we are all thankful that jim made it out with only a couple small scratches do to the roll cage on his bed, withstanding the impact of rolling end over end 3 time

Finally got the sand out of my eyes and ears, lol. Had a great time as always. Special thanks to Mikey for the carne!
I didnt get to crawl much this time but still had lots of fun playing in the sand and chasing by brothers baja bug. I think next year I'm actually going to sign up for some of the organized runs.
The only casualty on my part was burning up my trans on the way home. I think shooting sand hills finally took its toll on the counter shaft bearings. Anyway, now I'm on the hunt for a W56 trans and maybe even a second T-case, who knows. I'll post a couple pick later.

im sure, between that and his bumper.. i guarantee that truck will have a full roll cage when he rebuilds it.
ive now watched this about 5 times, its a very sobering view of how dangerous our sport can actually be.. and it's making me want to put at least a simple roll cage in my 4runner..

That is crazy, I gasped and swore when I watched it... and yeah, that spotter kinda sucked...

spotter was fine. jim took a bad line on a dangerous decent. looks like he held onto the wheel tightly during the roll.

01-20-2011, 11:26 PM
ya, in some cases i jump on the blame the spotter bandwagon, but in this case, Jim didn't listen to the spotter well. If you watch the video, the spotter started pointing "passenger" several feet before Jim actually turned that way.. I'm not necessarily blaming Jim either, but it's hard to blame the spotter when the line he intended was in fact not the line the driver followed. On that note, I couldn't tell you if Jim had actually turned passenger when the spotter told him if he would have made it down ok, but this crash was not the spotter's fault.

Oh... well, I'm still learning what to watch for. And it looked like an all-around dangerous thing to attempt.

Well this sport is inherently dangerous and I think one thing to keep in mind is that we all voluntarily choose this sport time and time again when we go out. It's always easy to blame a spotter, or a bad driver, or this or that. What it really boils down to though is that its your personal decision to go out, with your rig modified the way you have it, and knowing that this is a dangerous sport it is our responsibility to make sure our trucks are safe for use on the type of trails we plan to attempt. Am I saying that everyone should build a full rollcage in a rig before they take it out to the bunny trails? Absolutely not. Just a reminder to keep it safe out there, and to always keep in mind what you and your truck are capable of, and the safety needs for each class of trail. Also don't be afraid to be a jerk, if you don't trust the person spotting for you, don't be afraid to get someone up there whom you do trust. I know down here in the slick and wet spotters are often a must, and I will let just about anyone spot me (due to my rollcage and a lack of concern over body damage) but when it comes to the safety of others in my rig or a serious obstacle, there are only a few people I trust in the really sticky situations.
Jim, sorry about the truck buddy, but am super glad you made it out without any major injuries, I witnessed a similar roll at River Rock a few years back in a non caged pickup, and he ended up chopping off the roof and putting in a cage and driving it as is. Good luck with whatever direction you decide for the truck!

That video is crazy!! I'm very glad Jim made it out of that ok. Why did the passenger door fly open? Good thing there wasn't a passenger in there with him.

Yea, It was definitely not the line I wanted. Russ's line may have worked, if I had taken it earlier. Glad I had him spot instead of ride. I usually do better by squaring up before steep climbs or descents, and I wanted to go left and then right to square up before the notch, and that did not happen. The Jeep before me made then same line and rolled as well. I was trying not to duplicate his stunt, but oh well. The trail-boss ahead of the Jeep two wheeled it as well, but made it somehow.
I learned a few things from this, even after wheeling for decades: Just cause the trail-boss made it, does not mean you can or should try it. If the run is super steep, and the rocks roll downhill when kicked, then take a bypass. Lastly, 'Mall Tires' are not for level 4+ runs. I will go back to IROKS if I can ever afford them again.
Anyway, the rig is in the driveway, and I have jacked the roof back in place, pulled the seats, fenders, radiator, and am ready to cut the old top, and weld on a new one. Gonna buy some DOM tube, and add more metal to the rig. Gonna get a helmet, too. I'm not planning on doing that again, but I will be better prepared, if it does happen. The All Pro roll bar, and BigRocks bumper bar (and the Grace of God) saved my butt this time... Be Safe Guys...

I'm glad to hear that your keeping the truck Jim, its going to be crawling machine when you get it all back together. I was bummed that I didnt get to wheel with you this trip. Instead I spent the whole time chasing a certain little baja bug all over the desert, haha.
Speaking of that bug, here is a video that Isaac put together of his VW blasting around.

My trans pooped out on the drive home, proabably from bombing around the sand dunes all weekend. So I went and got a longer/stronger W56 from the junkyard.
While I was at it, this and another reduction box, somehow mysteriously appeared....
