Why do you think there are so many 4x4 clubs/forums ?
Here in Colorado, theres about 14 that I can name, and thats NOT counting all the Jeep forums lol
Why is there a need for so many ?
most of the ones I know about, are geared towards toyotas, so I have no idea of many ford forums, chevy forums, nissan etc etc

Not everyone likes everyone else, just think of how many forums you've left either willingly or not....

well it goes something like this:

forum 1 is the first to market. most people jump on this one. then it gets too big to effectively manage, moderators get greedy and corrupt, etc. people jump ship and form forum 2.

forum 2 grows and grows. becomes like forum 1. people jump ship over disagreements about the direction of the site, business practices, personal issues between staff. forum 3 starts up.

forum 3 continues as above.

each club will have its own niche. in this case, some will be more devoted to rock bashing, some more to crawling, others to off road racing, and still others to expedition travel. people get pissed off at each other and think they can do it better than the last guy, so several of each type spring up.

as for a need for so many clubs, im not sure there is a NEED, but certainly these will never, or very rarely, combine to form fewer clubs. same with forums. offroad forums are a little difference than most. they tend to form family units. people who you can count on. when those get too big, they break down. just like communism works in a house or village, but not for a country.

ive been in the forum business for well over a decade (wow i feel old now...) and i have run several, been administrators of several, staff of several more, and a user of hundreds of different forums. now im down to between 3-7 (forums are great for school projects!)

What they said, or better yet as the saying goes..

"Variety is the spice of life."

The best part of it all to me is when someone gets the boot and then is passively re-invited in..
