2002 Camry Passenger Door

My roommate's passenger door decided to stop opening from the outside recently. I figured it'd be a quick fix, so I tore the door apart and found the retaining clip for the door latch had broken, causing the rod to fall out of the handle. I ended up getting the part from toyota (#69293-12030). Now the only problem is I can't figure out how to get the clip on there. Apparently it's supposed to go through the hole in the handle, then have one part of the clip swing around and latch on. No matter what I try, the "swinging part" just doesn't work. It looks to me like there is a spring from the handle that is getting in the way and not allowing the clip to attach.

best i can say is get into the opposite door and see how its connected.. that way maybe you can see a trick your not thinking of.
