do one yet this year.

edit, never mind I found it on ExPo. http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/threads/77015-2012-USFS-California-Campfire-Permit-link-amp-PDF?p=1281735#post1281735

good through the end of 2013 FYI.

troyboy162
05-12-2013, 04:49 PM
just have to print one out. I will try to get things finalized this week. Most likley changing to primitive camping.

Seanz0rz
05-12-2013, 05:09 PM
sounds good. Let me know about the camping. I will bring firewood if we are at a camp spot. if not, I will bring extra propane for my little stove!

Jaydee914
05-12-2013, 09:53 PM
I'll bring some firewood too...
And beer.

How many trucks do we have?

Jaydee914
05-13-2013, 07:20 PM
Don't hold me to this, but there's a chance that I could be out there earlier than I previously thought - possibly by 3ish. Are you guys planning to still do Cleghorn first, or are you just heading straight to Pilot Rock?
Would you be able to meet up earlier, if I can make it (I won't know till Friday morning - it all depends on how much I get done at work this week), or would you just prefer to set a solid 5:30 meet time at Pilot?

Seanz0rz
05-13-2013, 07:23 PM
Troy, I'd be down for a cleghorn run on the way to meet JD at pilot rock, or if he could make cleghorn. There are some nice views, and it will get us to that all important "whole" bernardino status...

I'll be ready to roll by 12pm Friday, and will just be hanging out until I need to leave either to meet at cleghorn or at pilot rock.

troyboy162
05-13-2013, 07:42 PM
Everything sounds good! Sean let shoot for cleg at 1245 and shift to 3pm if JD can make it. Both cleg and Pilot can be run slow or fast depending on the routes so I think it should work out good either way to bring us into camp at a decent hour. I'll try to iron out some camp sites. Nothing has showers that I know of so I would prefer to primitive camp but yellow post sites may not work out. I'll try to figure it out tonight or tomorrow.

Seanz0rz
05-13-2013, 07:44 PM
Ok. Are we doing the willow springs trail (links pilot rock with dishpan)? I think there maybe places along there to camp. I will look also, since I have nothing better to do.

Do you have GPS tracks for that area as well? It can be a bit confusing getting from pinnacles staging area to the start of dishpan.

troyboy162
05-13-2013, 08:10 PM
yes I had figured in entering the arrowhead trails at the pinnicals and I think that means willow springs. I have been looking at the camping situation...Friday night is going to be a long night so I think just crashing somewhere not at a campground/yellow post would be good. That means no camp fire but we should be pretty beat anyhow. I'll google earth for a open area as well possibly down by the creek??.

Saturday night there is a couple yellow post sites on the north west side of big bear lake that looks good. If the weather is good(no wind) I would like to push for tip top mountain instead. The more I think about the yellow post sites the more I dont think we will have issue with three vehicals. The sites are large and I think the rule is more to keep from bomb fire keggars happening. What ranger would care if three non-teenagers are enjoying the campfire?

Jaydee914
