Hey guys,

So I am plotting out the lift / tires / wheels for my 08 4Runner and the UY Wiki's Holy grail FAQ says

- 2003-2008 4runner SE/LTD owners can only install 17" wheels.

But does not state WHY. Any info for me? I wanted to potentially put some 18" wheels off a Sequoia.

i am pretty sure that 'ONLY 17"' really applies to people wanting to install smaller than 17" wheels, as they would interfere with the brakes.

anything larger should be no problem.

well, at least mechanically...

aesthetically is a completely different story!

that's what i figured... OK cool thanks :)

OK, getting frustrated!

I wanted to upgrade to some oem wheels with better backspacing (like some landcruiser / sequoia / tundra wheels) but all the ones that are 6 lug are older style and don't match my truck well imo, and the newer ones are 5 lug.

So now I'm thinking about sticking with my stock wheels and getting 33's on them with wheel spacers to clear the uca's...

Any suggestions / tips / links to builds that would help? Most builds I have seen either go for bling (no thanks) or are way beyond my aspirations for a small lift and 33's...

thanks in advance!

I like those 6 spoke rims on the sport models. They are probably my favorite 4th gen rims. I vote for just using them, if you can.

x2, I'm a fan of those wheels as well. It'll look sweet with 33's.

Lee

I like the rims too :)

I think I'll do a custom cornfed lift, 2.5" front, 2.5" rear (http://www.cornfedsuspension.com/03094Runner.htm) for $140, I have top out spacers from a friend which I'll stick in the front if I need a bit more lift.

Then I'll get the aftermarket uca's (http://www.allprooffroad.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=267) from all-pro for $640 ( )

That should let me keep my stock rims and fit 285/70/17's without using wheel spacers. I just hope the tires sit nicely.

Time to start packing some money away for those uca's... i'll prob pick up the spacers next week, save for uca's and get those in a couple weeks then save for tires and sell my current ones on craigslist to make up some of the cost.

I'm not sure how much UCA space you're working with, but you might be able to get away with a 0.25 spacer. I bought a set to mount 285's on the stock 3rd gen 5 spokes. It turns out I didn't need them. 4th gen may be another story though...

Lee
03-03-2011, 09:48 AM
ive read conflicting info that it needs .5 or .75 to clear with 285/70/17s :(

I'm just not interested in wheel spacers on my dd.

YotaFun
03-03-2011, 06:06 PM
Lee do you plan on wheeling this?
Cause those UCA's are a lot of bling for moderate wheeling or even just a mall crawler...

Lee
03-07-2011, 09:38 AM
no wheeling at all, no.

Remember, I'm not going for the uca's because I love spending $650, it's that I either get them and keep my rims, or buy new rims (which I can't find a set I like that aren't blinged out) for almost the same or more money, or go with wheel spacers which I don't want to do on my DD.

I can always sell these uca's down the road and get some money back :)

Lee

Bought the spacers on Friday, probably getting the uca's this or next week... tires to follow as soon as I can afford them!

balln Lee! ive wanted to do this on all my trucks, its illegal in RI and even though im a Ri state inspector it dosent keep the cops from puling you over

Lee
03-12-2011, 07:36 AM
front tint is illegal in RI?? wow, scott got away with that for a while!

For my next trick, my all-poo UCA's and cornfed spacers are on their way to me... :D

20005spd
03-12-2011, 09:10 AM
ALL tint is illegal in RI unless its factory tint. they technically allow like 3% more tint than factory by their laws but thats not worth doing.

how big are those spacers going to lift you? so it begins :D

Lee
03-12-2011, 05:29 PM
2.5 front and rear with optional 1/2 inch topout spacers for the front if necessary. :)

O/T: JDM Blue Fronts+Limo Tint the rears, it helps tons!!
The JDM's are on the 94-95 that don't have the brown rear windows. https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/_PFYN1rUn3pQ/TWOPDpCn9QI/AAAAAAAAAz4/GTLOA5D50K8/s720/IMG_0001.JPG

Lee, which spacer size and company did you go with? *For reference, stay away form any spacer that is less than .5", they can fracture and shatter, seen it happen numerous times.

*Any thought given at all beforehand about having your wheels just cut? ie: http://www.stocktonwheel.com/index.php is one of the top in the business out here and they're the one's who helped me get mine in cleaner shape.

Lee
03-13-2011, 03:05 PM
spacers are 2.5" from cornfed, the company I have used 3 times now with good results :)

I am trying not to touch the rims at all, so that i can return to stock if / when necessary without having to explain anything or worry about anything... I'd never heard about cutting rims though till now!

No one local had the tires for me, so i ordered off of tirerack yesterday at noon... they were already just delivered using the cheapest form of shipping!

Pretty impressive.

you must be close to a Tirerack warehouse, but still impressive

Lee

yeah I was thinking that too, I think the warehouse is in western Mass, so that should explain it. Still quite impressed that the slowest form of shipping got it here in 12hrs! :)

Very excited to get all of this installed.

id wait on the spacers for a bit.

i think it's time to go to home depot and buy some pavers. load up the rear a couple of times and it will fall considerably.

Lee
04-11-2011, 02:32 PM
Nah I'm gonna throw some topouts up front instead :)

Obi..
04-11-2011, 06:12 PM
:) Nice! FWIW the rear will sag maybe 3/4" tops from what I've seen. Spacers will level it or give it just a slight rise. Be sure to have Lance pm you the info we discussed on his rig for resetting (z-out reset) the deceleration sensor so you don't end up dipping into the throttle kill zone when stopping or accelerating. *It acts like a rev limiter in action. while yours is a different year, it will be similar in method and just cross reference it to your FSM's specifics.

Obi..

**Nice tanning booth ya got there. ;)

Lee
04-11-2011, 06:56 PM
can you tell me more about the z-out thing?? I have never heard of that?

Obi..
04-11-2011, 08:00 PM
You have to reset the deceleration sensor that provides feedback to the ecu and abs systems. If you lift some of the newer stuff and it's at an angle not within the programmed or allowed amounts it'll begin to show as a fuel cut or un-necessary abs activation. Search Lance's rebuild thread we had been discussing it when I had remembered I had a TSB about it for his year. I tried a search but came up empty and can't share the info I'd publicly uploaded b/c TMSA had filed a complaint to flickr who's locked it out of access as well as locking out that account.
