So, I've decided to quit being a fatass and went ahead and joined WeightWatchers Online Program for men. My mom had huge success with the weightwatchers program and recently my wife joined and has been doing awesome with it. They both go to the meetings, but the meetings times do not work very well with my work schedule, so I'm just going to try the online program.
I was going to start at the 1st of the year, so I didn't have to worry about the holiday dinners, but I decided to start now and at least I'll hold myself in check the rest of the time and not really worry about it for the holiday dinners. Also, I'm hoping that keeping myself in check during meals and everything will still allow me to enjoy my beer. :drink:
Anyone else planning on starting a diet or workout program in the upcoming year? Maybe we can help each other keep accountability? Go ahead and post up your thoughts/goals etc... and we can keep this thread going and hopefully get a little healthier this next year. Even if you plan to start at the first of the year, go ahead and post up. I could always keep this first post updated with our starting/goal/current weights. So the goal is to reach the target weight and check in at least once per month for 1 year afterwords.
I'm just starting now, so that I don't feel as bad when I pig out on prime rib roast and mashed potatoes at christmas dinner. :)

Remember...
So the goal is not only to reach the target weight, but to maintain that weight and check in at least once per month for 1 year afterwords.

Basically at this point, it's all going to be with portion control and eating smart using the Weightwatchers online program (http://weightwatchers.com) and trying to get some exercise in here and there. With the kids and being self employed in construction, it is really hard to find time/$$/energy to do an exercise program. I do plan on doing more active stuff, but I don't really have a program or anything that I plan to follow yet. Although, the more active stuff I do during the week, the more "points" I get and therefore more beer I can drink on the weekends haha.
My weigh in day/ beginning of tracking my weeks for the program are on Mondays, so I plan to post my weight and how I did every monday or sunday night.

Based on the lack of responses, you must be the only fatass here! :flipoff:
Actually, I'm trying to lose about 5-10 pounds to get rid of a gut that I've had ever since 6th grade. I've been eating healthier and with the end of summer, I'm trying to get out and mountain bike regularly. Later on, I'll come back and edit this post with my weight.
Edit:
Current = 165 lbs
Goal = 155-160 or loose the gut.

Welllll I'd actually like to lose some weight but am having a hard time getting motivated to do so. Part of the problem is getting motivated to go to the gym and part of it is not spending the money to eat healthy. And being busy. I actually think I've lost a bit lately but I don't have a scale so idk.
And I know girls aren't supposed to do this, but it's ok, I actually have a fairly healthy body image ;)

I picked my weeks to start on Mondays, so I had to weigh myself again last night so that I could enter it today. Yesterday I was 204.5, I doubt 2 days on a diet did that, probably more to do with the massive ..... I took... Next week will really tell if this is working at all, although christmas dinner may throw a wrench in that haha, I'm just hopeing to not gain. :)

I wish, but in general, you are going to pay much more to eat healthy food. Whole grain foods and non processed foods are generally more expensive. Fresh fruits and veggies are expensive (even more if you try to eat organic). Same with organic milk and eggs that come from free range, no hormones/antibiotic chickens.... The list goes on and on... It's not too bad if it's just for one or two people, but when you add two more little eating/growing machines, it gets expensive quick!

For anyone reading this, you have the understand that the first rule of losing weight is "NO MORE EXCUSES".
You don't have to shop at Whole Foods to eat healthy. Growing up, we didn't eat free range chickens and organic this and whole grain that, and we were never overweight. We didn't eat Captain Crunch and NEVER had soda in the house, however, and were always active.
What you listed would be appropriate for a bodybuilders lifestyle, but saying you can't walk into a grocery store and come out with food that isn't loaded with sugars and fats is silly.

I didn't mean that as an excuse for losing weight. I agree with you on that. Growing up, I wasn't overweight either, in fact I was always super uber skinny. That came with a change of lifestyle, getting older, and not adjusting my food accordingly. Before having kids and being able to surf almost everyday, I could eat/drink whatever I wanted and be totally fit and trim. With 2 little kids at the house and owning/running/operating my own business, I am no longer able to do that and need to adjust my food intake accordingly
The foods I listed were ones I listed to be healthier, not necessarily losing weight. There is a lot of stuff that is sprayed on/added to foods now that weren't when we were younger too, and lots of that stuff I listed is for the health of my growing/developing kids. I have a little daughter and some of the correlations with the hormones in milk and growing little girls is kind of scary(and believe me, I don't believe half the crap that is put out on the tv). My mom also just got breast cancer this last year and has opened our eyes to a lot of things through her research. Anyways, that is what I meant about it being expensive to eat healthy. Yes, I know that I can still lose weight while eating white bread, but you can't tell me that it is healthier than eating 100% whole wheat bread

I hear you.
You alluded to a good point about age as well. You guys/girls should throw your ages up there.
The bread exaple isn't really a good one because even wheat bread is inexpensive relative to white bread. What most people don't realize is how much sugar is in many wheat breads on the shelf so they thing they are being healthy but are taking in a lot of unneccesary calories.

Yeah, I meant 100% whole wheat, not just regular wheat bread with refined wheat (that and white are pretty much the same price). Sometimes whole wheat isn't on sale and is just too expensive, so we get the regular wheat bread, but I do get the stinkeye from my wife when I do.
Speaking of bread, here's a tip for you guys/gals. April and I now use sandwich thins for our sandwiches. Basically they are thinly sliced bread pieces and most are 100% whole grains. Not only is it pretty much like only having one slice of bread instead of two, they are also slightly smaller in diameter, so you might make a smaller sandwich (or sometimes you gjust end up making a taller sandwich haha). They also have bagel thins which are really good too. Our kids don't have a weight problem, so we buy bulk loaves of 100% wheat bread for them and they go through it like crazy. We keep the unopened ones in the freezer so that they won't go bad.
Dan, they have sandwich thins that are nutty too. I like nutty bread too

Ok, I didn't mean crazy healthy, I just meant I suck at feeding myself. I eat way too many hot pockets and too much mac and cheese, stuff like that... Part of it is I don't feel like making legit meals for JUST me. And I don't eat enough fruits or veggies.
Oh and I'm 24.

Have you all heard of Ezekiel bread? From what I understand, it isn't made from flower at all, but uses grain sprouts or something instead. I ate it last year while I was on the South Beach diet. Used it for french toast and all kind of stuff. It's doesn't taste as good as regular, nutty whole wheat bread, but it's not a bad alternative. Coos-coos is a good alternative to rice and other grains, especially when cooked right.
Anyways, I think I'm going to try the south beach diet again, although not quite as stringent as I did last year. I'll probably throw in some fruit too (which is a no-no on the diet). Probably do some whole grain pasta once a week or so. I'd like to also start jogging/walking/running/falling in a few days. They've got a few nice tracks on base near my work. And if I wait till it's dark, nobody can see my fat jiggle. :hillbill:
Anyways, just my $.02.

im getting married in 3 months, so i would like to be in better shape by then. if there wasnt 3 inches of standing water in the back yard, i would be landscaping and burning alot of calories.

Okay Chris, go ahead and add me up top. I won't be starting until the new year probably, but this will be great motivation to keep me from going overboard during christmas. :hillbill:
I lost quite a bit of wieght this past year, I went from being unemployed to FINALLY working again, and it was HARD work pretty much jogging and picking up 40 pounds over and over and over and over and OVER for 10 hours in a 90-100 degree warehouse every day. I dropped from aroun 280 to about 240 in about 3 months. I felt great, except for the whole feeling like I just got my @$$ whipped all the time, but the weight felt good, I had good energy, etc. Since then I have moved within the company and now have a VERY physically reduced job. I have put back on about 15 or 20 pounds. I'm relatively static where I am now, so I would like to just drop the weight and adjust my eating/lifestyle to keep it down around my goal.

So the goal is to reach the target weight and check in at least once per month for 1 year afterwords.

So, I think I've decided to cut out as much sugars and carbs as possible for the time being, which is basically the south beach diet. I lost 25 pounds using this diet last year, but I've since gained back about 15. :( This time around though, I want to add exercise too. I've been wanting to build up my stamina anyways. I want to be able to hike without being pooped every 5 minutes.
I think lunches MWF would be a salad from Subway (only eat place close to work other than Taco Bell and KFC). Tuesdays and Thursdays my lunch is earlier, so I can grab lunch at the chow hall in the building I work. This is even better than Subway since it is cheaper and I can usually get some grilled chicken or pork chops.
If I eat dinner, I'll probably just whip up something here at home. A lot of times, I'm not even hungry at dinner time, so I'll just snack on nuts or something.
Breakfast is the hardest for me, and I could use some ideas. I get tired of eggs fast, so I can't do eggs every day. Any kind of bread is out since I'm trying to cut carbs (unless I do the Ezekiel bread). I'm debating about cereal. If I do eat cereal, I usually eat either Grape Nuts or Quaker Oat Squares or whatever it's called. But cereal is against my diet rules, so I dunno.
Any ideas for breakfast food?

Chris, is April following any kind of food plan?
slosurfer

Chris, is April following any kind of food plan?
Yeah the weightwatchers is a food plan. It's based on a points system that takes into account the fat, carbohydrates, protein, and dietery fiber in a food to come up with a certain amount of points that a serving of that food is. They come up with an allotment of daily points that you are allowed and then you also get 49 bonus points per week to use whenever. They also have where you can add to your weekly bonus points by working out, walking, running, etc... Basically you can eat whatever you want but try to stay under or at your daily allotment of points. You find out quickly though that you have to eat smart and healthy to not go over on your daily points. There's also an emphasis on eating a well rounded healthy diet. Most raw fruits and vegetables are 0 points.
She goes to a weekly meeting where she weighs in and they have a short meeting. She also hasn't started any exercise program or anything, this has all been just on the diet.
I'm just using their online program since the meeting times don't work well for my schedule. I track everything online (she also does this), but I'm adding the weight in myself.
you can read more here http://weightwatchers.com I'm doing the "online for Men" program

wow, props to your sister  My mom lost probably 50+ lbs and was still losing more when she got diagnosed with breast cancer a year ago. She was probably in the best shape she has been in in 20 years. 2 days ago the scale read "200.2" so that is my new baseline to go from.

Well I did 2 miles on the elliptical, and some arms and abs. It's a start. The scale in the gym said 162, but I'm not sure how right it is.
Sean, I know what you mean. I live in a dorm on campus, but it's still really hard for me to feed myself healthy food. I don't feel like cooking for just me, so I eat a lot of junk. And lunch lots of times end up being something random that I can grab between classes... so I just try to eat less sugar, but it's not easy!

...just went to the gym again. Looks like I'm the only one posting here. :P I weighed myself and wasn't happy... almost left out of frustration that I'm not seeing results but I didn't... I've just got to keep at it and hope eventually it starts making a difference.

you have to burn 3500 more calories in a week then you eat to lose one pound. its a pretty brutal math equation
some_odd_girl

It sure is... and I haven't really started eating extremely healthy yet, so I suppose that's part of my problem... between work and school it's really hard to try and find the time to eat stuff that's good for me.

well i have no idea what i weight today.
every scale we try reads somewhere around 10 pounds less than it should. (based on a doctor's scale). maybe my metrology class is screwing with my head, but that kind of error is unacceptable to me.
regardless, i havent been doing very well with my diet, but i am making an effort to eat less and eat better.

Sean, it's not so much how accurate your scale is to other scales, it's more to show how your're doing. Just make sure to weigh in with the same scale, in the same spot on the floor and about the same time of day, wearing roughly the same thing. (there's a big fluctuation throughout the day). My morning weight and evening weight are much different, so all my weigh ins are now first thing in the morning. My scale may not be accuate to the Doc's, but I can use it to track my progress

we have this one (http://www.amazon.com/Conair-TH209-Thinner%C2%AE-PLASTIC-DIGITAL/dp/B002N5N33Q/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1296526879&sr=8-3) and got it at Bed Bath and Beyond. It's been good and it's a pound off from the one that April weighs in on at her meetings. Even then, we try not to move it at all. Just moving it to a different spot on the floor can make it read different.

I know how that goes... I've got a wife & kid, and it's still hard to cook! Between work & school.. there's either no time, or I'm super tired. We've been eating a lot more pizza & fast food the past couple of weeks. One way to eat semihealthy, and not have to cook, is those cafe steamer meals & other TV dinners. I'm not saying it's the most healthy thing, but certainly better than fast food.. tastes good too.

Yeah, the kids are energy sucking vagrants! I actually was finally slimming down right before we got prego with kiddo #2. Kiddo 2 is now 3 yrs old and still a handful but not nearly like it was when she was smaller and kiddo 1 was smaller. They still will suck the everliving energy out of you, but nothing like when they are infants and toddlers.

FINALLY got a weigh in, went to the doctor and said right at 266, I've got a scale now, and it matches what the doctor said, so consistency shouldn't be an issue. I am currently (just started) doing the slim fast shake thing, I did it a couple years ago, and it worked great. I am doing a little less this time, but I am eating a ton less as well. I only eat two meals a day, dinner with Mrs Rocko before I go to work and then "lunch" at around 1am, but I am replacing my lunch with a slim fast shake, and we'll see how it goes, I will add in a fruit or veggie snack if I feel like the one meal and a shake aren't giving me enough calories for bustin my butt all night. :)

well I managed to escape disaster at the Super Bowl shindigs. I weighed in at work today at 255. That's 11 pounds in just two weeks!! Unfortunately, the COD diet has turned on me, now I just SNACK while I play COD, jellybeans, popcorn, oreo's, you name it. But going to try and control those cravings, and start getting some workout going as well, and we'll see where we can get to. I am aiming for 230 this time around I suppose.

its so true.. i was sick for over a week, havent weighed myself since before i was sick (the 245 i posted was from about 4 days prior). Iv already noticed my pants are fitting a bit better... done about 35 miles on my road bike in the last 4 days. My throat doesnt like me riding in this cold weather, but it still feels great! The other benefit, is I drastically cut back on soda. I only drink one a day now, whereas that was all i drank before.
Now i just need to get some running shoes, and i'll be good for training! and for the next few days while its raining, my mom has a Gazelle that i'll probably make good use of. I'll weigh myself tomorrow morning (if i remember) and see how i'm doing.

For a couple weeks now I've been noticing I had to make my belts one hole smaller but figured it was just my imagination. Then, one day after I went javelina hunting (lots of walking around), I weight myself and was surprised it said 157, down from about 165. I just laughed that off thinking I was just dehydrated.
So I weighed myself again last night and found out I weigh 161! That's definitely a downward trend.

I forgot to do my Monday update. Kind of bummed because it's the first time I've gained since I started this diet, but honestly I think it's mainly carried water weight from this weekend (earlier this week I was 168.5) but I did have a bit of beer and stuff this weekend. Overall for the week, I was still well below my diet's allowed "points" so I'm sure I'll catch up next week.
Also, now that I'm around 170, I'm reevaluating my weight goal again and will probably change it to 165 and reevaluate again at that point.

I didn't want to chime in here as many times as I've read the thread for fear of letting myself down because I am hurt and had gained back the weight I lost during athletics plus a little more. I simply cannot work out to any extent until I get some mri's done so see how much damage has been done to my back.
FWIW I am back down from 245 to 215-217 and trying to keep it off as best possible. Thanks for the inspiration guys, I am still trying to hit 201. (5'8" tall, ex-footballer physique w/ a gut.) All from a dramatic appetite/intake change and trying to walk as best possible while sort-of doing the jog-walk actions, but not the speed or finesse. If it hurts I stop, plain and simple.

Well, I weighed in at 164.6 this morning. :D I think I am now going to switch to "maintain" mode rather than set another goal to lose more. I now fit in all my clothes that I had when I first met my wife 10 years ago and I was in the best shape of my life back then. I'm still not in that kind of shape, since back then I surfed almost everyday and was pretty toned up.
Part of my "maintain" mode is going to include working out and starting surfing again. We will be moving in a few weeks and I will have free access to a pretty decent gym room, so that will help out a ton. We'll also have more access to babysitters which will help for getting out to surf as well.
I never would have thought I would say this, but this weightwatcher's program really works. I'm going to keep doing it as I now have it set up to help me maintain my weight. Hopefully after a few months, I'll be comfortable enough and be set in my ways enough to do it on my own. Until then I'll keep using it and its database to keep me where I'm at.

Yesh! I took it out a month or so ago and got scared going down hill - the trails were really rutted from the rains. But I finally got a helmet! So I won't die! (hopefully)

At least you guys are getting out there and doing something, I haven't done anything the past few weeks other than work. :( Once we get this move behind us, I should be able to start doing more activities. I'll have access to a pretty sweet home gym (multi-station weight machine, elliptical machine, and a treadmill), so I'm excited about that.
Weighed in at 161.6 this morning. I've still been losing a little bit since I switched the diet to keep me where I'm at, which is fine, I just don't want to get below 160.

Tri-Athlon = SUCCESS! I finished in a somewhat weak 2:09:12, but the good news is i finished! I also have a good baseline to improve upon, and a good idea of what i am up against for future training
2 days ago was the first time i had been in a pool for lap swim in years, and i did the tri distance in ~19 minutes. This morning i did it in ~14 :D although, the work required to finish the swim in that time period made the bike and run ridiculously difficult.
My bike average was about 3mph slower than i wanted (i wanted an average of 18+mph, i got almost exactly 15), which accounted for about 12 minutes of the time over my goal of 1:50:00, and a massive stomach cramp at the beginning of the run easily accounts for the other 7..
All in all i think i did pretty well, friends of mine did AWESOME!
- My long time friend and training buddy Collin finished in 1:37:48, finishing second in our age group (20-29)
- His little brother finished the short course (same swim and run, but subtract 5 miles on the bike) in 1:26:09, WINNING his age group (12-15)
- and my friend Jimmy won the 20-29 male short course at around 1:17 (dont have an exact time for him).
[just for reference, the best overall time for the long course, (1/4mi swim, 17.9mi bike, 3.1mi run) was 1:15! About the time it took me to do the bike alone!]

Me, I'm happy to see I have a belly button and shoelaces again!!
Since I got hurt I never really went with my being an official entry since things could have gone either way. Well, as of tonight I'm back at what I was at the end of my coursework 10 months ago, having gone down to 215-220 after being up as high as 250-"ish". I'm back at 215-218. The next goal is below or at 210 once my doctor let's me know I am fully cleared to ride and workout rather than this modified crap. This is good b/c of after getting sick in Mexico there was a risk of my body "rebounding", the last 6 weeks has sucked for diet and exercise, but I stuck it out.
We'll leave it as I "lost" 1/2-3/4lb getting rid of the hippie-do, this was the first stage, boss loved it!

Well, even if I haven't lost anything.... I can tell I'm in MUCH better shape. I'm in AZ right now, doing lots of hiking at 6000+ feet, and even though it's knocked the breath out of me climbing up some hills, it would have been even worse just a month ago. WIN! :D

^Hypoxic threshold exercises will help up there too, you'll notice you're "inset" to exhaustion lessen, and then when you return down lower you'll have a temporary advantage..old athletics training tool. Push out as much air as possible and breathe in more, repeat 5 intervals, etc-etc..just watch your heart rate and exhaustion levels, it's easy to dip into low oxygen levels and also conversely cause tachycardic situations (extra beat from your atrium causing oxygen overload, etc). You get into the whole "White out/White-Tunnel" about to pass out bit, so while you sound OK, keep things up, but within measure.

i went hiking on Gaviota Peak on Saturday.. (im still sore from it).. and we didnt see any ticks.. caught a few Horny Toads tho (ok, Evan caught them <.<).. awesome little lizards.. for any of you who know that trail at all, we BOOKED it.. made it to the peak in 1.5 hours, spent about another hour and a half at the top (went 1.5 miles down the ridge before turning around) then made it down from the peak in about 50 mins.. probably planning to do it again soon
weight wise i have pretty much stabilized at between 225 and 230.. i think i have to change my diet if i want to lose more, but im definitely getting more toned, my beer gut is almost gone, and my legs have almost no body fat at all (YAY road biking!)
most of all, Im feeling quite good.. my stamina and cardio is tons better than it was when i joined in on this thread ^_^

That's awesome! I want to do that hike again. I hiked around Wildwood yesterday, got some pretty cool pictures, it was a beautiful day.
I don't know what I weigh right now, but I definitely need to change my diet too. I'm starting by trying to eat less processed stuff (no more Hot Pockets!) but it's not easy trying to make myself healthy foods!
Keep up the good work!

I'm down to my goal of 155-ish, but the second part of my goal was to lose the gut, which I still have. I haven't really been on a diet, per say, just eating healthier by eating oatmeal every morning and cutting out the snacks throughout the day. With the summer months being our off season, I haven't been mountain biking at all. Hopefully when it cools down in about a month I can get back on the bike and finally get rid of the gut.

LOL@Steve. Feeling you there, we ate birria and beans this weekend. FWIW you're posting your weight made me a bit jealous in that I was initially afraid to even bother weighing myself since I cannot even come close to a real workout yet.
That said, after that ^ post I jumped on for giggles and self-loathing. I've only retained 4lbs of the 20lbs I gained back during the 12 months of physical therapy and back pain. I want to be closer to 203 at the most, 195-198's my best ever. Switch to cheerio's or rice crispies for breakfasts and snacks and chicken breast (we get the Costco stuff) you steam/fry in olive oil. It seriously cuts the carbs.
Pics or it didn't happen people's?

well, this summer's been a bust. the only thing i really accomplished in this dept. was quitting soda. Those of you that know me well know i had a ~6 can a day habit. im down to 1 every few days. i dont think i will quit completely, but make it much more of a treat. ive replaced it with home made iced tea, with stivia sweetener.
we also put an above ground pool in this summer. ive lost about 10 pounds between the swimming and the quitting of soda.
Robinhood4x4
08-23-2011, 04:13 PM
I wouldn't call that a bust at all. Quitting soda is always an accomplishment. Now you just need to get down to 1 soda a week, then 1 soda a month.

i went 2 whole weeks without. i dont feel any different (i turned into a real @$$ for about a week after i quit) but life's been a bit stressful recently. beginning to be able to relax again, so hopefully that helps.
its a bust for what i had hoped to accomplish. guess i didnt do too bad though!

Steve,
I'm also a big oatmeal fan. Here's some options should you want to mod your oatmeal:
brown sugar
agave
cinnamon
peanut butter/peanut butter powder
cocoa powder
vanilla protein powder
chia seeds
kashi go lean crunch
grape nuts
wheaties fuel (also great on ice cream)
granola
raisins
craisins
bananas
blueberries
strawberries
Obviously, pick and choose from the list, and go easy on the sweeteners and crunchy cereal toppings!

honey is also awesome...
i really hate oatmeal. it makes me gag. recently ive been making more eggs in the morning. eggs on toast, egg and (a little) cheese burritos, scrambled eggs, eggs and green chili. trying to get more protein especially in the mornings. ive let my "eating better" thing slip lately. when things return to normal around here (and we have a working kitchen again) i should be back in it with little trouble.

Been awhile since I checked in (almost 2 months), I'm now at 168 which is a few pounds over my goal. So, I'm going to have to buckle down again to get back down to 165 and to keep it there during the upcoming holidays.
Considering how this summer has been with parties and bbq's, I'm actually pretty happy that I'm only 3 pounds above goal.

Hit my goal on Aug 20th and surprisingly, I'm still at 155ish. I thought in the last few months that I had gained some back, but I just weighed myself this morning and found out I didn't. I'm still not satisfied though because I still have a gut.
Miki and I are signed up for Pat's Run this Saturday, which is a 4.2 mile run/walk and we're so far from our training regiment goal it's not even funny. We can barely hit 1/4 mile before we have to walk. Oh well, next time. Our new goal for Saturday's run is to run at least half of it, but not all at once.
