That's where I thought the wheel wells would be cut at - do the 1/4s extend in to glue on at the lip? Or would it be possible to cut the wheel well tub where the metal curves down and bridge the gap with a strip of metal?

I will be building a new outer tub to connect/seal everything up .. you'll see :)

I was able to "test fit" the drivers side today .. + I set the front on just to see what it would look like ..

The truck already has the rear lift in it but not the front .. so the front sits quite a bit lower . the nose is down about 5" .. so you have to remember that !!

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/Seans%20hi%20clearance%204Runner/SSPX0770.jpg

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/Seans%20hi%20clearance%204Runner/SSPX0773.jpg

also got some work done on the drivers side piller
pretty rough shape .. previous repair , you can see here the "welds" to fix the holes

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/Seans%20hi%20clearance%204Runner/SSPX0776.jpg

all cut off , and a patch is necessary ..

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/Seans%20hi%20clearance%204Runner/SSPX0777.jpg

the "new/used" pieces all cleaned up .. and prepped

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/Seans%20hi%20clearance%204Runner/SSPX0775.jpg

and fit .. ready to burn some steel

started work on the doors today .. I was skeptical about doing them as the owner requested , as they really didnt look to bad .

started by removing the door panels , handle and lock

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/Seans%20hi%20clearance%204Runner/SSPX0782.jpg

then grinding the edge to remove the skin .. when I started to remove this .. I knew it was a good decision to replace .. you can see the rust in the "pinch" of the door skin ..

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/Seans%20hi%20clearance%204Runner/SSPX0786.jpg

so .. got everything all cleaned up , what a job .. It has been soaked in RUST CHECK since it began life .. the owner was very stringent on getting this done .. and I must say . I'M SOLD !! I have never seen a cleaner 4Runner of this vintage (up here) with such minimal rust problems ...

anyway .. all clean finally and some POR15 to seal everything up ..

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/Seans%20hi%20clearance%204Runner/SSPX0790.jpg

also , got the NEW fiberglass door skins prepped , door handle and lock fitted .. (I will pull these out before paint) and ready to install

*Corey, that Rust Bust (Check) works great. I use that or BoeShield in my panels.

Think of it this way, mine is a S.F. Bay Area vehicle, nowhere near the coast (salt) but I can likely just as easily peek into my quarter trim areas and find exactly that much runt in them purely from moisture/vapors, and mine's only 16years-old!! For that rig to be that clean is a reason in and of itself for me to tell you to start stocking the stuff and using it as an add-on sale or preventative measure. It's almost as good as the wax they used in Japan to spray my frame.

*Side note on top of the comment I just made..

On the bottom of the doors, where the rubber door stop button goes in the panel, 45 degrees up from the bottom corner, just below the 1" inspection hole, check these, lately I've noticed a ton of 1st-gen and 2nd-Gens where they've started to develop a crack that radiates out and up towards the opening in the panel. It's almost always easy to spot on the driver's doors b/c they see the most use, but can also be caught on the passenger side too. Cut a small v-slice into them with a dremel wheel and drill a 1/32" hole in the end of it and tig it up. Only slightly scuff the weld down, actually if you do it good enough the weld will settle into the v cut. This way it's still gonna be a strong fix.

Give me a few to get a pic for ya if you need better info.

slacker
04-01-2011, 06:25 PM
norcal .. it's not a crack .. it's a "factory splice" where the stamped portion of the door meets the added portion ..
if we're talkin' the same spot?? I have done a few doors in my time , and they are ALWAYS filled with seam sealer . never seen a "crack" on any door I have done

Got the drivers side A piller welded up today ..

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/Seans%20hi%20clearance%204Runner/SSPX0792.jpg

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/Seans%20hi%20clearance%204Runner/SSPX0793.jpg

and now the passenger side is almost done ..

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/Seans%20hi%20clearance%204Runner/SSPX0798.jpg

did an "extra" undercoat on the doors .. over the POR15 .. just for added securety against rust .

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/Seans%20hi%20clearance%204Runner/SSPX0794.jpg

also got the door skins epoxied on in time to cure for the weekend .. should be good to go for monday

Nice, that looks a lot easier than I was thinking it was gonna be - is the fill piece for the tub going to be included with the rear 1/4s. If not, it doesn't look hard to fabricate anyway

slacker
04-05-2011, 08:48 PM
no .. way to many variables ..

if it was mine , I would have cut out the inners as well and made a whole new wheel tub + I'd be running 40's . I'm just doin' what the customer wants /can afford

Sweet, I'm having dreams of finally getting a Ford 9" in the back and still having fender coverage - from my research most 9" rears are ~3" wider per side which would match a long travel front nicely ;)

he now has his duals with tripple sticks in , and his SAS is next on his list

he wants to do the 3RZ , but now he's thinkin' of having me install the 5VZFE so maybe an addition to this thread :)
